Hmm, I'm not sure I have a perfect recommendation. I mostly read long fantasy series, so short fiction isn't really my area. I'm lurking here to see what others suggest though—maybe I should branch out too!
Finally, don't force it. If you pick up a highly-recommended short book and it's not clicking by page 30, put it down. Life is too short. The point is to find joy, not to complete a chore. The right book at the wrong time is still the wrong book.
Your taste as an adult is different than it was when you were younger. It might take a few tries to find what resonates with you now. That's okay. The browsing, the sampling, the abandoning—that's all part of the process of becoming a reader again. Give yourself permission to be picky.
Pay attention to the physical book itself. For a beginner, a beautifully designed, slim volume from a publisher like Fitzcarraldo Editions or And Other Stories can be an object of desire. Something like 'The Factory' by Hiroko Oyamada—a strange, short novel about workplace alienation. Holding a nice book, feeling its weight, enjoying the typography—it makes the act of reading feel special and intentional.
This sensory experience can be a big part of re-engaging as an adult. It turns reading time into a deliberate ritual of self-care, away from screens. The book as an artifact adds to the pleasure.
For a complete change of pace, try a short, illustrated novel or a graphic novel hybrid. 'The Strange Library' by Haruki Murakami is a weird, short, illustrated tale that feels like a dark children's book for adults. 'The One Hundred Nights of Hero' by Isabel Greenberg is a graphic novel that's a feminist fairy tale.
The visuals support the text, making it easier to slip into the world. It's a different cognitive load, which can be welcome. You're still reading a substantial narrative, but the art does some of the descriptive heavy lifting, creating a rich experience that's still relatively quick.

This Erotic collection is loaded with hot, graphic sex! It is intended only for adults over the age of 18 and all characters are represented as 18 or over.
Read, Enjoy, and tell me your favorite story.
For a darkly comic, quick hit, try 'Convenience Store Woman' by Sayaka Murata. It's a short novel about a woman who finds purpose in the rigid routines of a convenience store. The protagonist's worldview is so uniquely logical it's hilarious and heartbreaking.
The social commentary is sharp, but the book is so weird and specific it doesn't feel like it's lecturing you. It's a brisk, unforgettable character study that flies by.
One of my all-time favorite short stories for beginners is 'The Lottery' by Shirley Jackson. It's a gripping tale that starts off innocently enough, with a small town gathering for an annual tradition, but the shocking twist at the end leaves readers stunned. The simplicity of the language makes it accessible, while the dark undertones keep you hooked. Another great pick is 'The Tell-Tale Heart' by Edgar Allan Poe. It's short, intense, and perfect for those who enjoy psychological thrillers. The unreliable narrator adds layers to the story, making it a fantastic introduction to deeper literary analysis.
If you're into something lighter, 'The Gift of the Magi' by O. Henry is a heartwarming classic about love and sacrifice. The irony in the ending is both clever and touching, making it a memorable read. For sci-fi fans, 'The Veldt' by Ray Bradbury is a must. It explores technology's impact on family dynamics in a way that feels eerily relevant today. These stories are short but pack a punch, ideal for easing into the world of fiction without feeling overwhelmed.
