Man, I practically live for this stuff. Honestly, it's less about finding a single perfect site and more about matching the vibe of the specific ship you're chasing. For the huge, ongoing pairings like those in 'My Hero Academia' or 'Jujutsu Kaisen', Archive of Our Own (AO3) is unbeatable for its tagging system. You can filter out everything you don't want and dive right into 50k words of mutual pining. The quality varies wildly, but the sheer volume means you'll find gold.
If you're after a more community-driven feel, where you can chat in the comments and watch authors update in real time, I still have a soft spot for FanFiction.net. It's clunky and the moderation is a mess, but there's a certain nostalgia to scrolling through pages of Naruto/Sasuke fics from the late 2000s. Tumblr is weirdly essential for visual moodboards, headcanon threads, and those brilliant, short character-study fics that never get posted elsewhere. You kind of have to curate your own experience there, though.
Don't sleep on fandom-specific forums or Discords either. For older anime or super niche pairings, that's often where the dedicated authors huddle. I found the best 'Fullmetal Alchemist' Roy/Ed fic in a forgotten corner of a forum ten years after the manga ended. It's a scavenger hunt, but that's half the fun.

Tumblr and Twitter. Seriously. The fic writers for my current obsession (Gojo/Geto from 'Jujutsu Kaisen') are all there, posting snippets, threads, and links to their AO3. The conversation around the fic is just as fun as the story itself. You get the wips, the asks, the memes. It feels alive.

I'd actually push back on the idea that the biggest platforms are always best for popular ships. The signal-to-noise ratio can be brutal. If you're into, say, Levi/Eren from 'Attack on Titan', searching that tag on AO3 now yields thousands of fics. How do you even start? My method is to follow specific authors I trust on social media, usually Twitter or Bluesky. They'll often link to their own works and recc others. This creates a much more manageable and high-quality reading list. It's a curator model versus an archive model. Also, some fandoms have dedicated recommendation blogs on Tumblr that are meticulously organized by trope and rating. It's more work upfront, but you waste less time sifting through stuff that isn't your taste. The 'popular' experience isn't always about the most stories; it's about finding the right ones for you.

FF.net is my default, no question. It's simple. I don't need fancy tags, I just search the fandom, sort by favorites or reviews, and start reading. The mobile app is kinda janky but it works offline, which is a lifesaver for my commute. AO3's interface overwhelms me a bit—too many options. For popular ships, the top fics on FF.net are usually the classic, well-loved ones that defined the pairing for a lot of people. You might not get the latest experimental AU, but you'll get solid, enjoyable stories that got the community excited in the first place.

One of my absolute favorites has to be Archive of Our Own (AO3)! It’s like a treasure trove of fan fiction across so many fandoms, especially for anime. The search features are super user-friendly, allowing you to filter by tags, ratings, and more. I love diving into the 'My Hero Academia' section there; it feels like a never-ending collection of unique stories that take characters in all sorts of directions. Plus, you can find some really well-written pieces that shine a light on lesser-known characters, giving them the spotlight they often miss in the main story.
Another site that offers a unique experience is FanFiction.net. It’s been around forever, so it has an extensive selection of works that cover classic anime like 'Naruto' and 'One Piece'. What’s cool about FanFiction.net is the community. You can find active forums and discussions, which add another layer of engagement to the reading experience. Every time I visit, I get nostalgic vibes from those early days of discovering fan works online.
Then there's Wattpad, which is increasingly becoming a space for fan fiction. The writing style varies widely here—some stories are more polished, while others have that raw, indie flavor. It’s also refreshing to see newer series being written about! If you’re into series like 'Demon Slayer' or 'Tokyo Revengers', you might just stumble upon hidden gems that are completely new to you. My personal experience has been a mix of finding awesome stories and discovering new authors that inspire me to write myself!
Lastly, I'm emerging from the shadows to mention even Tumblr. Yes, it’s not a dedicated fanfiction site, but the community there thrives on creativity. You can find plenty of standalone one-shots and even some collaborative narratives. The beauty lies in the way stories intersect with fan art and discussions—sometimes, the stories come alive through visuals and memes, creating a whole new experience! It’s definitely worth checking out if you enjoy a multi-faceted approach to fandom.
