Honestly, after twenty years of teaching, my list has gotten shorter and more personal. I teach the books I'm still passionate about arguing over, the ones where I discover new things every time I re-read them. That enthusiasm is contagious.
If I'm not excited to spend two weeks talking about a book, my students won't be either. So the 'best' books, for my classroom, are the ones that still surprise me, that still have unanswered questions. That often leads me to teach slightly offbeat choices or pair a classic with a very modern response to it.
There's an unspoken pressure to include 'the hits' because students and parents expect it. Everyone feels they should read '1984' or 'To Kill a Mockingbird.' So sometimes, the 'best' list is partially a list of cultural touchstones that educated people are assumed to know.
Balancing that with the desire to introduce lesser-known masterpieces is the real challenge. You might keep 'The Catcher in the Rye' on the list but pair it with a less canonical coming-of-age story from a different cultural perspective. It's about honoring tradition while critically examining it, not just presenting a static pantheon.
The back catalogue of available lesson plans and teaching guides is a practical godsend. If a book has a wealth of high-quality resources on sites like Teachers Pay Teachers, or if the publisher provides a robust teaching guide, it lowers the prep-time barrier significantly.
When you're designing a new course from scratch, a book with a proven track record of teachable moments, common essay questions, and clear thematic breakdowns can be more appealing than a personal favorite that would require you to build every resource from the ground up. Time is a non-renewable resource for educators.

Student x Teacher | Touch her and die | Steamy | Forbidden | Brother's best friend | Age Gap | Enemies to lovers | Badass FMC
He hates her.
She hates him.
For a year already, Mr. Adkins has been cruel to Norali. Her teacher keeps failing her, keeps making comments to her and keeps her late in class. She can't seem to understand why he has such an aversion to her, but she has been equally as mean back.
He is mean, strict and has every woman swooning for him. Except for Norali. The loathing in his eyes, the way his hands turn into fists and his jaw clenches every time he sets eyes on her is enough for her to see right through his good looks. Most of the time.
But he is the only one teaching the subject. There's no escaping him.
And that's exactly how Jace likes it. Norali is his. His to hate, his to desire... His to own. He is in every way a control freak but only wants to have complete control of one person... His student who doesn't listen.
He hates her.
A sexy teacherXstudent book which will have you on the edge of your seat! Fun, forbidden, light-hearted and full of sexual tension.
PAIN AND PLEASURE: The BDSM SERIES

Will
No one knows that the professor who commands the entire class is the same woman I control completely. The same classroom where she teaches, becomes the place where I punish her after everyone’s gone.
Iva

“Professor, you know I don’t repeat myself. Open your legs now, or I’ll put you over my lap and spank you. Is that what you want, your students discovering that their strict professor is a submissive?”
Fuck! Why do his warnings always turn me on instead of pissing me off?
This time, I splay my legs, trying not to provoke him further. I quickly glance around. Thankfully, everyone is too busy working on their test to notice anything. My breath catches as his hand slips between my thighs, under the desk.

She was never supposed to want him.
He was never supposed to touch her.

But love is far more dangerous than desire.

One Night. No names. No rules.
Still raw from an eight-year relationship that ended in betrayal, Aria gives in to a dominant stranger to take her apart in a hotel room, hard, rough, and unforgettable.
She gives him her body, her sounds, her shame… and walks away believing it’s over.
It isn’t.
Because the man who f***d her senseless the night before is her married, untouchable, and very much her strict professor.
They swear to erase what happened. To keep their distance. To be professional.
But lust doesn’t disappear just because it’s forbidden.
Assigned as his teaching assistant, Aria finds herself trapped between her future and her hunger.
Every stolen glance feels like a sin.
Every closed door is a risk.
Every touch could cost her scholarship and his entire career.
As the affair deepens into obsession, Aria must decide how much of herself she’s willing to lose for a man who can never fully be hers... while Jason risks destroying the carefully crafted life he built for the one woman who makes him forget all the rules.
Because this isn’t love.
It’s control.
It’s craving.
It’s a secret that wants to be exposed.
And once you taste something this dark... walking away is the hardest part.
Sloane Mercer has made it her mission to test every limit Professor Dalton Avery sets. Sharp-tongued, fearless, and irresistibly defiant. She turns his lectures into a battlefield of wit and willpower.
Dalton prides himself on control. Of his classroom, of his reputation, and especially of his desires. But when Sloane pushes one time too many, the tension between them finally ignites.
What begins as a battle for dominance becomes something far more dangerous. An illicit affair burning with passion, power, and the threat of exposure. The closer Dalton gets to losing himself to her, the more he realizes he never had control at all.
He fucked her so deep she forgot everything–her name, her job, the fact that he was her student and the fact that Melvin was somewhere in this city looking for her with seven years of rage in his chest but none of it mattered when Elroy had her like this.
Elroy Vans is twenty three and rich. He does not ask, he takes, bends her over, pulls her hair, fucks her until she is sobbing, cumming, scratching his back bloody and begging for more.
She is his professor who soaks through her panties grading his papers
Now she cannot think straight or sleep or stop crawling back to his bed like she has no sense left in her body.
Melvin is close and angry but she is too busy cumming to care.
How do you choose between the man destroying you and the one who fucks you like he wants to save you even if it's forbidden?
Wait, are we talking about which books are considered the best, or which ones actually are the best? Because my favorite book of all time never made it to any class syllabus. Guess it wasn't 'important' enough, whatever that means. The whole system feels kinda arbitrary from the outside.
Lol, my definition is way simpler: if I'm still thinking about it in the shower a week later, it's a contender. If I'm trying to convince my mom to read it, it's a winner.
You know what's underrated on these lists? Pure, sublime storytelling craft. The kind where the plot mechanics are so perfect you don't even notice them, the characters step off the page, and the world feels lived-in. That's a rare genius too, but because it serves the story so seamlessly, it can be taken for granted by critics looking for overt 'artistic merit.' I've read 'literary' novels that were beautifully written but boring, and genre novels with storytelling so masterful it took my breath away. Craft deserves its flowers.
Honestly, sometimes it feels arbitrary, like a game of telephone where a few influential voices set a trend and everyone else nods along. A novel gets championed by a big-name critic in 'The New York Review of Books' or wins a major prize like the Booker or the Nobel, and that anointment cements its status. Then it gets taught in universities, which creates generations of readers who accept it as canonical. It's not always about intrinsic quality; it's about entering a self-perpetuating cycle of prestige. That's not to say these books aren't great, but the process isn't a pure meritocracy.
