Just finished rereading it last week, so the cast is fresh. Professor Andrew Martin is obviously the center, this alien sent to Earth impersonating a mathematician to suppress a discovery. But for me, the key characters are the humans he's meant to erase: his host's wife, Isobel, and son, Gulliver. The book works because of how Isobel's grief and Gulliver's teenage angst chip away at the narrator's mission. The alien's observations of their flawed, painful, beautiful lives are what change him.

There's also Newton the dog, who gets a surprising amount of page time. The narrator connects with the dog's simple honesty first, which is a clever narrative choice. The real antagonist isn't a person but the alien's own home civilization, the Vonnadorians, though they're more of a distant threat. It's really a story about a family of three broken people and a dog, and the stranger who gets stuck pretending to be one of them until he isn't pretending anymore. That last scene with Gulliver gets me every time.

The alien, his wife, the son, the dog. The wife is patient and kind, which confuses the alien. The son is angry and sad. The dog is the only one he trusts at first. Their ordinary problems seem stupid to him, then important. He starts to like them. He has to choose between his mission and them. That's the whole thing.

Gotta push back on the 'family' angle a bit. Sure, Isobel and Gulliver are important, but the key character is the narrator himself. The whole book is his voice, his transformation from a contemptuous observer to someone who sees the value in human messiness. Without his specific, analytical yet increasingly emotional perspective, the others wouldn't matter as much. He's the lens.

Isobel's role is crucial as the emotional anchor—her unwavering, puzzled love for this imposter husband is what ultimately gets under his skin. Gulliver represents the pain and potential he's supposed to destroy. But the alien's own people, the ones who gave the order, are a key character in absentia; their cold logic is the foil for everything he learns. It's less an ensemble and more a solo journey where the other people are the landscape he travels through.

Who are the main characters in the humans book series?

The 'Humans' book series revolves around a fascinating cast of characters, but the heart of the story lies with Professor Andrew Martin and his family. Andrew, a brilliant mathematician, is the first human to solve the Riemann hypothesis, but his life takes a wild turn when he’s replaced by an alien android sent to Earth to study humanity. His wife, Isobel, is a strong, compassionate woman who struggles to reconcile the changes in her husband while trying to protect their son, Gulliver. Gulliver, a teenager grappling with identity and purpose, becomes a key figure in understanding what it means to be human. The android, who takes on Andrew’s appearance, is a central character too, as it navigates human emotions, relationships, and morality. The series explores their interactions, conflicts, and growth, blending science fiction with deeply human themes. What makes these characters so compelling is how they mirror our own struggles—love, loss, identity, and the search for meaning. The android’s journey, in particular, is a poignant exploration of humanity from an outsider’s perspective. It’s not just about the plot twists or the sci-fi elements; it’s about how these characters make us reflect on our own lives. The series is a masterclass in character development, and each character’s arc feels authentic and relatable.

Who are the main characters in How to Be Human?

Oh, 'How to Be Human' is such a quirky and heartwarming read! The story revolves around three main characters who couldn’t be more different but end up forming this unlikely bond. First, there’s Frank, a socially awkward, middle-aged man who’s basically a walking encyclopedia but struggles with basic human interactions. Then we have Tara, a rebellious teen runaway with a sharp tongue and a hidden soft side. The third is FC, a vampire who’s trying to understand humanity after centuries of isolation. What makes this trio so compelling is how their flaws and strengths play off each other. Frank’s awkwardness clashes with Tara’s impulsiveness, while FC’s ancient wisdom (and occasional bloodlust) adds this surreal layer to their dynamic. The book’s charm lies in how these characters grow together, learning about love, friendship, and what it truly means to be human. It’s one of those stories that stays with you long after the last page.
