I tried to get into these because I heard great things about Dani as a female detective, but I found the first book a bit too focused on Tom's domestic life. Does Dani get more POV chapters as the series goes on? Maybe I should skip ahead.

She's a fantastic character—sharp, determined, and gets some great moments—but the series is firmly Tom's. The reading order is just the Tom Reynolds order.

I appreciate how Spain doesn't rely on gimmicky cliffhangers between books. Each mystery is satisfyingly concluded. The connection to the next book is simply, 'Life goes on for these people.' They have a new case to deal with. Because of that, the pressure to read in order is lower than in a series with a big serialized plot.
However, the emotional payoff is greater if you do. A throwaway line in book five about something that happened in book two hits differently if you've read it. The relationships feel lived-in. So, while you can read them standalone, you should read them in order for the richest experience.

Wait, I thought 'The Darkest Place' was a standalone? No? See, this is why it's confusing. Let's stick to the books that are explicitly marketed as standalones and not part of the Inspector Reynolds series. That gives us the four books everyone else is listing: starting with 2021's 'The Perfect Lie'. It's much less of a headache to just go by the official marketing and the author's own website categorization.

The most satisfying way I found was to read the Reynolds series straight through, then the standalones. It let me fully invest in the detective's world without interruption. The standalones are so different in tone and structure that switching back and forth, as per publication order, gave me whiplash.
So my recommended 'complete list' order is: all six (so far) Reynolds books in sequence, then 'The Confession', 'Dirty Little Secrets', 'The Perfect Lie', 'The Boy Who Fell', and finally 'The Sixth Day' as a chaser. This groups like with like and lets you appreciate each mode on its own terms. The standalones are all so strong that reading them together is like a festival of twists.

I don't get the fuss. Just read the description on the back. If it sounds good, read it. If you like the writing, you'll find the others. Strict order is for textbooks, not entertainment.

I'd actually recommend against starting with her very first published novel if you're new to slower-burn procedurals. 'With Our Blessing' is great, but it's her debut, and some of the pacing reflects that. A friend started there and found it a bit too methodical, nearly giving up on her altogether.
I pushed 'The Darkest Place' (the fourth Reynolds book) on them instead, and they were hooked. The case was more immediately gripping, and her character writing was more assured. Sometimes an author's third or fourth book is a stronger ambassador for their talent than their first. Food for thought.
