Laws. They keep talking about comprehending the laws of fire, space, time. It starts with basic elemental manipulation but escalates into controlling fundamental forces of the world. Nie Li's advantage is his pre-existing understanding from his previous life, so he's basically speed-running the comprehension everyone else struggles with for centuries. The powers aren't just about blasting energy; they're about deeper cosmic rules, which gets philosophical fast.
The powers get so convoluted later on it's honestly a bit silly. Everyone's got some sort of 'soul force' or 'laws' they're trying to grasp. The core ones start with Nie Li's demon spirits—like the Shadow Devil and the Azure Dragon—that give him specific abilities. But the real meat is in the cultivation realms, right? Mortal, Heavenly Fate, Heavenly Star... they keep stacking. The manga visuals make the 'soul realm' powers look cool, all those glowing auras and spectral beasts.
What stuck with me was how the power system ties directly to knowledge from Nie Li's past life. He's not just getting stronger; he's applying future insights, which breaks the usual 'train hard' trope. The 'Time-Space Demon Spirit Book' is basically his cheat code, letting him manipulate space and time way earlier than anyone should. It gets a bit messy when they introduce 'Dao of Inscriptions' and 'Demon Lord's power' later, but the early blend of martial arts and spiritual energy is solid.
I mainly read for the art, and the powers look incredible on the page. The way different elemental energies are drawn—flames, lightning, ice—is just stunning. Nie Li's shadow powers have this dark, smoky aesthetic that really sets him apart from the more traditional cultivators with their golden light shows.
It's a pretty standard xianxia progression system when you boil it down: body refinement, qi condensation, forming a core, that whole deal. The 'demon spirit' integration is the unique hook, letting characters almost 'equip' different magical creatures for varied skill sets. Makes the fight scenes less predictable.

I think the main cast of 'Tales of Demon and God' really hinges on Nie Li, our time-traveling protagonist, but the supporting characters around him are just as vital to the story's appeal. Ye Ziyun is his central love interest, and her development from the academy's ice queen to a powerful partner is a huge draw for me. Xiao Ning'er provides a different, fiercely loyal dynamic, and her unrequited feelings add a bittersweet layer. You can't forget about the antagonists either—Sage Emperor and Dark Guild Leader—they're what drive the external conflict and give Nie Li his monumental goals.
Honestly, the character I find myself re-reading scenes for is Du Ze. He's the comic relief, but his unwavering friendship with Nie Li gives the series its heart. The manga does a great job balancing the huge ensemble, making even the side characters from Glory City feel distinct. My only gripe is sometimes the pacing rushes their growth a bit to keep up with Nie Li's insane power scaling.
