Chapter 1

My younger sister, Wendy Weaver, happily ran her fingers over the necklace around her neck."Mom, I feel so warm wearing my protective amulet. Even my wolf spirit feels so much stronger."Our mom, Alicia Weaver, looked at her lovingly."A protective amulet is the most important thing a werewolf owns. You need to wear it all the time. Moon Goddess will bless you and keep you safe for the rest of your life!"Mom knew perfectly well how important a protective amulet was to a werewolf about to come of age.Yet in her eyes, the fact that I hadn't received mine and would have to face adulthood without Moon Goddess' blessing was apparently insignificant. Our dad, Derrick Weaver, stepped forward and pulled both Wendy and Mom into his arms."Don't be nervous. Your first shift after coming of age is a big deal. Your mom and I will stay by your side the entire time. We won't let you get hurt."Yet just two days ago, Dad had casually told me that there was nothing to be afraid of when I sh

The atmosphere at dinner that evening was still cheerful.Mom put the most tender pieces of roasted meat onto Wendy's plate."Eat a little more. Tomorrow, we're going to have your coming-of-age clothes and accessories custom-made. It'll be a long, tiring day."Wendy smiled and nodded."Mom, I want some of your moonberry sauce.""Sure. I'll get you some in a minute."After saying that, she looked at me."Nancy, why aren't you eating?"I gathered my courage and looked up."Mom, tomorrow is the final round of the selection for the chief healer. I've already signed up."The smile on Mom's face disappeared. She then casually said, "Go ahead. That competition doesn't mean much anyway. It's not like you're going to leave Black Wolf Pack. If you want to participate, we won't stop you.""So you're not going to have my ceremonial dress made?"I already knew the answer, but I still couldn't help asking.Dad glanced at me impatiently. "We can't cancel on a top designer over some point

The next morning, I arrived very early at the competition venue. My mentor, Nina Anderson, was thrilled to see me."Nancy, if you'd agreed to compete sooner, there wouldn't have been any need for this competition at all!"The position of chief healer should've been yours from the start! Now that you've changed your mind, are you willing to come with me to the northern territory?"Every year, the werewolf kingdom held a selection for chief healer. Earning the title was the highest honor a healer could receive, but it also meant accepting a work assignment in the northern territory, the most prosperous region in the werewolf kingdom.Nina had invited me to go there back when I first graduated, but Dad had said that as the eldest daughter, I had to stay in Black Wolf Pack and shoulder the family's responsibilities.Steven had also told me that once we came of age, he would become my mate. That's why I'd turned down Nina's invitation. Now, however, I answered without hesitation, "M

I stood frozen in place. The eastern side of the forest had originally been abandoned land. Since it was close to the border of the northern territory, wild beasts and rogue packs frequently roamed there. The soil was also barren, so almost no one wanted to claim it.I'd been the one to tell Dad, "Give me the land in the east. I'll make it valuable again."For three years, I'd personally led werewolves in clearing and developing areas suitable for living. I'd even turned the abandoned land into a place where herbs could grow.I planted and grew every single blade of grass and plant there.Dad had once told me that this land would be mine to own independently after I came of age.Yet now, he was casually telling me to give it to Wendy.Wendy screamed with excitement. "Really? Does that mean I can have the construction crew build my private estate there? I love that place!"I couldn't help but ask, "What did Wendy prepare for my coming-of-age gift?"The smile disappeared from We

On the day of the coming-of-age ceremony, Black Wolf Pack was covered in decorations, and a festive atmosphere filled every corner. Our house was bustling with activity. My parents were gathered around Wendy while helping her put on her ceremonial dress and accessories.Mom carefully adjusted the moonstone necklace around Wendy's neck and straightened the crescent mark repeatedly. She was afraid that even the slightest misalignment would ruin it."Honey, don't move. This is your protective amulet. It's the most important thing. Everything has to be perfect today so that the Moon Goddess will protect you."Wendy smiled sweetly at her reflection in the mirror. She deliberately tilted her neck to make the moonstones catch some light."Dad, Mom, thank you. I'm so happy."The door opened gently, and Steven walked in.Wendy hurried over and affectionately looped her arm through his."Steven, why are you here so early?"Steven raised a hand and gently ruffled her hair."Today is an

Steven stepped inside and immediately realized I wasn't there.Staring at the empty room, Steven's heart clenched, and a wave of uneasiness surged through him.He hurried to the closet and pulled it open. It was completely empty. All my personal belongings were gone. His gaze landed on the desk. The only thing on it was the gold wolf-bone pendant I'd left behind.Steven reached out and picked it up. He had a terrible feeling about this.He refused to consider the worst outcome. His mind was in a complete mess, and all he wanted was to find me and clear up every misunderstanding between us.He still held on to a sliver of hope. Perhaps I simply didn't want to stay at home and had already gone ahead to the ceremony. With that thought in mind, he tightened his grip around the pendant and hurried toward the Moon Goddess' Altar without wasting another second.By then, pack members had already crowded the altar. Everyone from Black Wolf Pack had gathered to await the coming-of-age bl

After arriving in the northern territory, I quickly established myself through my exceptional healing skills and gentle nature.Everyone here genuinely liked and respected me.After each day's consultations, my coworkers would thoughtfully prepare a warm cup of milk for me. They repeatedly urged me to get plenty of rest and take good care of myself.Sometimes, werewolves of the northern territory would quietly leave freshly picked wildflowers outside my door to express their kindness. Not long after arriving, I fell ill because I wasn't used to the climate. I developed a high fever in the middle of the night.I'd long been accustomed to endure every hardship and every bout of sickness on my own. I didn't tell anyone. I simply took some medicine and drifted into a restless sleep. In my hazy state, I felt someone gently wiping my forehead with a damp towel to cool me down.'Look at me. I'm so feverish that I'm imagining things. How could anyone possibly be taking care of me?'I m

After returning to Black Wolf Pack, Steven completely fell apart. After I'd rejected him completely in the northern territory, he fell ill soon after returning home. Day after day, he remained depressed as if all the life had been drained out of him. When my parents heard that he had returned, they immediately visited him with Wendy. While they were there, they asked about me.Wendy stood next to his bed and looked at his haggard appearance with obvious concern. She couldn't help but complain softly, "It's all Nancy's fault for being so stubborn. She holds a grudge over every little thing and never thinks about anyone else. She had to take things this far."Usually, Mom would have agreed with Wendy and joined her in criticizing me, but this time, she didn't say a word. She quickly walked to Steven's bedside and anxiously asked, "Steven, why didn't Nancy come back with you? You two agreed to hold your marking ceremony after her coming of age ceremony. When is it happening? When is
