How Does Tess Gerritsen’S Latest Book Connect To The Rizzoli & Isles Series?
As a longtime fan of the Rizzoli & Isles books, hoping the new novel brings back that great forensic crime thriller dynamic we love.

It doesn't connect at all, and that’s totally fine by me. Authors aren’t machines; they need to write other stories. 'Listen to Me' is its own thing—a deep dive into paranoia and the secrets hiding in plain sight in suburbia. The procedural elements are lighter than in the Rizzoli & Isles books. The focus is more on the psychological strain between the main couple as they investigate. It shows Gerritsen can build compelling characters outside of her famous franchise. I’d recommend it to fans of her writing, but with the clear caveat that it's a standalone detour.

It’s unrelated, and that’s a good business decision. Standalone thrillers often have broader appeal and can be adapted into movies or limited series more easily without dealing with established series canon. This could be her play for that kind of adaptation potential. The Rizzoli & Isles TV show had its run; maybe 'Listen to Me' is being positioned for its own screen life. So the connection might be in the future media landscape, not the story itself.

Wait, so her latest isn't part of the series at all? That explains why my library app didn't list it under 'Rizzoli & Isles'. I was so confused. Guess I'll move it to my general thriller list then.

The only way they’re connected is that they exist in the same real world. No cameos, no mentions of Boston Homicide. It’s a clean break. Part of me wonders if this is a testing ground for retiring the old series. If 'Listen to Me' sells really well, maybe she’ll feel more comfortable leaving Jane and Maura’s stories as a completed canon. It’s a bittersweet thought, but all good things must end, right?

For five years, Elena Frost endured a loveless marriage, sacrificing her billionaire heiress identity to become the shadow wife of Marcus Thorne, the man who only married her because she resembled his dead fiancée.
She played the role perfectly, quiet, obedient, invisible. She watched him grieve another woman while sleeping beside her. She forgave his coldness, his distance, his cruelty.
Until the night she discovered the truth: His “dead” fiancée, Isabelle, wasn’t dead at all. She’d faked her death, married a dying tycoon for his fortune, and now she was back, ready to reclaim Marcus and destroy Elena in the process.
The final betrayal comes wrapped in humiliation: a sadistic contract orchestrated by Isabelle and five powerful men, designed to break Elena’s spirit and prove she was never worthy of Marcus. When Elena uncovers the conspiracy and realizes her husband orchestrated her degradation, she vanishes into the rain-soaked night, leaving behind the meek woman Marcus thought he knew.
But Marcus Thorne has no idea what he’s unleashed.
Because Elena Frost is actually Elena Vittoria Frost-Accardi, the hidden princess of the Accardi Empire, the world’s most powerful crime syndicate masquerading as a legitimate business conglomerate. Her five brothers are legends whispered in fear across continents. Her father is a king who toppled governments before breakfast.
And Dante Accardi, the Don who has watched Elena from the shadows since she was seventeen, is done waiting.
After one explosive night of vengeance and passion, Dante makes his intentions clear: Elena belongs to him now. He’ll burn down anyone who hurt her, starting with Marcus Thorne.

Meet Esmerelda Sleuth. Sleuth is her name and investigating is her game. (Paranormal Investigating, that is.)
Esmerelda makes a good living as an investigator in a rather progressive firm. She lives a stable and sensible life until she meets Lance; an old money "hottie" who works for a real estate firm next to her building. After accepting an invitation for a weekend getaway party, she quickly discovers that Lance has a secret. He is wealthy. That part is true. And, yes, he's procured a job as a realtor in the building next door. His secret is that he belongs to an underground society of humans who didn't abandon their connection to magic centuries ago when religion declared it evil and he has traveled through time specifically to find her and bring her back to his time to marry him. If that isn't enough of a far fetched tale to absorb, he informs her that she was born in his time to a family belonging to that same secret society and was promised in marriage to him as an infant. When enemies who didn't want to see the union of families take place made attempts on her life, her parents sent her into the future and erased her memories of them as a precaution.
Possessing virtually no belief in magic, ghosts, psychics, time travel, etc., it takes some doing on Lance's part to convince her to believe his story and go back with him. When she does, the lies, deceit and attempts on her life start all over again. Will she escape emotionally and physically unscathed?
"The Other Side Of the Mirror" is a steamy-paranormal-romance- mystery-thriller and book one of the Esmerelda Sleuth series.
Five years ago, struggling law student Isla Monroe fell in love with a charming stranger during a whirlwind summer in Tuscany. He was kind, generous, and intensely private. When she discovered she was pregnant, he was already gone—and she had no way of finding him. What she didn’t know was that he was Lucien Wolfe, a reclusive tech billionaire hiding from the world after a public betrayal.
Now, their worlds collide when Lucien acquires the struggling startup where Isla works. He’s no longer the soft-spoken man she once knew—he’s ruthless, guarded, and intent on control. But the moment he sees her, something shifts. He doesn’t remember her name, but he remembers her—and Isla knows it’s only a matter of time before he discovers the truth about the little boy with his eyes.
LOL, all this analysis. My mom just bought it because she likes the covers with birds on them. She'll have no idea it's part of a series until she gets to the end and sees a preview for the next one. Then she'll call me to complain she has to wait.
Yep, 'The Spy Coast'. November 2023. It’s good! Not her usual medical mystery, but the woman knows how to plot a thriller. The protagonist is older, which is a nice change from the typical 30-something leads.
You get this sense of lived-in experience and regret that adds a lot of depth. The action scenes are crisp, and the mystery of her past unravels at a great clip. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes character-driven suspense.
