It's 19 books in the main Armand Gamache series. I think some people get thrown off because the UK titles for a couple of the books are different—'A Rule Against Murder' is 'The Murder Stone' there, and 'How the Light Gets In' was originally going to be called something else. The series really evolves, too. The first few are more classic village mysteries, but by the time you hit 'The Beautiful Mystery,' it shifts into deeper, more psychological territory with ongoing plots about corruption that span several books. My personal favorite is still 'Bury Your Dead' because of the dual historical storyline in Québec City. The audiobooks are a great option if you commute; the first dozen are narrated by Ralph Cosham, whose voice is pure comfort.

Just got around to binging them all last winter and had to make my own list. The official count is nineteen novels in the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series, starting with 'Still Life' in 2005 and running through 'The Grey Wolf,' which came out in 2024. The twentieth, 'The Murder of Mrs. Astor,' is scheduled for fall 2024, so the list is still growing. Penny tends to put one out nearly every November, which makes planning my autumn reading easy.

I'd advise anyone jumping in to read them in order, no exceptions. The character arcs for Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and the whole Three Pines ensemble build so carefully across the books. Major life events, career shifts, and even the evolving atmosphere of the village itself would lose their impact if you read out of sequence. The later books, especially after 'The Beautiful Mystery,' start dealing with the fallout of a certain plotline that reshapes the entire Sûreté du Québec.

Some collections or lists might also include her standalone non-Gamache novel, 'A Rule Against Murder' (which is actually the fourth Gamache book under a different UK title, it gets confusing), or her upcoming non-fiction, but the core series is those nineteen. Audiobook listeners are in for a treat too—Ralph Cosham narrated the early ones, and Robert Bathurst took over later, both are fantastic.

Nineteen, with the twentieth coming this fall. I re-read them every couple of years and always notice new details in the earlier books that foreshadow later events. The publication order is the only order that makes sense for the overarching story.

There are 19 main series books as of today. I've got them all on my shelf, lined up in order. It's 1. 'Still Life', 2. 'A Fatal Grace', 3. 'The Cruellest Month', 4. 'A Rule Against Murder' (sometimes called 'The Murder Stone'), 5. 'The Brutal Telling', 6. 'Bury Your Dead', 7. 'A Trick of the Light', 8. 'The Beautiful Mystery', 9. 'How the Light Gets In', 10. 'The Long Way Home', 11. 'The Nature of the Beast', 12. 'A Great Reckoning', 13. 'Glass Houses', 14. 'Kingdom of the Blind', 15. 'A Better Man', 16. 'All the Devils Are Here', 17. 'The Madness of Crowds', 18. 'A World of Curiosities', and 19. 'The Grey Wolf'. Number 20 is already announced for later this year. If you're counting, that's a solid chunk of reading, and honestly, the quality stays remarkably consistent.

Nineteen. I keep a list on my phone because I'm always recommending them. Start with 'Still Life' and just go straight through. Skipping around spoils the long-term character development, especially for Jean-Guy. The latest one, 'The Grey Wolf,' continues a plot thread from a few books back, so order matters a lot.

What are all the Louise Penny books in order of publishing?

Hmm, I think I've only read a couple of these. My mom loves them though. She's always talking about Three Pines and Inspector Gamache. I know the first one is 'Still Life'. The last one she mentioned was 'A World of Curiosities'. Not sure about all the ones in between, sorry. I should probably borrow her copies someday.

What is the complete list in order of Louise Penny books?

The order is crucial for the overarching mystery of the Arnot case and the corruption in the Sureté. It unfolds across several books, especially from 'The Brutal Telling' through 'How the Light Gets In'. So, list time: 'Still Life', 'A Fatal Grace', 'The Cruelest Month', 'A Rule Against Murder', 'The Brutal Telling', 'Bury Your Dead', 'A Trick of the Light', 'The Beautiful Mystery', 'How the Light Gets In', 'The Long Way Home', 'The Nature of the Beast', 'A Great Reckoning', 'Kingdom of the Blind', 'A Better Man', 'All the Devils Are Here', 'The Madness of Crowds', 'A World of Curiosities'. If you read out of order, that multi-book arc will be spoiled and lose its impact. Treat it like a TV series with season-long plots.

I have a friend who read 'All the Devils Are Here' (book 16) first because it's set in Paris and she liked the setting. She enjoyed it but said she felt like she was missing an inside joke the whole time. That's exactly it—the series becomes a collection of inside jokes, callbacks, and emotional shorthand for longtime readers. Order grants you membership.

Check the copyright page in any of the later books; they usually list the series in order. It'll be: 'Still Life', 'A Fatal Grace', 'The Cruelest Month', 'A Rule Against Murder', 'The Brutal Telling', 'Bury Your Dead', 'A Trick of the Light', 'The Beautiful Mystery', 'How the Light Gets In', 'The Long Way Home', 'The Nature of the Beast', 'A Great Reckoning', 'Glass Houses', 'Kingdom of the Blind', 'A Better Man', 'All the Devils Are Here', 'The Madness of Crowds', 'A World of Curiosities', and 'The Grey Wolf'. I use that list when I'm buying them for friends.
