From a pure trope perspective, it's a goldmine. Grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, redemption, age-gap (which the fandom fiercely debates). Development usually follows a predictable but satisfying arc: hostility, reluctant truce, growing dependency, crisis of conscience, and eventual commitment. The best fics subvert expectations—maybe Ruby's the one who becomes more cynical, or CJ's redemption isn't clean or complete. It's the messy, unresolved endings that stick with me longest.

Straight up, most fics I see lean hard into a redemption arc for CJ, with Ruby as his unlikely moral compass. It's fascinating how writers navigate that dynamic—he's older, deeply entrenched in that violent lifestyle, and she's this sharp, resilient kid with a totally different moral code. A lot of stories start from the canon divergence of him surviving the finale, then build out a slow-burn mentorship that morphs into something more paternal, and sometimes, if the writer is going there, romantic, though that's always controversial.
You get a lot of 'what if' scenarios too, like CJ laying low at the farm and Ruby teaching him how to fix a truck or tend to crops, those quiet moments where his guard drops. The tension often comes from whether he'll relapse into his old ways or if her influence is strong enough to pull him out for good. I've noticed the better-written ones don't shy away from the ugliness—the guilt, the nightmares, the sheer logistical nightmare of a wanted man trying to go straight.
Honestly, the pairing's popularity seems tied to a craving for complex, messy healing narratives more than just straightforward romance. That's what keeps me scrolling through the tags.

Okay, so my absolute favorite thing about this ship in fanworks is the sheer variety of AUs. It's not just post-canon stuff. I've read a modern coffee shop AU where CJ's a burnt-out ex-cop and Ruby's a stubborn barista, a fantasy setting where he's a disgraced knight and she's a village healer, even a space opera version. The core dynamic translates surprisingly well—his world-weariness versus her determined optimism, the clash of experience and idealism.
In more canon-adjacent fics, the development often hinges on small, accumulated moments of trust. A shared meal where they don't talk. Him silently fixing something broken around the farm for her. Ruby learning to shoot not from Clementine, but from him, and the different, more pragmatic style he teaches. It's those subtle shifts that make it feel earned, not a sudden declaration of feelings.
The angst potential is, of course, massive. His past catching up to them is a common plot driver, forcing Ruby to confront the reality of who he was and whether she can accept it. I live for that kind of emotional turmoil in a story, so I'm probably biased, but I think that's why the pairing has such a dedicated niche.

I'm gonna be the dissenting voice here: a lot of the development feels super forced to me. Like, they had maybe two significant interactions in the show, and suddenly every other fic has them in a deep, soul-bonding relationship. I think writers just project a lot onto CJ because he's an interesting blank slate—a morally grey adult with a past—and Ruby's a strong female character, so the combo becomes a canvas for any trope you want: enemies to lovers, redemption, found family.
It's not that I dislike it; I've read some incredible stories that made me believe it. But the trendier it gets, the more it slips into predictable patterns. The bad boy softened by the good girl, the gruff exterior melting because she's 'not like other girls.' I wish more fics explored them as purely platistic allies, two survivors navigating the same broken world from opposite sides. That dynamic has so much untapped potential that gets lost when the default becomes shipping.

Sandra, also known as Ruby, is a young women who meets a popular rock-star. She feels a strong connection with him even though she is engaged. As she progresses with both relationships her world is turned upside down. Both men in her life know the truth about who and what she really is.
Once the truth is revealed she is now forced to pick not only a lover, but a life style. One where she lives amongst the supernatural, and the other as a normal woman who knows the truth but can never involve herself in their affairs.
Which will she choose, and does she really have a choice in the matter as her role in all of this is bigger than she could imagine. Where does her heart belong, with her old life or her new one.
Ruby Colton is unlike any other Omega you’ve ever seen. She’s bold, sassy, and has the smarts to keep her alive. Though she has no single strength or power because of her small wolf, she’s hard working enough to make up for her flaws with her quick wits and bright brilliance.
Lucian Pierce, who is also known as the ‘Dark Devil’, has no place for troublemakers in his pack. But he contradicts this rule of his by himself when he usurps the Blue Sky pack where Ruby is from and gives the sly troublemaker a place in his pack.
Ruby needs Lucian’s protection to live peacefully away from her psychotic adoptive brother who wants her gone. Lucian needs Ruby’s wisdom to keep his pack safe from an uprising of a dangerous new breed of rogues.
Ruby and Lucian being together is a complex juxtaposition of contradictions. But what can they do when the universe wants them to be together and their fates are entwined? They have no choice but to be life companions in that case.

There is also a new threat to Emerald that no one is aware of. The Vampire King has become aware of her existence and wants her as his queen. With her as his queen, he would become the most powerful supernatural in existence. Emerald has once again met her mates but with all her insecurities can they make it work. Emerald just wants to be happy and loved but with everything stacked against her will she ever find her happiness?
A CITY AT WAR… AND I’M THE As it were ONE WHO CAN Conclusion IT I developed up the girl of the Alphas of All. A Ruby Wolf, predetermined to take over checking Alpha werewolves all over the world.
The problem?Ruby wolves can as it were mate with other rubies…and there wasn’t one.Until I lurched upon Shifter City.
Now I’ve got half a dozen ruby shifters on my tail, and as it were a week to choose which one I’ll mate with. The one I select will decide which shifters take control of the city.
I wouldn't say there's a ton of 'best' material for CJ x Ruby, honestly. It's one of those crackships that lives or dies by the one person who's deeply, weirdly committed to it. My memory's a bit hazy, but I think most of the fics from the heyday of 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' communities are just gone—archived on sites that don't exist anymore, lost to purges. The vibe back then was less about slow-burn romance and more about power-couple energy, you know? Two people who understand the ugly mechanics of their world deciding to run it together.
If I were looking now, I'd probably search by the ship name 'CJRuby' on AO3 and filter by date. Anything recent is likely a passion project from someone with a very specific vision. The older stuff, if you can find it, had this raw, chaotic charm. It was less polished, more focused on the 'what if' of them joining forces against the Ballas or the LCPD. Not exactly literary masterpieces, but fun in a nostalgic, early-2000s forum-fic way.
Searching for those CJ and Ruby slow burns is such a specific itch, isn't it? You're looking for that particular kind of ache where every glance and half-finished sentence carries so much weight. My immediate recommendation is Archive of Our Own, which is absolutely stacked with tags you can filter by. Use the 'CJ x Ruby' relationship tag, then add 'Slow Burn' and 'Angst' as additional filters. That combination usually surfaces the really emotionally dense ones.
Don't just sort by kudos right away—some of the best, most intricate emotional builds are from quieter writers who update sporadically. I once found an absolute masterpiece that updated maybe twice a year, but each chapter was a devastatingly beautiful 8k words of pining and missed connections. The comment section became a support group. Wattpad has a different vibe, more immediate and conversational in the prose sometimes, which can work for a raw, present-tense emotional style. Just be prepared to sift through more abandoned works. Honestly, my favorite find lately was a crossover fic on a smaller forum, blending their dynamic into the universe of 'The Last of Us', which shouldn't have worked but created this unbearably tense, survival-focused slow burn that had me holding my breath.
I'm pretty sure there isn't a central hub just for that specific crossover, which is a bit of a bummer. You kinda have to play detective across a few spots.
AO3 is your most reliable bet for any niche pairing because of its tagging system. I'd search both 'cj x ruby' and the full series names, maybe 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend' and 'xxx'—wait, which Ruby are we talking about? Ruby from 'Max and Ruby'? Ruby Rose from RWBY? That changes everything. Assuming it's the cartoon bunny, you might find some truly wild stuff buried under other tags.
Tumblr still has a lot of micro-fandoms and dedicated shippers who post drabbles or headcanons directly, but it's a mess to search. Sometimes you get lucky by finding a writer's personal blog who's obsessed with both shows. I feel like this crossover would thrive more on niche forums or even DeviantArt from like 2010, honestly.
Honestly, the exclusivity is going to come from individual authors who love both shows, not a platform. Your best move is to find a good CJ-centric fic on AO3 and check that author's bookmarks or gifts—they might have written the crossover as a gift for someone else.
