Okay, I see a lot of consensus for 'The Burning', and that's correct. Published in 2010, it predates the other Kerrigan books. What's great is that it works perfectly as a standalone thriller, but it also plants seeds for an amazing long-term character arc. Maeve's resilience in the face of doubt, both external and internal, is inspiring. The murder plot is suitably twisted and engaging. But the real magic is in the squad room dynamics—the alliances, the rivalries, the dark humor. Casey captures the unique culture of a police unit brilliantly. Starting here gives you the full, rich context for everything that follows.

It's 'The Burning'. Casey has a real gift for making police work feel visceral and immediate. You're in the room with Maeve as she pores over evidence, fights for her theories, and deals with institutional sexism. The killer's pattern is horrifying and creates a real race-against-time feel. Yet, the book never loses sight of its characters' inner lives. Maeve's determination is rooted in a deep-seated sense of justice that feels authentic. The supporting cast is sketched with precision, from allies to obstacles. It's a compelling, gritty start that promises a long and rewarding series journey.

Alright, I'm just lurking here because I've seen this author's name everywhere but haven't read any. All this talk about 'The Burning' and a detective named Maeve is actually piquing my interest. Sounds like my kind of thing—character-driven procedurals. Maybe I'll grab a sample chapter and see if it clicks. Derwent sounds like a piece of work. Anyone know if the audiobooks are any good? Might go that route.

This book is the first one, and it will be a trilogy. This book is a part of the Carnival Contest. It contains themes that might be disturbing to some readers.
“Are you being nice because of the pup?” I asked. He breathed out.
“I’m sorry how I acted before, no words can justify what I did. I just want to be there for my pup,” he said.
“What about me?” I asked, looking down at the food.
“I am not promising you anything Maeve, let’s just live peacefully while taking care of the thing that joins us together, I promise to be your friend, probably a shoulder for you to lie on,” he said and immediately he said that I burst out in loud laughter.
After her family and pack died the night before her 18th birthday, Maeve is thrown into a world filled with confusion, anxiety, a world filled with guilt. Her mate rejecting the bond and getting pregnant for him. Maeve's life is an absolute mess but she will do anything to get her mate back and make him accept the bond.
What Maeve didn’t know is her life was just about to become more confusing, a world full of betrayals, unexpecting attacks, full of mysteries, will Maeve survive or will she go down just like her parents?
Jane Adair was one of the rising investigators in her generation leading this murder case of a strange event reported where young girls are being raped and killed after going missing for a week, when suddenly something strange happened to her. She suddenly dreamed of events that will happen that lead her to discover her own murder case.
Will she be able to find who killed her? Or a guilty passed events will keep on happening?
I quit and dipped. City threw a parade.
Only Jenna Blake—my oh-so-gifted junior who claimed she could "see through killers' eyes"—lost it.
At her celebration banquet, she went full drama queen:
"I owe everything to Kate Mercer. Please, bring her back!"
I laughed. Cold. Not happening.
Last time around, I was the hotshot detective. But every clue I found? She dropped it first like she read my mind.
People started saying I was washed.
So I went all in—three months, no sleep, cracked a massive trafficking ring. Led the raid myself.
She beat me there. Again. Place was cleaned out.
Boom. She's the city's golden girl.
I'm the clown with no game.
Pressure got ugly. My head snapped. I died chasing the last scumbag.
Then—bam. I woke up. Same day. Raid morning. Round two.
Nine, with a tenth hopefully on the way soon! The wait between books is agony, but it's always worth it. Casey's plots are so tightly constructed. She plays fair with clues, but the twists still surprise me. I also appreciate that the series tackles contemporary issues—misogyny in the workplace, institutional failure, media scrutiny of police—without ever feeling like a lecture. It's woven into the fabric of the stories because it's part of Maeve's reality as a woman in the Met. It feels organic and adds to the tension and stakes.
I'd say you can get away with it. The central investigation is always front and center and wrapped up neatly. The ongoing stuff is more like rewarding bonus content for loyal readers. If you don't mind missing some inside jokes or not fully understanding every historical reference between characters, jump in anywhere.
Her taste in cases changes, or rather, what she brings to them does. Initially, she might be assigned to anything. Later, you get the sense that certain types of cases—those involving vulnerable women, complex familial crimes—are drawn to her or she to them, because she's developed a reputation for understanding them. She becomes a specialist by experience, not by assignment. Colleagues might bring her in on a case because 'Maeve's good with this stuff.' That shift from a generalist to a sought-after expert based on her accumulated wisdom is a huge marker of her development within the force.
What's interesting is how the crimes themselves reflect Maeve's evolving perspective. Early cases, while gruesome, are more detached professionally. Later, the violence feels like it's creeping closer to her own life.
That narrative tightening—the world getting smaller and more dangerous—is a structural choice you only feel in order. It builds a fantastic sense of dread and investment. You're not just solving a mystery; you're walking a path that gets narrower and more treacherous with her.
The library app I use had them out of order, which was infuriating! I had to manually search. 'The Close' is listed as #10. It's worth the hunt to read them in sequence, as the character arcs are the true backbone of the series.
