I sit next to Max as he drives us to family day. He seems excited for me to leave. I guess he really wants a divorce.
As we park, I tell him, “You can just drop me off if you want. I can tell everyone you had a work emergency.”
“No, I promised you that I would attend family days. They are starting to grow on me,” Max replies. Seeing my face his smile drops, “Do you want me to stop coming?”
“It’s fine. Let’s just go in or we will be late,” I respond. I don’t want to be around Max. Since I told him about the trip all he talks about is me leaving.
We go inside. I’m relieved my mother isn’t here. I go play with Kelsey and Kaylee while we wait for my dad to be brought out into the main hall. Once he comes out, we do the game the staff has planned.
I sit at a table with my dad and Max. While talking Max takes my hand. I quickly find an excuse to leave the table and pull away from Max.
When we get back into the car, Max asked, “Why did you not want me there?”
