For a more pulpy, direct hit, Joe R. Lansdale's 'Paradise Sky' is fantastic. It follows Nat Love, a real historical figure, but Lansdale's version is a sharpshooting African American cowboy who becomes an outlaw through sheer necessity after a racist attack. It's violent, funny, and has a huge heart. The antiheroism here is born from injustice.

And you can't ignore 'True Grit'. Mattie Ross is the real antihero, a fourteen-year-old girl so stubborn and single-minded in her quest for vengeance that she bends the law and the hardened marshal Rooster Cogburn to her will. She's an outlaw in spirit, bulldozing through a man's world.

Honestly, a lot of the 'best-selling' lists are dominated by modern crime thrillers, not classic westerns. But 'The Sisters Brothers' by Patrick deWitt was a big seller and prize-winner for a reason. Eli and Charlie Sisters are hired killers, yet the story's dark humor and Eli's internal gentleness make you root for them despite everything. It perfectly captures that blend of brutality and melancholy the best outlaw tales need.

Look at 'Lonesome Dove' for the gold standard. Augustus McCrae isn't some black-hat villain; he's a lazy charmer who drinks and talks too much, but his loyalty and weary wisdom are ironclad. He operates by his own code outside polite society's rules, which for me defines the outlaw heart.

Then there's Larry McMurtry's 'The Last Kind Words Saloon', which plays with the legend of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, stripping away the Hollywood shine for something far more morally murky. It's less about good versus evil and more about flawed men clinging to relevance in a dying world.

Of course, Cormac McCarthy's border trilogy, especially 'The Crossing', features Billy Parham—a kid thrust into a brutal landscape where every choice feels morally compromised. He's not seeking to break the law, but survival in that world makes an outlaw of anyone.
