Is 'The Diamond Eye' A True Story Or Fictional?

Just finished Kate Quinn's novel and feeling torn. The historical heroine feels incredibly real, but some events seem novelized. Are we dealing with a biography or creative fiction based on real history?

This is a completely fictional story but it was very researched into female Soviet snipers during WWII so it feels very real to the setting. There’s another fictional story that uses a historical setting to create lots of tension. ‘Under The Devil’s Eyes’ is a supernatural thriller set in a 19th century asylum. It follows a doctor who is trying to solve a murder within the asylum but at the same time he is battling against a very possessive entity. He is granted some very cruel insights by the entity which makes for a very compelling read as the doctor tries to solve the mystery while trying to come to terms with what is happening to him.

As with much historical fiction, the skeleton of fact is covered over with flesh and blood of imagination: the personalities, relationships and even minute-by-minute tensions are created by the author. But here the author has worked with fantastic material: a female Soviet sniper who became an American propaganda icon. The author’s job is to imagine what that must have been like – what her greatest fears were, what personal costs she paid. The result is a highly imaginative work, grounded in a thoughtful exploration of what could have been. Not true, but truth-adjacent, and of far more power than purely invented material.

My two cents: A novel is first and last a novel. That the book is framed as ‘true story’ is simply the premise on which the novel is based: ‘what if this real thing happened?’ and then the author carries on from there. All the dialogue and all the internal thoughts of the characters, and all the specific confrontations that take place between them or alone – all of these are novelcraft. I don’t think anyone would accuse Shakespeare of fraud because he took lots of liberties with his historical ‘true story’ dramas. We consider them to be drama. Consider this book to be a first-rate thriller, set against the background of history, and it is a first-rate thriller. (Consider it to be a barely adequate historical novel, written as a documentary in prose, and it is barely adequate.) Read it for character and for suspense, and let the historical context be merely an added bonus.

The most obvious aspect of fiction in the book is its structure. History does not have a three-act plot, nor a climax to a conflict. The novelist has organized the facts into a dramatic and satisfying narrative. The facts are the ingredients, the plot is the recipe. The same ingredients can be used to make many different dishes; the book under review is one delicious story made with the true events of history. It is not the only possible story, nor are the facts served up raw.

I love how The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn straddles fact and fiction so expertly. It is well known that Lyudmila Pavlichenko was a real-life woman of action – her numbers as a sniper, and her real-life role in the war are not made up. However, Quinn’s novel is a work of fiction, and she invents a plot to assassinate the man who was to be Germany’s Sea Lord, as well as a whole host of other personal Vendettas along the way. This novel feels like the real Pavlichenko all the better for being a fictional work. In essence it is a very true version of her life, all buffed up to full story-telling capacity by the author. Just as you would expect a good war-story to be from a battle-scarred and charismatic oldster – all the really important bits are there, but embellished out for full impact.
