Are There Any Murder Club Novellas And How Do They Fit In Order?

Longtime fan of The Thursday Murder Club books but feeling lost about optional side stories. Were any novellas released, and if so, how do they slot into the Richard Osman series timeline?

Interesting. I wonder if the author considers the novellas canon, or if they're just fun little 'what-if' stories. That would affect how seriously I take their place in the order. Has he ever said? Sometimes authors write side stuff that isn't strictly part of the main continuity.

Murder Club novellas? Absolutely. There are a few that slot into the overall sequence, mostly published as ebooks or included in special editions. The main ones are 'The Thursday Murder Club Prequel' which is a short story, and 'The Last Devil to Die' had a companion novella released around the same time. They're not essential to the core mystery plots, but they offer delightful character moments and backstory you won't get in the novels. I'd recommend reading them in publication order alongside the main books for the full effect.

You can usually find them on the author's website or through major ebook retailers. They're perfect little bites if you're waiting for the next full novel to come out.

Is there a list somewhere? I feel like I've heard about three different short stories, but I've only ever found one. Was there one released for World Book Day? I remember a lot of UK authors do special short stories for that. I'd love to get my hands on all of them but tracking them down across different retailers and special editions is a chore.

If anyone has a definitive list with titles and where to find them, that would be amazing. My ereader is ready and waiting.

Where do the Women’s Murder Club novellas fit in the James Patterson series order?

8 Answers2026-07-25 22:03:24
The early ones, like 'The 13th Murder,' actually had a bit more meat to them. Later BookShots felt more formulaic and thin, like they were churned out to meet a quota for that imprint. So if you're curious, start with the older novellas. They fit in the middle of the series, around the time when the main novels were still hitting their stride. It's a quality gradient as much as a chronological one. The closer they are to the peak of the series' popularity, the more effort seems to have been put into making them feel like substantial stories rather than afterthoughts.

Isn't it more fun to just… not know? Half the charm of older series like this is discovering random entries out of order. You pick up a novella not knowing where it fits and piece together the timeline from context clues. It activates your inner detective. The club is solving a mystery, and you're solving the mystery of their publication history. It's meta! Embrace the chaos.

Where does the newest Murder Club book fit in the series order?

The series order is a mess online because of all the collaborations and spin-offs. The true 'Women's Murder Club' series, focusing on Lindsay, Claire, Cindy, and Yuki, has 28 books. '26 Seconds' is the 28th. Any list that includes 'The Trial' or 'The Medical Examiner' as main series entries is wrong—those are BookShots. For the core experience, read 1 through 28 in publication order. That's the only way to get the full character journey.

Does the Murder Club series reading order match publication order?

I love this series precisely because it rewards loyalty. Small moments call back to previous books—a joke about a past case, a reference to a character who died. These aren't essential to solve the mystery, but they're the little treats for readers following along in order. It feels like being part of the club yourself, in on the history. If you read out of order, you're just a visitor. Reading in order, you're a member.

Where do the Women’s Murder Club spin‑offs fit in the series order?

Patterson's whole publishing empire is built on series and spin-offs and crossovers. The WMC spin-offs are just a particularly confusing example because they share the exact name as the main series. Compare to his 'Private' series, which has clear sub-series like 'Private London'. The branding is clearer there. Here, it's a historic branding misstep that causes endless confusion. Your confusion is valid and shared by thousands.

How do you read the Murder Club series in chronological order?

7 Answers2026-08-03 22:17:19
I disagree with the 'just publication order' folks a tiny bit. If you're a completionist, the full chronological story event order is: The Prequel short story (1970s), then the four main books in sequence (present day). But the narrative is told in publication order. So read them that way. The prequel is a bonus feature, not chapter one.

Wait, there are short stories? I've read every mainline Women's Murder Club book and had no idea. Where are these even published? Are they e-book exclusives or in anthologies? This is news to me. I guess I have some hunting to do now. Anyone have a link to a list of all the titles?

Which Murder Club book comes first in the series timeline?

7 Answers2026-08-03 03:36:52
Libraries often have the first few books in the series worn out from use, while the later ones are pristine. That should tell you something. '1st to Die' is the gateway. It's the one people borrow to try the series. Many never make it to book twenty, and that's okay. The first novel works as a standalone thriller, but it leaves the door open for more. It's a perfectly constructed pilot episode. It resolves its main case satisfyingly while making you desperately want to spend more time with these women. That's how a series should begin.

What is the complete Murder Club series in order of release?

4 Answers2026-08-03 20:13:29
The publication timeline is key. September 2020, September 2021, September 2022, September 2023. Each title corresponds to those years, respectively. He's like clockwork. It's rare for a series to have such reliable annual releases without a drop in quality. If anything, they've gotten better.
