I'd actually caution against high-concept sci-fi or fantasy right out the gate. The world-building can become a procrastination crutch, where you're designing maps and magic systems instead of writing scenes with conflict. Start with a contemporary, real-world scenario you understand intimately. Get good at making two people in a room feel real. You can always add dragons later, but you can't retrofit believable human emotions onto a cardboard plot.

Go ultra-minimalist. Write a complete story in 100 words or less. Every single word has to pull its weight. It teaches you precision, implication, and the power of a strong opening and closing line. You learn to suggest a whole world with a few details. It's also incredibly low-commitment; you can write five in an afternoon. Overcoming the intimidation of a blank page becomes much easier when the finish line is so close.

Completely disagree with the 'start small' advice here. If you're passionate about a sprawling epic, start there. You'll probably mess it up, but you'll learn more from that glorious, messy, ambitious failure than from perfectly executing a small story you don't care about. The passion will carry you through the hard parts. You can always scale back for your second project, but you'll have firsthand knowledge of the big pitfalls. Go for the big idea; just be prepared to rewrite a lot.

Write a story where the protagonist and antagonist want the same thing, but for completely different reasons, and only one can have it. This creates immediate, deep conflict. It's not just good vs. evil; it's a clash of equally valid (from their perspectives) needs or ideologies. This pushes you beyond one-dimensional villains and into the territory of true dramatic tension, where the reader might be torn about who should win.
