“Damn you, Killian… for leaving me alone,” she whispered.
The words barely left her lips, but the ache inside her flared with them.
“I don’t know how you managed to stay so calm in situations like this. It’s so fucking hard to be at the front and still care about saving everyone else…”
She leaned back against the wall, beer still untouched.
A few minutes later, the familiar scent reached her before he did. Rome sat down beside her without asking.
“Cursing Killian?” he asked with a low chuckle. “I miss that bastard today.”
Vespara didn’t look at him. “If he were here, I wouldn’t have to deal with your obnoxious ass. He was enough to keep you in line.” She let out a bitter breath. “I hate that he left me to deal with you alone. I wish… I wish I had died in his place.”
Rome reached out, his touch surprisingly gentle as he placed a finger over her lips.
“Don’t speak nonsense, arch enemy,” he said quietly. “If you died… who the hell would I fight with?”
