Don't forget the fan favorite 'Kiss of Deception' by Mary E. Pearson. It's the first in a series with a slow-burn romance where identities and pasts are hidden. The 'second chance' element comes later in the series when a character believed lost gets an opportunity to rebuild burned bridges in a new context. The payoff requires patience but is worth it.

I keep thinking about 'The Sight of You' by Holly Miller. It's not time travel in the sci-fi sense, but the male protagonist has prophetic dreams of the future. He sees his own relationship with the female lead ending in tragedy, so the whole book is about whether knowing the future gives you a second chance to change it, or if it just dooms you. Incredibly moving.

The audiobook for 'The Midnight Library' by Matt Haig is a great listen. While the romantic subplot isn't the center, the protagonist's journey through infinite lives where she made different choices shows her revisiting past relationships. It's a meditation on regret and the possibility of finding contentment, including romantic contentment, in paths you didn't take.

For pure, soapy, dramatic fun, the 'Lady of Devices' series (Steampunk!) has elements of this. The heroine reinvents herself from a society dropout to an engineering genius. Her romantic arc involves a former rival/acquaintance seeing her in this completely new light years later, building a partnership based on respect that simply wasn't possible in their first social context.

I'm gonna be that person and say the 'All Souls' trilogy (starting with 'A Discovery of Witches') does the immortal/mortal second chance thing really well. Matthew has loved and lost over 1500 years, and Diana represents a completely new beginning for him—a chance to love without the shadow of past tragedies consuming him, which is a kind of time-travel romance in emotional terms.

Isn’t it funny how love works?
I have always loved Dreston, and he has always been the one for me—my first love. As a child, I loved him, as a teenager, nothing changed. And now, even as his wife, I still couldn’t love him any less.
But he only ever loved Tina—my teenage best friend. She came into our lives and didn’t just take him away from me. She took my happiness, my laughter, and even the girl I used to be.
I still remember her words to me:
“You knew he was mine, yet you married him.”
She made me feel like I was the villain. Maybe I was foolish to believe that love alone would bring him back to me. But nothing changed. He would always love her.
I finally gave up the day I signed the divorce papers. I learned to let go, to move on, and to start fresh. And just when I had finally decided to start my life again—just when the universe rewarded me with a man who loved me unconditionally…
Dreston came running back.
Now he wants a second chance.
**Recommended, but not necessary, to read The Reluctant Alpha before reading Her Second Chance Mate.**

For three years, Rachel lived a double life—his wife in private, his secretary in public.
Bound to billionaire Slade Pierce by a secret marriage contract, she followed two impossible rules: no children, no falling in love.
She broke them both.
With the contract’s final days ticking away, Rachel discovered she was pregnant. Afraid of shattering Slade’s trust and certain he was meant to marry another, she signed the divorce papers and vanished, determined to protect her unborn children from a love she believed was never real.
Then fate intervened.
A tragic accident stole her memories, her name, her life. To the world and to Slade, Rachel was dead.
Years later, Slade still lives with her ghost. He’s built an empire, but his heart never healed. Until the day he sees her again—alive, breathing, and looking at him like he’s a stranger.
Rachel doesn’t remember the secret marriage. She doesn’t remember the nights they shared or the promises they broke. Yet something deep inside her stirs whenever he’s near, a connection she can’t explain, a pain she doesn’t understand.
As fragments of the past begin to surface, so do the secrets that tore them apart.
Will she remember the man who never stopped loving her?
Can love survive even when memory is gone,
or is fate about to take her away all over again?

Life stopped for Arielle seven years ago when her childhood lover Zachary left her life. It was a mutual break up but little did they know that life had other plans for her.
Seven years later, Arielle is a successful writer with dozens of bestselling books under her belt. Her father has found a potential match for her. However, when she is left at the altar once again by the second man she trusted, Zachary is back to pick up her broken pieces.
Everything changed when Zachary asked for Arielle’s hand in marriage at the same altar where she was left.
Years have passed, but his feelings are the same, and this time he refuses to let her go. This time he had to make her realise that they are made for each other and he was a fool to let her go once upon a time.
Join Arielle and Zachary’s journey to read their second-chance romance.
The 'miscommunication trope' is often the engine of the initial breakup in these stories, and it's a point of contention. Some readers hate it; others find it realistic. The NYT bestsellers often use a 'big secret' or a single tragic misunderstanding rather than just poor communication.
This elevates it from petty to plot-worthy. In 'Love and Other Words,' the reason for the silence is a traumatic event. In 'One True Loves,' it's a literal disappearance. The secret has to be big enough to justify years apart, yet surmountable enough for a happy ending. The commercial success of these books suggests that, when done well, readers will accept a large-scale miscommunication as the catalyst. It's a balancing act the bestselling authors have nailed.
I absolutely adore romance novels that mix time travel with heartfelt emotions. One standout is 'The Time Traveler's Wife' by Audrey Niffenegger. It’s not just about the sci-fi element; the way Henry and Clare’s love transcends time is achingly beautiful. The non-linear narrative keeps you hooked, and their struggles feel so raw and real. Another gem is 'Outlander' by Diana Gabaldon. Claire’s journey from 1945 to 1743 Scotland is packed with historical richness and steamy romance. The cultural clashes and Jamie’s unwavering loyalty make it impossible to put down.
For something lighter, 'What the Wind Knows' by Amy Harmon blends Irish history with a tender love story. The protagonist’s accidental trip to 1921 Ireland feels magical, and the romance is swoon-worthy. If you prefer a darker twist, 'Recursion' by Blake Crouch explores love and memory across timelines with mind-bending precision. The emotional stakes are sky-high, and the sci-fi elements are brilliantly executed. Each of these books offers a fresh take on love’s resilience against the chaos of time.
Have you considered 'The City in the Middle of the Night' by Charlie Jane Anders? It's not strictly time travel, but it deals with a society living on a tidally locked planet, where time is experienced in eternal day or night. The central, intense relationship between Sophie and Mouth is explored against this backdrop of environmental and temporal extremism. Their bond is about survival and understanding in a world without normal time cycles, which creates a similar feeling of dislocation and unique intimacy.
For a dark, philosophical take, try 'The Man Who Folded Himself' by David Gerrold. It's a classic. It's less a romance with another person and more a dizzying, solipsistic exploration of a man's relationship with other versions of himself across time. It deals with love, identity, and loneliness in a way that's deeply unsettling and thought-provoking. Not a happy romance by any means, but a brilliant sci-fi exploration of intimacy through time travel.
Can we get more where the setting is Hanukkah or Kwanzaa? The core trope of reflection, light, and renewal fits those holidays beautifully. A second-chance romance set during the eight nights of Hanukkah, with each night representing a step in rekindling a connection, would be amazing. The lighting of the candles could parallel the slow return of hope and warmth.
Or a Kwanzaa story focusing on the principles like Umoja (Unity) and Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) as a framework for two people rebuilding a relationship on healthier terms. The cultural specificity would add such rich layers to the emotional journey. The holiday wouldn't just be a backdrop of pretty decorations, but an active, meaningful part of the healing process. The market for these is growing, and I'm here for every single one.
