Three days after Callum left Dunmore, the Sheridan family was all over the news. It started with the television interview that never aired. Someone found it strange that the top scorer in the entire state had disappeared and her own family had no idea where she had gone. Then, the neighbors from the apartment complex spoke up. One of them told reporters that a young girl had lived there alone for a full year. Her air conditioner was broken and nobody came to fix it. When the power went out at night, she could only crouch in the hallway and cry.

I snarled, "It's not your place to run your mouth. Get out of my house!" Melissa took Nicolas' hand, a reproachful frown creasing her brow. "If you'd apologized to Nicky, I might have helped you for old times' sake. But it's clear you haven't learned a thing. Then take this as your lesson." The door slammed, echoing through the house. I looked at the wedding decorations we'd put up around the house, and a bleak chill crept in. Human hearts were fickle. Whatever love Melissa once had for me had vanished in a heartbeat.

Clutching my hand, tears streamed down his face as he pleaded, "Darling, don't let go! I beg you, I don't want to die!" I could not help but laugh at his pitiful state. "Fess up. Were you trying to kill me?" Brandon would not confess, shaking his head frantically. "No, my love! You have my word, I had no intention of killing you. It was all a joke!"

The remaining love I had for him vanished instantly. “How did you…?” Joseph looked at me in disbelief as he panicked. “How did I learn about it? Hmph!” I watched him quietly and laughed as I feigned indifference. Even so, I ended up crying. I exhausted myself to push him away and sobbed. “You guys got together on our ninth anniversary. On our tenth anniversary, you guys made love in the next room. Joseph, I’m not heartless. If you don’t love me, I won’t force you to either. Why did you have to humiliate me like that?!”

he said coldly. My breath caught in my throat. "Is it about me then…?" I couldn't restrain my dry chuckle. "Am I not your type, or simply not good enough?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. He cursed and dragged his fingers through his hair. "It's nothing personal. I just…" He trailed off and swallowed. "Let's say that it would have come drastically in the way of my revenge." And yet he used the word "never," referring to loving me. I sealed my lips. I didn't want to continue this conversation, afraid that it would make me feel even more pathetic.
