I kind of roll my eyes at most of these, honestly. They often feel like a lazy excuse for an overpowered Jaune arc or to dunk on a hated character. 'Oh look, here's a world where Jaune is a god-king and everyone loves him, and now canon Jaune feels bad.' Yawn. The truly unique setups get buried under that stuff.
But when they work? There was this one-shot where they watched a universe that was basically a sitcom. No Grimm, no Salem, just them as normal students at Beacon Academy with petty dorm dramas and bad dates. The contrast was genius. Weiss being a hilariously bad roommate obsessed with tidiness, and Ruby just wanting to build model airships. The 'unique world' was mundane normality, and watching the canon characters, who are constantly fighting for their lives, react to a life they can never have—that was a gut punch no apocalypse scenario ever delivered.

The whole appeal of 'RWBY watches' fics for me is that fractured mirror thing. You've got the cast of 'RWBY'—Remnant, Dust, Grimm, all that—watching infinite versions of themselves. One story had them viewing a world where Salem won, a dead earth overrun by Grimm, and seeing their own failures rendered in finality. It's not just about cool action scenes from other dimensions; it's the psychological horror of Ruby seeing a version of herself who became a tyrant to ensure survival, or Blake watching a Faunus revolution that succeeded through horrific violence.
Those unique worlds serve as brutal 'what if' machines. I remember one where Team RWBY watched a universe that blended with 'Attack on Titan'—Remnant's Kingdoms behind Walls, with Grimm as the Titans. The sheer dread on Yang's face, described as she saw a version of herself lose an arm to a Grimm-Titan, hit harder than any crossover fight scene. The unique worlds are rarely just settings; they're character studies in extreme pressure. The fic's tension came from the silence between reactions, not the footage itself.

My favorite variant is when the 'world' is another story's narrative logic imposed on Remnant. Like, they watch a version of their lives told as a classic fairy tale, with a narrator, musical numbers, and a guaranteed happy ending. The horror isn't from grimdark outcomes, but from the realization that their reality lacks that inherent structure and safety. It makes their own struggles feel chaotic and meaningless by comparison, which is a far more interesting existential crisis than just seeing another battle.

Archive of Our Own remains my first stop for this specific niche, not only because the tagging system is robust but also because you can filter for exactly what you're looking for. I search 'RWBY' plus 'Reaction' or 'Watches' in the additional tags, and then sort by kudos or bookmarks. The 'Multiverse' tag often gets used there, too. It saves a lot of time sifting through general crossover fics.
AO3 writers have gotten really creative with the 'watch' trope. I've read one where Team RWBY reacted to the 'Justice League' animated series, and another where they saw a timeline where Pyrrha survived. The plots vary wildly, from pure comedy to something that actually develops the characters. Finding the ones with original settings is trickier, but if the summary mentions an 'alternate Remnant' or 'what if' scenario, that's usually a good sign. The real struggle is finding a fic that's both complete and well-written.
I'd also cross-check on FanFiction.net, honestly. Their categorization is messier, but some older, long-running stories in the RWBY section are hidden there. Search for 'RWBY watches' in the title. You might stumble upon a forgotten epic.
Fandom space is wild for this one because 'reaction fics' with the cast watching their own world or others have this specific appeal. I've been through a ton of them, and quality varies so much—some are pure power fantasy cringe, others nail the character voices in a way the show sometimes forgets. A solid one I keep going back to is 'Reaction Time' by Coeur Al'Aran. It's a crossover with his own massive 'Forged Destiny' AU, so the cast is reacting to a version of themselves in a fantasy MMO world. The character interactions are sharp, especially Jaune's horror at his alternate self's choices. It doesn't just rehash canon; it uses the viewing as a catalyst for in-story development, which is rare.
Another that hooked me is 'RWBY Watches The Cinematic Multiverse' by Spartan-091. The title's clunky but the concept works: they pull from various movie universes. Seeing Team RWBY analyze, say, the politics of 'The Dark Knight' or the sheer scale of 'Avengers: Endgame' creates these fun debates about heroism and sacrifice. It's less about shock value and more about perspective, which I prefer. Some authors just drown you in 'OMG' reactions, but the good ones make the watching a character study.
The format itself is tricky. A lot of fics die because summarizing hours of footage gets tedious for the writer. The best ones, like the two I mentioned, know when to skip ahead, focus on a single character's silent reaction, or cut to a scene outside the viewing room. It's a balancing act between the spectacle and the quiet aftermath.
The focus usually shifts from the plot of the show to pure character study. Seeing different versions of themselves—or even seeing their own canon actions from an outside perspective—forces conversations they'd otherwise avoid. A villain variant of Ruby might make her confront her own capacity for ruthlessness, while a timeline where Pyrrha lives could force Jaune into an emotional spiral he's been suppressing. The appeal isn't the 'watching' gimmick itself, but using it as a locked-room device. They can't walk away from the screen, so they have to process things in real time, leading to breakdowns, confessions, or alliances that feel earned because the catalyst is so bizarre.
Most writers lean into the dissonance between public reaction and private thought. Weiss might critique a scene's tactical flaws out loud to maintain composure, while her internal monologue is reeling from seeing her father's abuse play out on screen. That layered response is where the real character work happens. Honestly, the 'Reacting to the Multiverse' trope can get repetitive, but when it's done right, it functions like forced group therapy for the cast.
