Chapter: Meeting Nora
Treyah told me the dancers were not welcoming me. Though I understood, I’m a little hurt. I’m not sure how to befriend the huldrea. I decided to dance and stretch in the mornings, it seems to help clear my mind.Taran caught me dancing on his last visit. To my surprise, he didn’t laugh at me. Instead, he taught me the dances from his time. We spent the day dancing and making love in the forest. I can’t explain how, but Taran seemed different this visit. Maybe it’s because I told him that I didn’t want my memories back. Maybe it’s because he felt less guilty about leaving me here since I finally understood this is where I need to be.I took him to the cave and told him about what I saw. The monsters I faced, my decision to stay, everything. He simply listened, asking questions here and there, but he listened. I know he wasn’t happy about me seeing Bryan, but he knew that I needed to close that chapter. I didn’t realize how much it weighed me down.We spent the night in the cave. Taran

Chapter: Taran's update
TaranI kiss Tru’s forehead and hold her hands, “You are doing so well, little dove.”“Every time you leave me, it’s as hard as the first,” Tru whispers. “When can I come home? Years?”“It isn’t that simple, sweet dove.” I try to explain. I don’t know what to say to her. I don’t know how to comfort her. The truth is that I have no idea how long she should stay. Henry’s, Jonat’s, Dawy’s, and Gilleandaris’s trails seem to drag. I have to follow the rules now. It is making everything take longer. If I had a few more months, I could’ve killed them without stirring any controversy. No one would’ve suspected me. Then Tru could’ve remembered us and come to me. I would have blamed everything on Bryan and told her that I had gone into her dreams, hoping to find her. Now I have to play this careful game. Tru won’t be happy with me once she realizes I took her memory and allowed the stone to curse her. It was the only way to keep her hidden. Tru wouldn’t have stayed back and allowed me the chanc

Chapter: Tru's first trial
I arrive at the mountain just as the sun starts to set. The darkness of the cave terrifies me. Pulling out the light crystal, I entered the cave. The darkness seems to swallow the light because I still cannot see in front of my face. The darkness seems to pulse. All the light from the crystal appears to be absorbed. The deeper I go into the cave, the dimmer the crystal becomes. It isn’t long before it stops illuminating.Keeping my hand in front of me to find the side of the cave, I feel nothing as I walk. I even tried to step to the side, trying to find the cave wall, but it seemed to open into a spacious area. Or perhaps I’m so disoriented that I am walking in a circle.I see a dim light in front of me and begin walking towards it. The light is a fire. Why is there a fire in the middle of a cave? Who built the fire?Something is vibrating in my pocket. Reaching in, I pull out the lighting crystal. It is glowing red instead of its typical white. “What’s wrong?” I whisper.“Well, well

Chapter: Nothing is simple
Treyah left me as we reached the border of Arraya's land. I’m lonely here. All I have is Willow and Treyah. At night for meals I feel isolated. It feels odd to admit, but I’m so lonely, I miss Bryan’s pack. I miss having people smile and wave at me. I miss idle conversation. I make it to Arraya’s altar. Before I can ask to approach, I hear her voice, “Hurry up, girl. I’ve been waiting for my turn.”“I was told that it is customary to ask before approaching,” I tease.“You are invited indefinitely. There is no need for you to ask. I personally blessed you.” Arraya says with amusement. I approach her altar. “Sit.”I sit on the altar. Teasingly, I say, “There isn’t a blood moon tonight, right?”“No. You are safe tonight. The fey will not come here.”“Why not? Do they not have free rein over the island?” I asked.“There is nothing to fuck here. Only Nora and Willow have children.” Arraya almost sounds sad.“What’s in Nora’s domain?” I questioned. I’ve not traveled into her territory yet.“

Chapter: I have to excersize
The weeks seem to pass slowly. Taran visits once every seventh day. He never steps into my hut. Something about it bothers me. We always sleep under the stars on a grass plain. When he arrives, I always show him my progress. Though meditating has still been a challenge, I’ve learned to grow plants and help flowers bloom. He never mentions me coming home, even when I ask.Today, after breakfast, I saw Willow. “We are going to do something different today.” She says with a hint of excitement. “I want to work on your stamina. You are going to do five laps around this meadow. Then I want you to visit Arraya. You will stay with her tonight.”“Should I take a bag?” I asked.“If you want.” Willow replies. “But you cannot come here tonight. The high fey are coming, and I do not want you around them. They have a tendency to be handsy. The dragon king will not take kindly to a fey male attempting to woe you.”I laugh, “Why are they coming tonight?”“It is the in-between of summer and fall. A me

Chapter: Until the end of time
My nails dig into Taran’s back as I feel him inside me. My legs are wrapped around him as he presses me against a rock. The river Taran mentioned empties into a large pool. We decided to bathe there until one thing led to another and I ended up pinned against a boulder. Taran finishes with a low groan while I scream out in pleasure. We share an intimate kiss before he presses his forehead to mine as we try to catch our breath. “Don’t pull out yet,” I whisper as Taran starts to pull away.“I wasn’t. I was just going to grab you.” he replies with a grin. Taran wraps his arms around me waist and pulls me away from the rock. “When this war ends and you are home with me, we are spending days in our bed.”I smile, “We spent four months alone on an island together. Was that not enough for you?”“A millennium with you isn’t enough.” Taran gently says, “No amount of time will be enough.”Touching his cheek, I softly say, “Taran, I-“That is enough. You two had your fun. Mother is waiting.” Tre

Chapter: Epilogue
EpilogueFour Years Later“Wyatt and Maverick, Nana is here.” I heard little feet running down the hall while I finished fastening Amelia into her car seat. “I think I packed her enough milk for the weekend.”“She will be fine, Mel; I am excited to have my granddaughter for the first time. It’s your fifth anniversary, go out, and have fun. They will be fine; if anything happens, I will call.”Little voice screamed, “Nana!” and wrapped their arms around Vanessa's legs. Wyatt looked up at me. He is now four, and I don’t know where the time has gone. “Is Millie coming with us this time?” He was protective of his little sister. Amelia just turned ten months and had both of her brothers, as well as her father, wrapped around her little finger. All she needed was to make a noise, and one of th

Chapter: 'Til Death
Wyatt is now eight weeks old. Owen has come by every day to see him. He loves being a father. I am not ready to be without Wyatt for long, but having Owen around is a big help. Yesterday he took Wyatt out for a walk in his stroller, so I could get some work done. Owen has also brought food when he comes over, which is often. I am not sure if he cooks it or Vanessa does, but it’s always delicious. He will plate our food then wait for me to finish with Wyatt and eat with him. Owen has also spent the night a few times so I could get a full night’s sleep. He sleeps on the couch or the floor in Wyatt’s room, so he doesn’t disturb me. That is until last night:FlashbackI quietly left Wyatt’s room. He was defiantly a little man, fell right to sleep after eating. Owen was cooking something in the kitchen that filled the air with a mouth-watering scent. “What are you making?&

Chapter: What should we name him?
OwenIn the last few weeks, I have watched Mel at the university. I worry about her, the campus is quiet, and with her being pregnant, I have concerns. Every day she goes to lunch with a man. He’s tall, over six foot with dark hair and tan skin. He laughs at Mel’s jokes, and she laughs at his. The day I decided to go and talk to her was the first day I saw her eating lunch with him. After that day, they seemed to be together a lot. With the way they interact, I am afraid they are more than friends. I should be happy she isn’t alone. I typically bring my laptop to do work, and at night my mother and I take a course to become doulas. It was something I didn’t want to do at first, but when mom told me about how it would impress Mel, I caved. It is Mel’s last day of giving finals. The finals should end around f

Chapter: Here he comes
It’s been a month since the incident with Andrea and Jennifer. Owen texts me at least once a week asking me how I’m feeling and if I need anything. I haven’t gotten to see him in person since, but he is at least staying in touch.Since the beginning of the summer semester a couple of weeks ago, I have gotten close to a work colleague named Evan. Dr. Harris asked me if I wanted to make extra money over the summer by teaching a course, and I jumped at the chance. The class would end two weeks before my due date, so I felt confident that nothing would interfere with teaching.Evan also recently completed his Ph.D. in humanities. Since the university staff as few people as possible during the summer he and I met in the café during lunch. I was getting food, specifically, chocolate pudding, when one of the fitness instructors asked me, “Are you going to feed your baby that?” shocked a

Chapter: Farewell Alpha
I brought Owen to the back entrance of the club, he got out and grabbed a spare key from inside a fake rock. Unlocking the door, he ushered me inside. We walked into his office, “Sit on the couch, and I will go grab the first aid kit.” I turned and left before he could argue. Going up to his apartment, I grabbed the first aid kit from inside the master bathroom. Opening it quickly, I checked the kit for gauze, tape, and disinfectant spray. Finding everything in place, I shut the kit and went back downstairs. “Okay, can you either lean forward or lay on your stomach?”“What would be easiest for you?” Owen’s eyes traveled to my stomach. “Are you okay?” His eyes went back up to meet mine.“I just need you in a position so I can get at the cut. I need to clean it and find out how deep it is.” The look in his eyes told me that his worry is far greater than

Chapter: Betrayal
OwenI spent today training the younger kids self-defense. When I finally got back to the packhouse, it was well after nine. I should have let the kids go home earlier, as I am sure for some, it was past their bedtime. I walked into my office, Jennifer came by as soon as I sat down, and I asked if I needed anything. She wanted to go out with some friends; I didn’t care what she did, so I told her to go.My mother called a few minutes later. I left my cell in my office while training. “Hey, mom.”“Owen, darling. What time are you meeting, Mel?”“What? Meeting Mel? We didn’t have plans to meet.” I said in a confused voice.“Mel thinks she is meeting you. She figured out you were behind everything and wanted to talk with you.” My mother stated.

Chapter: Chapter 105
Max and I pull up to the estate. There is a large gate. Max hits a button, and the gate slowly opens. “When we hire security, there will be someone to man the gate in the guard shack.”“Do you think we need all of that?” I asked.Max shifts uncomfortably, “I never understood why my dad changed so much after my mom and sister died. He never remarried or even dated anyone. I always wondered why he became so detached from the world. Then you were threatened, and I couldn’t imagine living my life without you in the world.”We drive through the gate. “That’s why you didn’t care if I was angry about you meeting Candice.”“I didn’t want you to be angry. I want you to be happy. But that is a want. What I need is for you to be alive and safe, even if it isn’t with me. Just knowing you are in the world, knowing someone like you exists, is enough.” Max’s words cause a warmth to spread through me. I place my hand on his leg. Max puts his hand on top of mine.I find myself staring at him. How did

MaxEllie picked up her nieces from school today and everyday the past two weeks.. She has left a couple hours early at work, but she makes them up by coming in early. Ellie makes them dinner, helps with sight words, and gives them a bath. James picks them up when he gets off work. Tonight after Kelsey and Kaylee leave, I sit down on the couch and wait for Ellie. She took Kelsey and Kaylee downstairs to meet James. When Ellie arrives back upstairs, I notice how exhausted she look. “El, are you alright?” I asked as she sits next to me. She nods, but doesn’t say anything. I pull her into my lap. She willingly lays against me with her head on my chest.“Candice was with James. He said he was just giving her a ride home from work, but that is why he didn’t come to the door.” Ellie’s voice is small as she speaks. “She didn’t speak to me though. I just hugged the twins, told them goodbye and came back. But just seeing her is emotionally draining.”“I’m throwing her in jail. She shouldn’t ha

What would you do?”Max has a slight smile, “I don’t know. My mom abandoned me because she died.”I laugh, “Your humor is so dark.”“Do you want me to read it first?” he asked as we pull into the car park. We get out the car, “Like you did with my results. I can read them and tell you if there is anything important or throw it away. That way you don’t need to worry about what she says.”“That’s not a bad idea,” I say while taking his hand.Max squeezes my hand. “She violated the restraining order, I can have her arrested if you want.”“No, it’s over. It is early on a Saturday morning, Max and I are laying in bed when his phone buzzes. He groggily checks it. He quickly sits up. Seeing his reaction, I sit up too. “What’s wrong?” I asked.“My results are in,” he says softly. “I just got the notification my file was updated.”“What are the results?” I asked. I can see Max’s hand shaking. “Do you want me to look?” I slowly take the phone from Max.As I open the tab, he stops me. “What if it didn’t work?” Max questioned, his voice full of uncertainty.“Then you won’t need to wear a condom anymore,” I tell him. “Whatever happens, we are in this together.”Max nods. I open the results and read them. His count is above 15 million per milliliter. I look at Max, “You have to keep wearing condoms.”Max lets out a shaky breath and grabs his phone. He looks at me with a huge smile, “Thank you. If you weren’t here to take such good care of me…”“Max, you followed the doctor’s orders. It had nothing to do with me.”“You bathed me, kept up with my

MaxSince the gala last week Ellie has been distant. Though I wouldn’t say she is being cold, our interactions feel surface level. She rarely says more than a sentence or two. We still sleep in the same bed, she cuddles and kisses me like nothing happened, yet when I try to talk with her it doesn’t feel like I’m talking to my Ellie. When I get home from work Ellie is cooking dinner, “How was your day, Max?” I go to grab her for a kiss, but she steps away, “The food is almost ready if you want to change.”“How long will it be like this?” I asked.“Like what?” Ellie replied, not even sparing me a glance. She just mixes the food.“You’re avoiding me.”Ellie still hasn’t looked at me, “I need to pay attention so I don’t burn the food.”“You have avoided me since the gala. You’re distant, you reject all my advances. Yet when I ask why you’re upset, I’m met with, “I’m fine.” Tell me what I did.”“I’m not mad,” she responds while plating our food. Max and I are attending a gala tonight. My dress is red and gold to match the accent pieces of Max’s tux. Kendra did my hair and makeup. Max walks in as I finish getting ready. “Kitten,” he says softly. Max removes the gold necklace I’m wearing and replaces it with his mother’s necklace. “She would love you.”“Are you sure?” I asked.“I picked red for a reason.” Max shows me his ruby cufflinks, “I want to match.”I stand. Max’s eyes rake over the form-fitting dress. “Is it too much?”“No. You look stunning. Thank goodness they aren’t doing an auction this year, or I would go bankrupt.”I shrug, “You could let someone else win.”“Never,” he growls. “You’re mine, kitten.”I smile. “Will anyone say something about the necklace?”Max scoffs, “Who cares? I don’t have a good reputation anyway. Let them talk. Neither of us did anything wrong.”“I paid Kendra for the necklace. Technically, I bought it.”Max shrugs, “Your business partner bought it for you as a gift. You paying her for it means
