She felt like she'd been destroyed, like her heart had been ripped out of her chest. Aria's tears slowed, replaced by a deep sadness. "What about the connection we felt when we first met?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Ryker laughed. "Wait, you must be joking," he said, his eyes mocking. "You really thought I wanted you to be my mate?" Aria's face fell, her eyes widening in shock.

The thought of her ending up like the others terrified me. I never wanted that. But now, with the scent drawing closer, something shifted. Excitement stirred low in my chest at the thought of meeting my mate for the first time. She would be perfect. Refined. Powerful. Different from the others. Well-fitting. Like the current Lycan Queen. Regal. Graceful. I began to search in earnest. --- And then her scent hit me. Sweet. Strong. Mine.
