"Am I interrupting anything interesting? This place looks quiet. Why do I have a feeling that you all suddenly stopped talking because I walked in? Are you all discussing me? I might just walk away if my presence is making you all uncomfortable." Kelly asked with seriousness.
The sudden silence in the room worries him so much. He could have sworn that he heard some voices when he was still outside.
"Kelly, please stop. Stop drawing unnecessary conclusions. It doesn't even make sense to me. This has nothing to do with you. Why do you think everything is always about you, huh? The least you could have done was to ask. This is not the way to go about this." George fumed at Kelly. Not even the news of Dexter's arrest made him react that way. He poured out his frustration at Kelly as he was the one who got Dexter arrested.
"Okay. I guess it's not about me after all. At least, I know I am safe,' Kelly sighed.
Another awkward glance from George fueled another suspicion.
"What? Stop staring at me like that, I ooze. Can someone please tell me what's going on? I am beginning to lose it. Well, you wouldn't blame me for being too desperate to get answers. The atmosphere around called for it. I'm pretty certain you would do worse if you were in my shoes." Kelly ranted. He might have giant trust in George, but with the situation on the ground, he is starting to have a second thought.
"Should I tell him myself since no one is ready to speak up? Curiosity is already scrubbing his face in the mud," Nurse Olivia volunteered herself to break the silence.
She had thought that George was going to react badly to the arrest of his son. To her greatest surprise, he didn't even act as if he were related to Dexter. Let alone, his son.
From her observation, Kelly has shown so much concern despite not being told about Dexter's arrest yet. She has a feeling that Kelly might make a difference and do what George couldn't even attempt.
"Suit yourself, Olivia. I don't care how you go about it. You can even get a megaphone and tell the whole world. I don't give a fuck. I don't think I am ready to have this conversation., let alone get myself involved." George consented to grant Olivia's request. His actions show that he had completely exempted himself from Dexter's case. It was only a matter of time before he made it official.
"Dexter just got arrested for assaulting one of the nurses. The policeman who got Dexter arrested is the boyfriend of the nurse that Dexter assaulted," Olivia explained in detail.
She utilized the opportunity to dwell on the situation extensively after being denied the first time.
"This can't be true, Please tell me you're joking," Kelly doubted Nurse Olivia even after the in-depth explanation.
"This is no joke, sir.
If you're doubting me, you can ask the father. I already told him before you arrived," Olivia affirmed. She was starting to lose faith in Kelly, too. The same way she did with George.
She knew for sure that Dexter was a jerk and a problem child that no one wanted to associate themselves with. But not to the point of abandoning him when it matters most.
"George, is it true?
Is that Nurse telling the truth? Please - look me in the eyes and tell me what I need to know," Kelly beckoned on George to satisfy his curiosity. He still didn't know what to believe anymore.
"There's nothing to talk about, Kelly. The nurse already said it all," George reluctantly answered.
His nonchalance was been becoming a serious concern for Kelly. Kelly doesn't know George to be that cruel, even to his son.
"And what did you do about it? Have you bothered to find out the station Dexter was talking to?" Kelly asked with utmost concern.
Kelly's attitude got Olivia excited about confused at the same time. At that point, she would believe that Kelly is the biological father to Dexter and not George.
"Kelly, go home and rest. You've been with me for over 24 hours now. I want to assume that you must be exhausted, aren't you?" George digressed from the actual discourse. He would rather not hear anything that has to do with Dexter.
If he had the opportunity, he would pay to lose his hearing ability just to ensure that Dexter becomes a thing of the past.
"Are you kicking me out now, George? Is this one of your silly tricks?" Kelly wept. The way he acted, it would be difficult to tell that Dexter never liked him in the first place.
"Kick you out?
No, dear friend. You surely need a rest, and I'm granting you that favor. Is this how you chose to repay me?" George laughed.
He was making fun of the situation while Kelly was there worrying his head over someone who didn't even give a fuck about him.
"I guess your daughter misses you too. If she wasn't missing you at home, she wouldn't have called you a couple of minutes ago. What sign do you need to have before you understand that you have got to be home?" George added after the brief silence.
Kelly was too weak to speak. With no one to run to, he turned to Doctor Escobar to seek a solution. "Can you please help me here? George is becoming a hard nut to crack,"
"I would rather not discuss this. We just have to allow the father to make the final decision. Only he knows what's best for his family," Escobar answered as he took sides with George.
Kelly was stunned.
If he wasn't there, he would have said that Escobar was paid by George to take sides with him.
"Even you?" Kelly roared.
Whose side are you on? Where's your conscience? Have you suddenly lost your human sympathy?" Kelly continued to lament. He took the situation personally as though Dexter were his son.
