Someone told me to read the later ones first because they're 'more exciting,' but that's terrible advice. The excitement in the later books often comes from seeing how far the characters have come. Lindsay's authority in book 12 is earned through struggles shown in books 1-11. Without that foundation, she's just another tough cop cliché.
The publication order builds the characters into people you care about. Skipping to the 'good bits' robs you of the context that makes those bits good. The order isn't just a list; it's the developmental blueprint for the entire series' emotional core. Treat it with respect for maximum payoff.

I love a series where I don't need a spreadsheet. With Women's Murder Club, your reading order is the publication order. Full stop. The stories are designed as sequential investigations in the lives of the four women. A major event in one book, like a personal loss or a career change, becomes a defining trait for that character in the next.
This consistency is probably why it's so popular in paperback airports and supermarkets. You can grab 'The 19th Christmas' and know it follows '18th Abduction' without a second thought. It respects the reader's time and wallet—no hunting for obscure prequels or worrying about timeline jumps. It's a linear, addictive soap opera with dead bodies.

They don't differ. At all. It's one of the most straightforward series orders in popular fiction. The first book is the origin story of the club, and every book after is a subsequent adventure. There are no flashbacks presented as new novels, no 'Book 8.5' released after book 10 that slots in between earlier events.
This is a deliberate choice for mass-market appeal. Readers can walk into any bookstore, see the latest hardcover, and know it's the next chapter without prior research. It eliminates barrier to entry for ongoing fans. While it may lack the complex, interwoven tapestry of other series, it excels in clarity and reliability—a trade-off that has clearly worked for its massive audience.

Oh, this is an easy one compared to some other sprawling series. They match perfectly. Publication order is the story order. I binged them all last summer and just went by the list on Wikipedia sorted by year. Never hit a snag or felt like I was missing a piece of backstory that was published later. The continuity is tightly managed.
It's actually a strength for casual readers. You don't need a fan-made chart or to wonder if a later-published book is a prequel. You can just grab the next one. The main through-lines are the personal lives of the four leads, and those evolve in real time across the books. Seeing Cindy's career progress or Lindsay's struggles with authority makes the most sense when read sequentially.

This author once failed as a heroine… and returned as something entirely different.
Not as a savior.
But as the villain.
And she didn’t come back empty-handed.
She brought secrets.
She brought sins.
She brought a story that was never meant to be read.
Sinners & Saints is not just a collection of dark romance stories—
It is a confession.
A warning.
And a door best left unopened.
Within these pages lie twisted love stories where desire and destruction walk hand in hand, and every choice comes with a cost.
So the question is simple:
Will you turn away…
or step inside anyway?

Book 1 Saints and Sinners
She was the light to my dark.
The saint to my sinner. with her innocent eyes and devilish curves.
A Madonna that was meant to be admired but never touched.
Until someone took that innocence from her.
She left.
The darkness in my heart was finally complete.
I avenged her, I killed for her, but she never came back.
Until I saw her again. An angel dancing around a pole for money.
She didn’t know I owned that club. She didn’t know I was watching.
This time I won’t let her escape.
I will make her back into the girl I knew.
Whether she likes it or not.
Book 2 Judge and Jury
I can’t stop watching her.
I’m not even sure I want to.
Taylor Lawson, blonde, beautiful, and totally oblivious to how much dangers she’s in.
She’s also the one juror in my upcoming murder trial that hasn’t been bought.
The one who can put me behind bars for a very long time.
I know I should execute her.
After all that’s what I do.
I am the Judge.
I eliminate threats to The Family.
And Taylor is a threat.
But I don’t want to kill her.
Possessing her, making her love me seems like a much better plan for this particular Juror.
Not all cravings are gentle.
This erotica short story collection dives into untamed, forbidden, and dangerously magnetic pull between people, peeling back the polished mask of control to reveal something raw, reckless, and impossibly intoxicating. In these pages, desire doesn’t whisper; it claims. Indulge in a world where passion is the plot, temptation is the language, and satisfaction is only ever a page away.
(The stories can be read in any order as long as they have the same title)
Meet Esmerelda Sleuth. Sleuth is her name and investigating is her game. (Paranormal Investigating, that is.)
Esmerelda makes a good living as an investigator in a rather progressive firm. She lives a stable and sensible life until she meets Lance; an old money "hottie" who works for a real estate firm next to her building. After accepting an invitation for a weekend getaway party, she quickly discovers that Lance has a secret. He is wealthy. That part is true. And, yes, he's procured a job as a realtor in the building next door. His secret is that he belongs to an underground society of humans who didn't abandon their connection to magic centuries ago when religion declared it evil and he has traveled through time specifically to find her and bring her back to his time to marry him. If that isn't enough of a far fetched tale to absorb, he informs her that she was born in his time to a family belonging to that same secret society and was promised in marriage to him as an infant. When enemies who didn't want to see the union of families take place made attempts on her life, her parents sent her into the future and erased her memories of them as a precaution.
Possessing virtually no belief in magic, ghosts, psychics, time travel, etc., it takes some doing on Lance's part to convince her to believe his story and go back with him. When she does, the lies, deceit and attempts on her life start all over again. Will she escape emotionally and physically unscathed?
"The Other Side Of the Mirror" is a steamy-paranormal-romance- mystery-thriller and book one of the Esmerelda Sleuth series.
Strictly speaking, they are the same for the vast majority of the series. James Patterson and his co-authors have released the main series novels in a very linear fashion. I just finished a re-read and did it by publication date, and it flowed perfectly. The only deviation that could be argued is the placement of the short stories and novellas, like 'The Trial' or 'The Medical Examiner'. Those are often published in anthologies or as e-shorts between the major releases. They add flavor but aren't essential to the overarching plots. So if you're a completionist, you'd slot those in based on their release dates between the novels.
The friendship is everything in these books. To see it grow from a tentative alliance into a deeply loyal, ride-or-die group, you need to start at the beginning. A moment in, say, 'The 14th Deadly Sin' where one of them risks everything for another won't hit the same if you haven't seen their entire history.
So, yes, chronological by publication. It's the only way to get the full character-driven payoff that makes the series more than just a string of murder cases.
Wait, there are short stories? I've read every mainline Women's Murder Club book and had no idea. Where are these even published? Are they e-book exclusives or in anthologies? This is news to me. I guess I have some hunting to do now. Anyone have a link to a list of all the titles?
I'm a stickler for order, so I made a spreadsheet. Here's the exact list: 1. 1st to Die, 2. 2nd Chance, 3. 3rd Degree, 4. 4th of July, 5. The 5th Horseman, 6. The 6th Target, 7. 7th Heaven, 8. 8th Confession, 9. The 9th Judgment, 10. 10th Anniversary, 11. 11th Hour, 12. 12th of Never, 13. Unlucky 13, 14. 14th Deadly Sin, 15. 15th Affair, 16. 16th Seduction, 17. 17th Suspect, 18. 18th Abduction, 19. 19th Christmas, 20. 20th Victim, 21. 21st Birthday, 22. 22 Seconds, 23. 23rd Midnight.
Patterson's production line means new ones might be out, so check for updates. The Christmas-themed ones like '19th Christmas' are still part of the main timeline, not standalone holiday specials. Every book expects you to know what came before.
