How Can A Light Novel Story Reader Sync Progress Across Devices?

Loving a new isekai web novel, but it's a pain switching between my phone and tablet mid-chapter. How do you all keep your place seamless? My bookmarks get lost.

This might sound excessive, but I run a Calibre content server on a home computer. I add my EPUBs to Calibre, then access them through the web browser on any device. Since it's serving the same file from a central location, it often remembers my last position. It's not perfect, and it requires some technical setup and leaving a computer on. But for someone with a large library of sideloaded light novels, it's the closest I've gotten to a personal, syncable cloud library.

For purely web-based reading, some sites use cookies to save your place. Clearing your browser history can be disastrous. Honestly, the lack of a universal standard is the biggest hurdle. We need something like 'Readwise' but for fiction reading progress across any source.

Interesting thread. I sync my progress by just telling my partner what chapter I'm on. She doesn't care about light novels, but now she's an unwilling backup storage system. 'Hey honey, I'm on chapter 78 of 'The Eminence in Shadow,' okay?' She just sighs. Human-powered sync. Low latency, high emotional cost.

BookWalker's app is surprisingly decent for this. Buy a digital light novel from them, and your furthest read page updates whether you're on the app or the web reader. It's not perfect—sometimes it's a page behind—but it's reliable enough. For anything outside their store, you're out of luck. I wish more apps used an open standard like Adobe's ACS4, but that's mostly for DRM-protected PDFs.

A low-tech method that works: take a screenshot of the last page you read and leave it in your phone's photos. It's silly, but when you open your photos on another device, there's your reminder. Ultimately, syncing progress is a feature provided by the platform or app developer, not something you can easily force if it's not built in.

Which light novel reader app syncs reading progress across devices?

I'm curious about the data privacy aspect. When you use Kindle or Google Play Books sync, your reading progress and habits are being recorded on their servers. That's valuable data. Some people might not care, but for others, it's a concern. Using a manual sync method with your own cloud storage (like a encrypted folder) gives you more control. You're trading convenience for privacy. It's a personal choice, but it's worth being aware of what you're trading for that seamless 'open and continue' experience.
