For twenty years, I had been taught that the devil walked the earth as an ugly, deceptive spirit, but looking at him, I realized the church had lied. The devil was beautiful. He was sitting right in front of me, wrapped in a bespoke black suit, exuding an authority that made the massive parlor feel incredibly small.

It is a part of human nature. In my eyes, a person who commits evil acts is the devil himself. There is no outside force, no mysterious entity whispering in their ears, no dark power forcing their hand. The devil is simply the name we give to the worst parts of human nature— the greed, the cruelty, the hunger for control, and the willingness to destroy others for selfish gain. It is not some mystical being hiding in the darkness. It is us. It is me. And if that is the case, then I must be the devil.
