The publishing order and the chronological order are mostly the same for the original series. It goes: 1. 'Love Comes Softly', 2. 'Love’s Enduring Promise', 3. 'Love’s Long Journey', 4. 'Love’s Abiding Joy', 5. 'Love’s Unfolding Dream', 6. 'Love Takes Wing', 7. 'Love Finds a Home', and then 8. 'Love’s Unending Legacy' which is actually a flashback set before book 6.
After that, the timeline expands. 'A Prairie Legacy' series follows Marty’s granddaughter, Virginia, in the early 1900s. 'The Song of Acadia' is a parallel saga about another family that eventually connects through marriage a few generations down the line. The Hallmark movies, funnily enough, mashed plots together and created their own timeline.

For the Davis and Claridge families, read the eight core books in numbered order, but slot 'Love’s Unending Legacy' between books 5 and 6. Then move to the four 'Prairie Legacy' books. 'Song of Acadia' is its own five-book thread that eventually intersects. There’s a chart on Janette Oke’s official site that helps, but it’s still a lot of names to keep straight.

Man, trying to put those books in order is like herding cats. The main eight 'Love Comes Softly' novels are pretty straightforward—they follow Marty and Clark's family from the 1850s onward. The real tangle comes with all the spin-offs and companion series Janette Oke wrote later, like 'A Prairie Legacy' and 'The Song of Acadia'. Those jump around to different generations and even different families.
If you just want the core story, start with 'Love Comes Softly' and read through to 'Love Finds a Home'. That’s the chronological heart of it. But honestly, I read 'Love’s Unending Legacy' first by accident from a used bookstore and wasn't lost at all. The books have a way of filling you in.

The timeline is linear, but the focus shifts between family members. You might spend three books with Missie, then the narrative loops back a little to pick up Belinda's story from her teenage years. So while the overall timeline moves forward, there's occasional slight overlap in the early parts of a new character's book. It's not confusing; it just lets you see the same family events from a different perspective sometimes. For instance, you might have seen Belinda as a child in an earlier book, then get her own book starting from that point and moving forward. It fills in the gaps and deepens the family portrait.
Yep, there's a whole extended universe beyond the original eight books. After 'Love's Unending Legacy', Janette Oke's daughter and co-writer for later books, B.J. Higgs, wrote a four-book 'Return to the Canadian West' series focusing on Marty's granddaughter. They're 'Where Courage Calls', 'Where Trust Lies', 'Where Hope Prevails', and a prequel novella 'Wherever the River Runs'. Then there's the 'When Calls the Heart' TV show, which is technically a very loose adaptation that sparked its own book series by Oke and Higgs—'When Calls the Heart', 'When Comes the Spring', etc. So the reading order gets messy if you want everything chronologically within the story world.
Honestly, I tried the 'Return' series and it didn't click for me the same way. The setting shifts to the early 1900s, and the tone feels more like a standard historical romance, missing some of the gritty, homesteading simplicity that made Marty and Clark's story so grounding. The Heart show books are even further removed, almost a separate entity. For a purist, the core eight are a complete arc; the rest are bonus material for superfans who just can't leave that world.
Hmm, I've only seen the first couple films. Are the later ones worth watching if I loved the books? I'm wary of adaptations going off the rails, but the comments here make them sound like their own thing.
