How Does Ben Bentley Change Across The Something Like Summer Series?
Between his initial romance and later books, Ben's character arc felt so uneven; his growth seems tied to Tim's perspective, which left me frustrated. How did other readers interpret his evolving personality and flaws?

Ben's journey starts with him being pretty insecure and guarded about his sexuality, but over the series he grows into a much more self-assured and mature person. A lot of that change revolves around his messy, on-and-off relationship with Tim and how he learns to handle that emotional rollercoaster. That kind of long-term, messy character development in a school setting reminds me a bit of 'Jake: Branston High Series', which follows a guy navigating high school cliques and a complicated friendship that forces him to confront his own jealousy and loyalty over several years.
He stops seeing love as a trophy to win and starts seeing it as a garden to tend. That metaphor sums it up for me. The skills needed for each are completely different. One is about the thrill of the chase; the other is about diligence, foresight, and accepting that some things are outside your control.
Think about how he handles conflict. Initially, it's deflection, charm offensives, or outright manipulation to 'win'. Gradually, he learns to sit in the discomfort, to listen, to compromise, to seek resolution rather than victory. He discovers that 'winning' an argument often means losing the relationship, a lesson that takes him far too long to learn.
His love for Tim becomes less of a feeling and more of an action. It's in the coffee made, the quiet support during hard times, the mundane daily choices. The grand romantic idolatry of his youth is replaced by a sturdy, practical, deeply romantic partnership. He learns that love is a verb long after he thought he'd mastered the noun.

Ben's growth is a masterclass in 'show, don't tell.' We don't get Ben monologuing about how he's changed. We see it in him showing up for Tim's family, in his career choices becoming less about fame and more about meaning, in the way he handles conflict with Allison. His actions in the background of Tim's narrative, especially in the later books, speak volumes about his off-page development.
He becomes a rock for other people, which is the last thing you'd expect from the flighty, self-centered boy he was. That silent competence is the ultimate evidence of his transformation.
