Where Do The Maze Runner Novellas Fit In Chronological Order?
Just finished rereading The Maze Runner trilogy and realized I own the novellas but the timeline placement isn't clear. Should they be read before or alongside the main events for context?

Skipping the novellas means missing some of the best horror elements. 'The Kill Order' has the berserkers and the Flare's early symptoms. 'The Fever Code' has the psychological horror of the kids' testing. The trilogy is more action-adventure with horror dressing.

The chronology is less important than the character connections. Follow Teresa's arc through 'Fever Code' and the trilogy. Follow Newt's through the trilogy and 'Crank Palace'. Follow Thomas through everything. Each character's journey has its own internal timeline that matters more than the calendar.

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone else feel 'The Kill Order' is almost too disconnected? It follows new characters in the immediate aftermath. It's important for world-building, but it doesn't tie directly into Thomas's story until the very end. It feels like a separate, bleak novella that happens to be in the same universe.

Honestly, I read them all out of order as I found them in libraries. It was a confusing mess, but kind of fun piecing the timeline together myself like an archaeologist. I don't recommend it, but it's possible to enjoy the series even with a jumbled sequence.

Okay, but practically, where do you physically place them on the shelf? I have them in publication order because the spine designs match that way. Chronological order would mix up the sizes and styles. A trivial concern, but it matters to my bookshelf aesthetics!

Don’t forget about the short story 'Crank Palace'! It focuses on Newt during the events of 'The Death Cure'. Chronologically, it happens alongside that final book. It’s a heartbreaker, but a must-read for Newt fans. So the full chronological list including everything is: 'The Kill Order', 'The Fever Code', 'The Maze Runner', 'The Scorch Trials', 'Crank Palace' (timeline overlaps with the next one), 'The Death Cure'. The 'Maze Runner Files' is supplemental material you can check out anytime after the first book.
I'm a purist. Publication order is king. You get the story as the author discovered it, with all the intended surprises. But since you're asking for chronological: 'The Kill Order', 'The Fever Code', 'The Maze Runner', 'The Scorch Trials', 'The Death Cure'. 'Crank Palace' is part of the 'Death Cure' timeline. I worry that starting with the prequels makes the world feel overly explained before you even step into the Glade. Half the fun of the first book is the disorientation, the slang, the mystery of it all. You lose that with chronological order.
The chronology was actually the toughest thing for me to get straight, because the publishing order and timeline order are totally different beasts. 'The Kill Order' is a prequel, set about thirteen years before the first 'Maze Runner' book starts. It follows a group of survivors right after the solar flares and the initial Flare outbreak.
Honestly, I’d only read it after finishing the original trilogy—'The Maze Runner', 'The Scorch Trials', and 'The Death Cure'. It gives you context you don’t need going into the main story, and some of its impact relies on knowing what the world becomes. The main trilogy is a tight mystery, and this book answers questions you didn’t even know you had until later.
It doesn’t really change the plot of Thomas’s journey, but it adds this grim layer of backstory about how WICKED came to be and the sheer desperation that started it all. I found myself thinking about Mark and Trina’s sections for days after.
