If we're talking about Hualian pairings beyond the main canon, I find myself drawn most to AUs that preserve the core dynamic but shift the context completely. Modern college AUs where Hua Cheng is the campus bad boy and Xie Lian the slightly oblivious, perpetually unlucky scholarship student just hit different. There's something about translating Xie Lian's celestial patience into surviving student loans and bad roommates that makes his eventual devotion from Hua Cheng feel even more grounded.
Another pairing that lives in my head rent-free is the 'Ghost King Hua Cheng & Mortal Cultivator Xie Lian' trope, but set before their reunion. Fics where Hua Cheng secretly watches over Xie Lian's mortal struggles, intervening just enough to keep him from true disaster but never revealing himself, are a special kind of agony. It's all about the pining and the protection from the shadows. I tend to avoid fics that pair either of them with other characters from the TGCF universe romantically—it just feels off to me, given the canon intensity. The best fics for me are the ones that explore different facets of their established bond, not replace it.
This might be a weird take, but I'm not super into AUs that change their fundamental identities. The best 'pairings' for me are the ones that explore the canon-adjacent possibilities. Like, what if Xie Lian ascended a third time while Hua Cheng was establishing Ghost City? You'd have the banished god and the rising ghost king, existing in a tense, unofficial truce for a while. That power dynamic shift is fascinating.
Or fics set post-canon, where the pairing is simply 'domestic husbands.' After 800 years of angst, seeing them navigate something as simple as cooking dinner or gardening is its own unique flavor. It's less about romantic tension and more about the quiet comfort they've earned. I sometimes seek out fics where the 'pairing' is Xie Lian and Hua Cheng's shared parenthood of someone like Cuocuo or a foundling—it shows a different side of their bond. I skip most high school or coffee shop AUs; they often lose the epic scale that makes their love story what it is.
Role reversal concepts. Fics where Hua Cheng is the fallen god and Xie Lian the devoted ghost fire who never stops believing. The core dynamic flips, but the unwavering loyalty remains. It's a neat exploration of their essences.
Also enjoy 'first meeting' alternate scenarios. What if Hua Cheng approached as Hong Hong-er initially, instead of San Lang? The shy, damaged boy and the worn-out god connecting directly, without the playful mask. The tenderness there is overwhelming. Most other pairings with side characters feel forced to me; the story is so centered on their orbit that adding others romantically rarely works.
Honestly, I think the best pairings aren't about other people, but about different versions of them. My absolute favorite is any fic that explores Hua Cheng's various forms alongside Xie Lian. The dynamic between Xie Lian and San Lang is already rich, but throw in Crimson Rain Sought Flower in his full terrifying glory, or even glimpses of Hong Hong-er, and you get this incredible layered relationship. It's all the same person, but it feels like multiple pairings in one.
I've read a few that delve into Hua Cheng's centuries of watching, crafting statues and building a kingdom for a god who didn't know he existed. That period, as a 'pairing' of devoted follower and unknowing deity, is uniquely tragic and beautiful. Fics that focus on that one-sided devotion before the reunion have a specific ache to them that canon only hints at.

Hi everyone!
This is the author of Rebellious Wife of President Wang.
You might find my book on another platform. However, I guarantee you this is the best and most updated version from another platform^^
I also corrected grammar and slightly changed the story into more enchanting.
A short and sweet story just nice for bedtime. Guaranteed that no brain cells will be used. Might be illogical but....
Sypnopsis:
Luo Jingli was brought up in a single parent family and his mother earns enough only to make ends meet.
He was just searching for a job to feed himself and pay for his mother’s eye surgery, but life is not always as easy as you think, especially for Luo Jingli...
However, he unexpectedly found more than just a job...
Scum top Li Zheng that turned over a new leaf x thin and weak bottom Luo Jingli that fell in love at first sight.
I see this request and my brain immediately goes to post-canon fluff. Something about them getting to be boringly, profoundly happy after everything hits right. Tbh a lot of the fics where they're just being domestic or Xie Lian figuring out how to accept being pampered without guilt are my comfort reads. They don't need big plots.
But if you want specific dynamics, I'm a sucker for any setup where Hua Cheng is the one who gets temporarily weakened or vulnerable, and Xie Lian has to step up as the protector. It flips their usual dynamic in a way that feels really earned. There's one where Hua Cheng loses his memory post-canon and Xie Lian has to patiently re-seduce him without any of the power imbalance of their first go-around—it’s surprisingly tender and funny.
Avoid the high school AUs unless they're really well-done; the epic scale of their devotion gets lost in a locker room.
AO3, hands down. It's basically the default archive for that ship. The tagging system means you can find anything from ten-chapter slow burns to one-shots focused on a specific moment, and because it's so character-tag driven, the Hua Cheng/Xie Lian stuff is incredibly easy to navigate. You don't have to wade through unrelated stories.
I'd say the other big hub is probably Lofter if you can read Chinese. The art and fic there are intense, and the community feels very active. I've seen some translations of Lofter fics pop up on AO3, but there's a whole other world of content that doesn't get translated. It's a different flavor, sometimes more lyrical or poetic in a way that's hard to describe.
For me, the depth on AO3 is unmatched, though. Writers there really explore the centuries of pining, and you get these epic, novel-length fics that feel like they could be canon extensions.
