The ride home was long and mostly quiet. I sat in the front passenger seat beside Vera as she drove, her hands gripping the steering wheel just a little too tightly. Her eyes stared ahead, but I could tell her mind was somewhere else. The way her fingers tapped now and then on the wheel, the way she sighed quietly, it was all too telling.
“Have you been able to reach Mr. Anthony?” I asked, breaking the silence.
She glanced at me briefly before focusing back on the road. “No. I tried calling him before, but the line didn’t go through. After that, I just decided to let it go.”
I hesitated for a second before speaking. “Eric called.”
Her head turned slightly toward me again, curiosity flashing in her eyes. “What did he say?”
“He finalized the investigation… and found out it was really Mr. Anthony behind everything,” I said quietly, my voice thick with disappointment.
Vera bit her lower lip, eyes back on the road. “If he did all that… I hope it was worth it to him. I really t
