I actually think a lot of fans overcomplicate this by trying to be too literal. The boldest characters in the books sometimes have deceptively simple names. Look at Firestar. 'Fire' is fierce, yeah, but it's also warm and bright—it's his charisma and courage, not just brute strength. For a cunning type, think about what that cat values. Are they observant? Try something like Watcheye or Prickleear. Are they manipulative with words? Maybe Honey-tongue, though that might be too on-the-nose for the universe.
Honestly, the suffix matters more than the prefix for conveying personality. A 'heart' suffix can mean bravery or stubbornness. 'Fang' or 'claw' suggests a direct threat, but 'step' or 'foot' could imply a spy or scout. My tip is to pick a suffix that fits the core trait, then find a prefix that sounds natural with it. Don't force a 'shadow' or 'night' onto every sly cat; a clever cat could be called Bristle-tail, if their intelligence lies in sensing danger and bristling at the right moment.

Man, finding a good name for a sly or fearless cat is half the fun of writing a 'Warrior Cats' fan character. The best names often pair a clever prefix with a sharp or clever suffix. For a bold one, you can't go wrong with something like Lionheart or Hawkstorm—big, aggressive imagery that announces they're a force. But for cunning, I love the subtler ones. Snakewhisper or Foxshadow hint at danger without screaming it. They're the ones you don't see coming until it's too late.
My absolute favorite for a trickster is something like Mothwing. It sounds delicate, maybe even a bit useless, which is the perfect disguise. A character named Mothwing could be the most brilliant strategist in the clan because everyone underestimates them. It plays on expectations. I used a similar idea for a fanfic character named Shrewstep—tiny, quick, always two moves ahead. Avoid the overly obvious like 'Darkcunning' or 'Slypaw'; the series itself is better than that. The real masters of naming, like the Erins, give you a feel for the cat's soul in two syllables.

Bold names need strong, immediate sounds: Bramble, Rock, Storm. Cunning names often use softer consonants or natural camouflage: Ash, Fern, Dove. The juxtaposition can be powerful. A tiny she-cat named Vixen-fang is instantly intriguing.
One angle I rarely see discussed is using names that reflect a skill, not just an attitude. A bold hunter might be Talon-strike. A cunning negotiator could be Creek-smooth, after the sound of persuasive, flowing water. It's less about the abstract trait and more about how that trait manifests in the world. That's how you get a name that feels lived-in, not just a label slapped on.

Lauren is a fearless woman who is driven by a burning desire for revenge to take back her father's pack from her power-hungry uncle who attacked her father's pack and killed her parents.
She is well known for her physical strength but some pack members don't like her for being wolfless, Unknown to the pack, she is the most powerful wolf alive but her adoptive parents kept it secret to protect her.
What will be the fate of Lauren when she discovers she is the mate of the notorious alpha Logan, the cruel and famous alpha of the Snow Moon pack?
When sparks ignite between the two powerful wolves, will Lauren push forward with her plan to reclaim her pack and her throne as the Alpha king of the kingdom or will she give in to the mate bond?
The year is 2232 in a post-apocalyptic realm, where shifters and humans are far and few between. The packs are still at war, ranking females are in high demand and humans struggle to survive under the laws of shifters.
Gabriel Grayson is the alpha of the Renegade pack, a pack for hire. They are seen as deserters, rogues, who go against everything a pack ought to be in this era. Paid for their services as mercenaries, they didn’t care what the cause was, just who could put their money where their mouth was.
That is until Gabe meets Hope Jordan, better known as Stixs. A sassy and gutsy blond, who has Gabe thinking twice about whose money to take and which side he should be fighting with.
With impending war between the Raven Knights and Cardinal Moon pack, Stix’s father reaches out to the Renegades, in a desperate attempt to save his daughter and his pack.
When the Renegades are offered a substantial amount more to fight for the enemy, it’s more than Stix’s father has, and she finds herself willing to submit to the power-hungry Alpha Crane who is willing to start a war just so he can have her.
Until she meets Gabe Grayson, the mysterious and dangerous Renegade; His looks and brooding have Stixs drawn to him, and she hoped he would be the one to save her from the clutches of their enemy.
Gabe has a choice to make, the highest bidder or doing the right thing.
Can Stixs convince Gabe and his renegades that she is worth fighting for or will she have to give in to save the lives of her pack?
Because no one survives The Renegades.
Yūri: I was raised in this world of shadows, violence, and blood. It isn't the life I would choose, but I don't get a choice. I'm my father's only child and heir. I've been groomed to lead our clan's yakuza. I want to be free. And one way or another, I'm going to be. I just need to get away from my family and avoid the sexy detective who's on my tail.
Hibiki: This case could make or break my career. I'm pretty sure my captain gave me the Kitsune case just to see me fail. No one has been able to catch her, and now I'm expected to. It would be easier to focus on the case if I could stop daydreaming about that naked protestor. I didn't even get her name.
This book is a prequel/sequel to The Princes of Ravenwood. You do not need to have read The Princes of Ravenwood to enjoy this book, but it is encouraged.

Ofelia Rosario - I take pride in being smart, careful, and independent. Fostering a pregnant cat was supposed to be the one soft thing in my life—until the fire. I stayed too long trying to save Spitfire, and I nearly didn’t make it out. But Zach Dayton pulled me from the flames—calm, strong, and way too charming. He’s everything I shouldn’t want. Everything that scares me. But he keeps showing up, helping, and making me laugh when I want to cry. And Spitfire? She seems convinced we belong together. Maybe love isn’t something you can logic your way around. Maybe it’s something you lean into.
Zach Dayton - Falling in love isn’t supposed to feel more dangerous than running into a burning building. But then there’s Ofelia—stubborn, guarded, beautiful Ofelia. I was just doing my job when I found her trying to shield a pregnant cat from the smoke. But the second I saw her, something shifted. I’ve always believed I’m not built for love—too much loss, too many close calls. But she makes me want to try anyway. The way she looks at me, the way she fights for that cat, for herself… she doesn’t need a hero. But maybe she’ll let me be hers anyway.
Book 8 in the Ravenwood Series. It can be read as a standalone. However, to learn about the characters and past events that may be referenced, you should check out the rest of the series.

"You're either brave," Aaron said quietly, his accent thickening just enough when he was irritated, "or you have no sense of self-preservation."
I didn't look away.
His dark eyes burned - calculating, controlled, dangerous. The kind of Alpha who didn't need to raise his voice to be obeyed. The kind who was born into power and sharpened by it.
"Maybe I just don't scare easily," I said smugly.
A muscle ticked in his jaw. Slow. Controlled.
He stepped into my space, close enough that the air shifted, close enough that I could feel the heat rolling off him and smell the faint scent of coffee on his breath.
"You should," he murmured, eyes focused on my lips.

Xavier has one rule: survive.
After being betrayed and left for dead by his own pack, he doesn't trust Alphas. He doesn't trust loyalty. And he sure as fuck doesn't trust powerful families who smile too easily.
Aaron D'Amico is everything Xavier avoids - a strategic, dangerously composed Alpha raised in legacy and control. His pack is strong. His leadership is unquestioned. And his mother's influence runs deeper than anyone realizes, even him. He doesn't make reckless decisions. He doesn't let emotions interfere. And he doesn't lose control.
Until Xavier.
What starts as irritation turns into a battle of dominance neither of them expected. But beneath the tension simmers something more dangerous - quiet political maneuvering, shifting loyalties, and a matriarch who watches every move.
Because in this pack, power isn't taken with claws.
It's taken with strategy.
And the Alpha who prides himself on discipline?
He's about to meet the one wolf who refuses to behave.

In the original series, a prefix is really part of your cat's history or environment. 'Bramble-' suggests a thicket where they were born, 'Heather-' for the moors. That's the first layer. Then, the suffix is what they earned. A -'claw' could be a hunter, a -'pelt' just means they're good at camouflage, nothing flashy. I think people get caught up on making it sound cool and forget that in the clans, names are functional. My favorite from the books is probably 'Whitestorm'. It's simple—white pelt, but with the force of a storm in battle. It doesn't need to be overly complex to tell you exactly who he is.
I always lean towards suffixes like -'heart' or -'foot' for cats whose greatest strength is loyalty or endurance, not just fighting. 'Longtail' is a great example; his name literally describes him, and his skill was his keen sight and patience. It's not about being the fiercest, it's about what you contribute to the clan. I'd avoid made-up suffixes that aren't in the books, like -'blade' or -'fang'; it breaks the internal logic for me. Stick to what feels found in the forest.
Calico she-cats are some of the most visually striking characters in the 'Warrior Cats' series, and their names should reflect their vibrant, patchwork fur. Names like 'Patchcloud' or 'Dapplesun' capture their mottled coats while hinting at their personalities—maybe a bit dreamy or radiant. I also love 'Emberflame' for a fiery, spirited calico, or 'Briarspotted' for one with a thorny, independent streak. The prefix can play off their colors—'Goldenspots,' 'Russetstripe,' or even 'Mossfleck' for a more earthy vibe.
Then there’s the suffix, which can reveal their role or temperament. A wise elder might be 'Dapplewhisper,' while a swift hunter could be 'Patchleap.' I’ve always thought 'Flameheart' would suit a bold leader, her patches like flickering fires. And for a gentle healer? 'Sunshadow,' balancing light and dark, just like her coat. The possibilities are endless, but the key is blending their looks with their spirit—something the series does so well.
