"Alan, get over here!"Sophia shot me an impatient look.I pushed the cake toward the center of the party like a servant. It was Kane's birthday. At the Warren family estate Sophia had put on a lavish party for him, and everyone of standing in the city had come to celebrate.Yet I, her actual husband, could only wait on the two of them like a servant, while Kane watched me with a smug smile."Thank you, Alan. You're a good man."Kane pretended to be polite in front of Sophia, but he had framed me more times than I could count in an effort to force us to divorce. In the bedroom Sophia and I shared, with only the two of us there, Kane broke a bottle over his own head.Sophia would not listen to a word of explanation. She told me to get out of the house.Sophia glared at me."Alan! Are you mute? Didn't you hear Kane thank you?"I forced out a reply. "You're welcome, Kane.""All right. Let's ignore a certain coward."Sophia's father Horne came over with a bottle of champagne from his cella

Sophia looked at me with a cold smile."What, are you going to run again? The way you did when I was taken?"I was done bending. I met Kane's eyes."Move! Go attend to my dear wife!"Kane narrowed his eyes. His voice turned cold. "So our Alan wants to be a real man tonight? Who do you think you are? Sophia loves me!"Kane stood six foot three and was packed with muscle. He looked formidable.Sophia reached out and jabbed a finger into my shoulder."We were over the day you abandoned me! Kane is the hero here! Apologize or get out! Or security will carry you out and throw you in a cell!"Her eyes were nothing but rage. Then a better idea occurred. Instead of marching straight over to seize him, I could draw the assassin near and take him by surprise."Do you think I still care, Sophia?"I shrugged at her, then drove a fist into Kane's stomach. He doubled over like a folding jackknife."Ooh."Kane retched and went down on his knees in pain. All that muscle was no use to him."Oh my God!"

Bob put the pistol away calmly. "We'll know shortly whether your son is the assassin."Sophia stared at Alan. Alan was the hero?!Kane saw the look on her face and hurried to explain, "A gun could be for self-defense. Alan is carrying one too, isn't he? Then why isn't he an assassin?"Sophia thought about it seriously. What Kane said made sense."Mr. President, I'm sure there has been a misunderstanding."The President answered with certainty, "There is no misunderstanding, Sophia. Your husband Alan is the hero who saved my life, and before that he...""Mr. President, there may still be a bomb in this room. We should leave."I cut him off. There was no point in Sophia knowing the truth now. We were finished."A bomb! God, I want out of here!"Bob shouted, "Everyone, get the President out. Mr. Harvey, you and your son are both under investigation."I ignored Sophia and Kane and moved to get the President out. Then heavy gunfire and explosions broke out outside, and a rocket came through

Ding. The doors had barely opened before a grenade rolled in among the four men inside, and none of them had time to react."No!"Boom.The rest came up the stairs and met nothing but my rounds.Every shot burst a skull and splattered brains across the wall; none of them even pulled a trigger.Twelve men between the elevator and the stairs, and not a shot fired back.I did not even need to change magazines. I jumped from the end of the corridor and landed on an air-conditioning unit. From there I caught a drainpipe and slid down it to the ground floor, outside the hall. There were dozens of hostages inside, and I counted more than thirty terrorists.Their commander shouted, "Blow every door open! Find that damned President!""Someone killed our men on the third floor. More than ten of our guys are dead!""What? Damn it! Find him and take his head off!"Outside the window I smiled. More than ten of them left the hall.I did not leave. With the knife in my hand I went in through a ground
