Zahra's POV

“Oh my goddess, he really likes you, Zahra!” Abby practically squeals.

Could she be any more obvious?!

“Shush, he can hear you,” I whisper, punching her in the arm.

“Ouch!”

“He does not like me; he only came over to be polite.”

“Girl, you are blind. Did you not see his face when we said we wouldn’t go over there?” Sienna rolls her eyes, talking around another mouthful of her burger.

“That’s not what that was. He just felt bad for interrupting us.”

“Keep telling yourself that, but he was disappointed we turned him down.”

“Shut up, they can probably still hear you. Let’s just eat our meal. This is meant to be our birthday bonding, remember?”

I roll my eyes at both of them, and they giggle. Thankfully, Sebastian’s table is all talking animatedly to each other. I pray to the moon goddess that they’re too loud to hear my friends and their sudden loss of tact

Just then, I notice Daphne, Abby’s mom, walking over. I smile at her, and I’m rewarded with a huge warm hug.

I swear this woman’s warmth could melt an igloo.

“There she is! Happy 14th, my sweet girl!”

Over her back, I see Sebastian straighten and look at us. I try to avoid getting lost in his gorgeous face and focus back on Abby’s mom.

“Thank you so much, Daph. Your heavenly burgers are working their birthday magic as usual.” She pulls away and pats Abby and Sienna on the shoulders.

“And how are you, Sienna?”

“I’m great, thanks, Mrs. Winter.”

“Oh, don’t be silly. You know you can call me Daphne, Sienna. You’ve been friends with these two long enough to drop the formalities.”

Grinning, Sienna said, “Okay then, Daphne. Thanks.”

“Well, I just popped out for a birthday hug. I better get back to the kitchen. I’ll see you girls soon. Abby, love, see you at home.”

With that, she headed back to the kitchen behind the counter of the diner.

We finished our burgers while chatting about school and roundly abusing the high-heeled hyenas. I glance down at my watch, it’s already after 7:00pm, and I need to be getting home.

“I need to head out if I’m going to get back before my dad and avoid trouble.”

Both girl’s frown. They know about my home life, mostly. They know my dad ignores me and thinks I’m a waste of space. It’s hard to explain the hours I keep and the lack of any kind of wardrobe without explaining about him.

“Try not to let him ruin the rest of your night, Z?” Sienna says, glancing at Abby.

“I won’t. I’ll sneak in my window if he’s home already and ignore him. He’s never interested in me normally, and today he probably went to the cemetery after work anyway. I’d just rather avoid his dissatisfied stare today of all days.”

I give the girls each a hug and grab my bag. As I walk past, I give Sebastian a small smile and wave, but I manage to slip out without having to face him again. He looks like he wants to talk, but his friends have him pinned down. Lucky escape for me. I start the walk home through town, the summer evening air doing little to lift the weight of dread on my shoulders

When I get to the Beta house, it’s pitch black. Of course, my brother is probably over at the Alpha house. I can hear music and voices drifting from their backyard. I head around to the kitchen door, careful not to wake my dad if he’s passed out in the living room. Climbing up the porch steps, I feel like a thief sneaking into my own home.

As I open the door to the dark kitchen, I’m greeted by the stench of alcohol. Great, just what I need. I barely have time to brace myself before my dad lurches out of the shadows, his eyes bloodshot and full of hate.

“You,” he slurs, spitting venom with every word. “You killed her. The love of my life. My mate. And for what? For you to stand there, looking like the useless runt you are.”

I try to back away, but he’s on me in an instant. His words cut deep, but the fist to my face cuts deeper. Pain explodes through me as he starts beating and kicking, his insults blending into a horrific symphony of abuse.

“You’re worthless,” he snarls, picking up something from the side I hadn’t noticed. Oh, Goddess, it’s a whip, but it’s got multiple strands, each with silver beads knotted at regular intervals and a hooked silver claw at the end. It’s a cat-o’-nine-tails, something that looks like it’s meant for prisoners. Then I smell it—wolfsbane. It must be soaked in it. Shit, this is bad.

“I wish it was you who died instead of her. I wish you were dead. You’re the bane of my life, a useless spare child I didn’t even want, and a girl. You keep showing your brother and me up. You’re nothing but trouble. And now I’m going to teach you what we do with troublemakers.”

He raises his arm, and the Cat whistles through the air. I hear the crack before I feel the pain. It burns across my back, pulling a scream from my mouth.

Each strike feels like fire on my skin. I scream so loud my voice gives out, and soon after, I faint from the pain. When I come around, I don’t know how much time has passed, but I realize I’m being dragged by my foot out of the kitchen. He drags me outside, stumbling through the woods until the sound of the party up the street fades completely.

He dumps me there, bleeding and broken. I can barely see through my swollen eyes, and the blood from my back seeps into the ground. I lie there, feeling life slipping away, hoping this is finally the end. As darkness closes in around me, I hear my name whispered in the back of my mind. Then I lose consciousness. I hope it’s for the last time. What’s the point of living if this is how my father treats me? Maybe in my next life, my family will love me.

  • Scarred by fate    Chapter 153

Zach's POVMy insides feel like they’re melting. My sister. My little, 14-year-old sister, just announced she’s graduating this summer. In six weeks. What the actual fuck? How can my baby sister be finishing school a full year before me?The crackling fire is the only sound around the circle. Zahra is staring down at her shoes, and the rest of us are just gawking at her, wide-eyed and open-mouthed.The hot, prickling sensation in my stomach spreads, crawling up my back and neck. I can’t think straight. My emotions are tangled and burning, and before I know it, I’m on my feet, pacing the small space in the middle of the logs.“What?!” It’s all I can manage.“What do you mean, Little Bit?” Oscar croaks out, his voice just as stunned as I feel.Zahra looks up briefly, then back at her shoes. “Well… I’m graduating at the end of the semester. Finals start in two weeks,” she says softly. Her eyes meet mine as I pace. There’s an almost apologetic look in them, but it just fuels the storm ins

Tobias's POVEventually, Xander gets a mind-link from his mum, calling us down to dinner. The group starts to make their way downstairs, the usual chatter and noise filling the air. As we stand, I see Sebastian step toward Zahra, his hand reaching for her arm. She pulls away sharply, and while I cannot hear what she says over the chatter, her expression leaves no doubt that she is far from pleased.I step forward, offering my arm to her. “Zahra, will you allow me to escort you to dinner?”She glances at me, a relieved smile lighting up her face. “Thank you, Prince Tobias, that would be very welcome.”I scowl playfully at her. “Tobias,” I correct. She giggles softly, her eyes sparkling. “Sorry. Thank you, Tobias.”“That’s better.” She rests her hand on my forearm, and together we head toward the staircase.Sebastian does not follow immediately, and for a brief moment, we are alone as we descend. Dropping my voice so only she can hear, I ask, “Are you all right, little one?”She looks u

  • Scarred by fate    Chapter 151

Tobias's POVI don’t know why I’m at all surprised, but Zanthe is incredible. I’ve heard the legends of white wolves all my life, their grace, their power, their rarity. But actually, seeing one in the flesh... it’s impossible to put into words. Her fur is breath taking, an almost silvery white that shimmers in the sunlight. And her size; goddess, she’s massive. Regal. Perfect.I can’t believe that was her first time sparring in wolf form. She moved like a seasoned warrior, every motion precise and instinctual. It was mesmerizing.‘She’s magnificent,’ Thor rumbles in my mind, his deep voice practically purring with pride. In that moment, all I wanted was to go to her, to pull her into my arms and tell her everything. About the bond, about us. I wanted her to know that she was mine—mine to protect, mine to cherish, mine to love. But I couldn’t. Not yet. The weight of that secret is suffocating, but revealing it too soon would only add to the pressure she’s already carrying. As I watch

  • Scarred by fate    Chapter 150

Zahra's POVWhat the actual fuck?! Yetanotherthing to be worried about—more differences, more reasons I’m a total freak. Just as I was starting to relax and enjoy myself, the Alpha King drops this bombshell: I have to stay hidden because there’s a cult out there who might want to hunt me down and kill me. Oh, and let’s not forget the cherry on top—some psycho alphas might also try to kidnap me and force me into a mate bond. Fantastic. Can’t I, for once, just live a normal life?Walking to training surrounded by the others, my mind won’t stop spinning. Every little thought seems to dredge up something worse, and suddenly, the image from my dream comes roaring back. That thing, thatpresencefrom the dream. I guess being hunted isn’t a new concept for me after all.

  • Scarred by fate    Chapter 149

Lucas's POVBy the time we make it back to my office, I glance at the clock on the wall and note that training is starting soon. Zahra will need time to change and get ready. Everyone files into the office, but with too many bodies and not enough chairs, I grab Ali by the waist and pull her onto my lap. Her cheeks flush, and I can feel her squirm slightly, embarrassed, but I grin at her and hold her there. Greg, Tobias, and Nicholas remain standing, leaving Zahra and James to take the chairs in front of my desk. I haven’t called Austin in—I know he’s busy setting up for training. Besides, he hasn’t seen Zanthe yet, and I’m not even sure if he knows she’s a white wolf.“Right, James,” I begin, keeping my tone calm but direct. “What’s this all about?”James turns to Zahra, and I notice her fidgeting in her seat, her anxiet

  • Scarred by fate    Chapter 148

Lucas's POV“What’s going on here then?” James asks, his tone light, but his curiosity evident.I glance at Zahra, silently asking for permission. This is her secret to share.“Tobias already knows,” she says quietly, her voice steady but soft. The surprise must show on my face because I turn to the prince. The way Zahra skips his title doesn’t escape me, nor him, judging by the wide grin stretching across his face.“Are you and Zanthe training?” Tobias asks her, his voice low and careful, his eyes locked on hers. Zahra blushes and nods, biting her lip as she glances at the ground.Nicholas’s head jerks back and forth between the two of them so quickly I half-expect it to spin off, while James looks outright baffled.“Who’s
