Authors post entire stories there chapter by chapter. If I enjoy the style, I'll later buy their compiled ebook or support them on Patreon. It’s a deeper look than a standard sample and introduces you to emerging writers you'd never find otherwise. Libraries remain the most straightforward method, honestly. Lots of readers forget that most library apps—Libby, Hoopla—let you borrow ebooks immediately, which is functionally a full-length sample. You can read a few chapters, decide if it's for you, and return it without any cost.

A trick I've used for years is checking author websites or their official newsletters. Many authors, especially in speculative fiction, offer extended previews or even a free short story set in the same universe to hook readers. It's more direct than wading through retailer pages.
