I'm a stickler for authorial intent. The publishers decided 'The Support and Defend' was the first Jack Ryan Jr. novel. That's the intended entry point. All the backstory you need is woven in. Starting anywhere else is second-guessing the editors and writers who structured the series rollout. Trust the professionals.

After reading a few, they all blend together a bit. The order becomes irrelevant because the formula is so consistent. That's not a criticism—it's a feature. You know exactly what kind of entertainment you're getting each time. So start anywhere. If you like one, you'll probably like them all, regardless of sequence.

What a can of worms! My two cents: if you're a total newcomer to Tom Clancy's world, maybe don't start with Jack Jr. at all. Start with the classic 'The Hunt for Red October' to understand the tone and the universe. Then, if you like that, skip ahead decades later in the timeline to the Jack Jr. books. Starting with Jr. is like starting 'Star Wars' with the sequel trilogy—you'll miss a ton of context about why the galaxy is the way it is.

Goodreads lists are user-generated and often wrong. I've seen lists that include non-Clancy books by similar-sounding authors. For a verified order, check the website of the publisher, Penguin Random House or G.P. Putnam's Sons. They have the official series listing straight from the source. That's the most reliable method beyond the physical books themselves.

The fan wiki is your best friend. They have detailed timelines showing where each book fits, both in publication date and internal chronology. It's the only way I kept track. I'd read a book, then check the wiki to see which one came next in the story. It felt like using a strategy guide for a video game, but for reading.

Jack Saunders wanted one last hurrah before taking the mantle of DS Oil & Gas, the billion-dollar company that his father founded. His friend, Owen, let him borrow his mansion on a tropical island so that he could throw a final party before “marrying” the business that would dominate the rest of his life. He brought his secretary, Brandy, hoping that he could kindle a relationship that would last through the long days and nights of running a company. However, while the party was great, the gold digging woman he brought was not, and Jack resigned himself to a lifetime of loneliness.
That was until he took a walk down the beach and met her. A woman who didn’t recognize him from the tabloids and only saw him, the man behind the money. Of all the women Jack had ever met, there was nobody like Emma LaRue. With one pretend marriage ceremony, she would change his life forever, and become the only one he ever wanted to give his saltwater kisses to.
This novella is the first half of Saltwater Kisses written from Jack’s point-of-view, with a few bonus scenes thrown in as well.

The library is your best friend for this. You can try a few from different starting points without spending a fortune. I sampled three different 'first books' before I settled into the groove with 'Locked On'. It was a trial-and-error process that felt very organic.
Ultimately, you have two valid doors into the series. Door #1: Chronological Integrity (start with 'The Teeth of the Tiger'). Door #2: Narrative Enjoyment (start with 'Dead or Alive'). Neither choice is wrong. Pick the door that matches your personality as a reader.
I chose Door #2 and have zero regrets. The series became an instant favorite. A friend chose Door #1 and almost didn't go through to Door #2 because he found 'Teeth' so dry. I'm glad I chose the door that welcomed me in instead of the one that felt like homework.
A friend of mine jumped straight into 'Locked On' and got totally lost. They had to backtrack to understand the dynamics between Jack Jr. and the Campus.
I tried reading them out of order once and regretted it. The personal relationships and ongoing subplots between characters like John Clark and Ding Chavez make sense only if you follow the timeline. Begin with 'The Teeth of the Tiger.'
Then go to 'Dead or Alive,' 'Locked On,' 'Threat Vector,' and 'Command Authority.' These books have a more epic, global scale. Afterwards, the series becomes more mission-of-the-year but still references past events.
So continue with 'Full Force and Effect,' 'Under Fire,' 'Power and Empire,' 'Line of Sight,' 'Oath of Office,' 'Enemy Contact,' 'Code of Honor,' 'Shadow of the Dragon,' and 'Red Winter.' If you skip, you might miss a reference to a past injury or a relationship development that affects team dynamics.
Anyone else feel like the series found its voice with 'Threat Vector'? The first few were finding their footing after Clancy's passing. 'Threat Vector' and 'Command Authority' have that perfect blend of detailed procedure and globe-trotting action. So the reading order is worth it just to get to that peak. The build-up makes the payoff better. The later books are good too, but that middle stretch is the sweet spot for me.
LOL, my dad has the whole set on his shelf, in order of course. He's very particular about it. He says reading them out of order is 'uncivilized.' I think he just likes the neat row of matching spines. The timeline is important to him, if only for aesthetic shelf organization.
For a completist, don't forget the short stories or crossovers. Some of the events in the mainline Jack Ryan books (the Sr. series) happen concurrently. There's a whole expanded universe timeline that is a nightmare to map. For just the Jack Jr. focused novels, the list everyone's repeating is correct.
I'm just sitting here nodding. I read them all in publication order as they came out over decades. It was a unique experience, growing older alongside the technology and geopolitical shifts in the books. The jump from Cold War submarines to cyberwarfare felt natural because it mirrored real life.
For a new reader now, that context is lost. You're consuming history. My two cents: embrace the anachronisms. Read 'The Hunt for Red October' and enjoy the Cold War tension as a period piece. Then move forward. The order is a roadmap through recent history as seen through Clancy's lens.
