Just pick the one with the cover that speaks to you on the shelf. Seriously. I judge books by their covers all the time, and it led me to 'The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox'—that haunting, empty chair. I was captivated before page one. Her publishers have done a great job with the covers; they often reflect the book's tone perfectly. The muted, painting-like cover of 'The Marriage Portrait' hints at its artistic, historical core. The simple, powerful typography of 'I Am, I Am, I Am' signals its starkness. Trust your gut. There's no wrong door into her world.
Here's a practical library/availability tip: her most recent books ('The Marriage Portrait', 'Hamnet', the memoir) will have the most copies and shortest wait times in library systems. Her earlier novels might be harder to find or only available through inter-library loan. So, a pragmatic order is to read the newest, most available ones first while you place holds on the older titles. Start with 'The Marriage Portrait', then 'Hamnet', then the memoir. By the time you finish those, your hold on 'Instructions for a Heatwave' or 'The Vanishing Act...' might have come in. It's not poetic, but it keeps the momentum going.
Lurking this thread and taking notes. My TBR pile is accusing me of infidelity as we speak.

I'm only familiar with 'Hamnet'. Saw it won all the awards and gave it a shot. It was good, very well-written, but I'm not sure historical fiction is my jam. Are her modern-setting books really different in pace? The prose in 'Hamnet' was gorgeous but sometimes I felt it lingered a bit too long on descriptions for my taste.
