I wonder if we sometimes conflate 'independent' with 'unemotional' or 'combative'. Some of the strongest characters I've read are quietly resilient in domestic spaces. Like Martha in 'The Governess Affair'—a novella, but it packs a punch. She sits on a duke's doorstep demanding justice after being wronged, using sheer stubbornness as her weapon. Her strength is in her refusal to be silenced or paid off, turning a scandal into a negotiation on her terms. It's a quieter, more practical independence. She isn't wielding a sword; she's wielding social expectation and her own unshakeable sense of fairness to build a future for herself. That's a different, deeply satisfying kind of power that anchors the romantic plot instead of being sidelined by it.

For a different take, explore monster romance. The protagonists in books like 'A Soul to Keep' by Opal Reyne are often survivors in hostile worlds, making alliances out of necessity. Their strength is adaptability and forging connections on their own terms, not traditional human power. The independence comes from choosing the monstrous unknown over a stifling 'safe' society.

I get so tired of reading about leads who just wait around for things to happen. A genuinely independent protagonist isn't just a career woman who owns her own business. For me, it's about their internal compass and their willingness to make hard choices that might go against the love interest. Take T. Kingfisher's protagonists, like Marra in 'Nettle & Bone'. She's on a quiet, grueling quest to save her sister from an abusive prince, and the romance with the bone dog? Unexpected, and completely secondary to her mission. She's driven by duty and love for her family, not by finding a partner.
Another angle is emotional independence. So many 'strong' heroines in romance are actually deeply emotionally reactive to the male lead. Someone like January in 'The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy' has a messy, difficult life running a funeral home, and her grumpy dynamic with Hart is born out of two stubborn, self-sufficient people clashing over their duties. She doesn't need saving; she needs an equal who respects her work. Those are the stories that stick with me long after the HEA.

Funny, I just DNF'd a book hyped for its 'strong FMC' because she spent 80% of it internally monologuing about the guy's abs. Real independence shows in action. My benchmark is Jude Duarte from 'The Cruel Prince'. Romance? Please. Her entire arc is about seizing political power in a world designed to keep her helpless. Her relationship with Cardan is a chaotic, toxic negotiation between two ambitious forces, not a rescue. She uses him as much as he uses her, and her primary goal is never to be his queen, but to be powerful in her own right. That kind of ruthless, strategic focus is what I crave. The romance almost feels like a byproduct of their power struggle, which is way more interesting than a destined soulmate plot.

After six years together, Hansel Johnson comes to Miranda Sutton with an arm around his new lover and tells her he wants to break up.
Miranda doesn't kick up a fuss. She packs her things, takes the exorbitant sum of money he gives her as compensation, and moves out without hesitation.
Hansel's friends make bets on how long Miranda can stick it out this time—everyone in Jandersville knows that Miranda is madly in love with Hansel, after all. She loves him so much that she can cast aside her pride, dignity, and temper. They're sure she'll come begging for him to take her back in three days, at most.
But when three days come and go… Hansel's the first to lose his composure. It's his first time giving in to Miranda. He calls her and says, "Have you had enough of this nonsense? If you have, you'd better come back."
Unfortunately for him, he only hears a man chuckle on the other end of the line. "It's too late to change something once it's done, Mr. Johnson. There isn't anything in this world that can turn back time."
"I'm looking for Miranda. Pass the phone to her!" Hansel snaps.
"Sorry, but my girlfriend's too tired. She's just fallen asleep."
