My mom devours these books. She has them all on her Kindle, lined up in order. She confirmed it's publication order. She'd know; she re-reads them constantly. So consider that a testimony from a super-fan.

Why complicate a good thing? The order they were published is the order the story unfolds. It's a procedural series, not a time-travel epic. You won't miss anything by reading '2nd Chance' after '1st to Die'. The character development builds naturally from one case to the next.

I saw a list on Wikipedia that just orders them by publication year. That's your answer right there. No need to overthink it. The internal chronology of the cases and the characters' lives aligns with the release dates.

Honestly, the most confusing thing about the order is when you're searching online and see 'The 5th Horseman' and then 'The 6th Target'—the switch from 'th' to the number can throw off an alphabetized list. But chronologically, it's smooth sailing.

Sometimes I wonder if the sheer number of books intimidates new readers. But the chronological simplicity is a huge selling point. You're never lost wondering where to start or what comes next. The title tells you everything.

Book 1 Saints and Sinners
She was the light to my dark.
The saint to my sinner. with her innocent eyes and devilish curves.
A Madonna that was meant to be admired but never touched.
Until someone took that innocence from her.
She left.
The darkness in my heart was finally complete.
I avenged her, I killed for her, but she never came back.
Until I saw her again. An angel dancing around a pole for money.
She didn’t know I owned that club. She didn’t know I was watching.
This time I won’t let her escape.
I will make her back into the girl I knew.
Whether she likes it or not.
Book 2 Judge and Jury
I can’t stop watching her.
I’m not even sure I want to.
Taylor Lawson, blonde, beautiful, and totally oblivious to how much dangers she’s in.
She’s also the one juror in my upcoming murder trial that hasn’t been bought.
The one who can put me behind bars for a very long time.
I know I should execute her.
After all that’s what I do.
I am the Judge.
I eliminate threats to The Family.
And Taylor is a threat.
But I don’t want to kill her.
Possessing her, making her love me seems like a much better plan for this particular Juror.

Best of friends dying one by one...maybe one of them is the culprit?
Changing bodies, surviving high school, and brewing drama—staples in the lives of six friends in just another, normal, adolescent-fuming high school in the countryside, but all is shattered when they start dying one by one. A campy rendition of a classic whodunnit, The Midnight Club Murders offers fast-paced storytelling with plot acrobatics, melodramatic conversations, and suspenseful hills to absolutely DIE on, just waiting for you.
I'm a stickler for order, so I made a spreadsheet. Here's the exact list: 1. 1st to Die, 2. 2nd Chance, 3. 3rd Degree, 4. 4th of July, 5. The 5th Horseman, 6. The 6th Target, 7. 7th Heaven, 8. 8th Confession, 9. The 9th Judgment, 10. 10th Anniversary, 11. 11th Hour, 12. 12th of Never, 13. Unlucky 13, 14. 14th Deadly Sin, 15. 15th Affair, 16. 16th Seduction, 17. 17th Suspect, 18. 18th Abduction, 19. 19th Christmas, 20. 20th Victim, 21. 21st Birthday, 22. 22 Seconds, 23. 23rd Midnight.
Patterson's production line means new ones might be out, so check for updates. The Christmas-themed ones like '19th Christmas' are still part of the main timeline, not standalone holiday specials. Every book expects you to know what came before.
The friendship is everything in these books. To see it grow from a tentative alliance into a deeply loyal, ride-or-die group, you need to start at the beginning. A moment in, say, 'The 14th Deadly Sin' where one of them risks everything for another won't hit the same if you haven't seen their entire history.
So, yes, chronological by publication. It's the only way to get the full character-driven payoff that makes the series more than just a string of murder cases.
My book club did the first one and then skipped to the most recent one at the time. It was a fascinating comparison. The differences in pacing, social commentary, and character priorities were stark. It was like checking in on old friends after a decade. I wouldn't recommend that as a standard reading method, but as a one-off experiment, it highlighted how long the series has been running and how the world (and the authors) have changed.
It's interesting how the San Francisco setting becomes a character itself. Reading in order, you see the city change through the years—different neighborhoods, politics, social issues. It's a subtle background detail that adds depth. Jumping around chronologically would jumble that sense of time and place. So for readers who enjoy the setting as much as the murders, order enhances that aspect, too. It's a slow-burn tour of SF across two decades.
