Courtship or rivalry as an arc driver? Absolutely. The process of trying to win over a love interest or surpass a rival forces the character to improve themselves, often in ways they resisted. To impress someone, they become more cultured, kinder, or stronger. To beat a rival, they have to understand them, find their weaknesses, and hone their own skills to a razor’s edge. The other person acts as a mirror and a catalyst for specific, targeted growth.

Secret-keeping is a fantastic engine for internal conflict and eventual explosion. A character hiding a magical ability, a criminal past, their true species, or a prophecy about themselves. The arc lives in the tension of maintaining the lie, the close calls, the ethical dilemmas of deceiving allies, and the ultimate crisis when the truth comes out. The fallout—whether it leads to rejection, acceptance, or a new understanding—forces massive growth and redefinition of all their relationships.

Imposter syndrome in a high-stakes setting. The character feels they don’t belong among elite wizards, star pilots, or master detectives. They fear exposure daily. The arc is two-fold: sometimes they are underqualified and must undertake a brutal, secret crash-course to catch up; other times, they are qualified but must learn to trust their unique, unconventional skills that the rigid system undervalues.

A vow of non-violence in a violent world. A pacifist healer, a monk, a diplomat. The plot throws increasingly severe moral tests at this vow. Do they break it to save a life? Do they hold it and watch others suffer? The arc explores the true cost and strength of their conviction, and whether there are forms of strength and protection that don’t involve violence. It’s a constant, active choice, not a passive state.

Living a double life with escalating stakes. By day, a mild-mannered clerk; by night, a vigilante or a member of a secret society. The strain of maintaining the lie, the near-misses, the toll on their ‘normal’ relationships, and the constant fear of exposure create relentless pressure. The arc often leads to a breaking point where the two lives collide, forcing a choice and a synthesis into a single, integrated identity.

What story topics help new writers build strong characters?

Dialogue where they aren't actually communicating is a goldmine. Write an argument where both characters are logically right but emotionally talking past each other. Or a conversation where one character is using literal language and the other hears only subtext. How they misunderstand, or choose to misunderstand, reveals their fears and priorities more than any heartfelt monologue. It shows what they're listening for, and what they're determined to ignore.
