Cain wasn’t home. Carter suggested staying with me, but I told him I’d be fine and that it was probably best if Cain didn’t come home to the sight of us together. I asked around to see if anyone knew where he was, but no one did. So I went into our bedroom and sat by the window, gazing outside. I waited there for what felt like ages. The sun disappeared, and the moon emerged, casting a soft glow into the room. Only a small light by the bed was turned on, preventing the darkness from swallowing me completely.
As I began to doze off, a sudden noise jolted me awake. It sounded like a crash, and I quickly sat up, scanning the room. I focused on the door, just in time to hear another bang, as if something had hit it. Standing up, I walked over and opened the door, only to find Cain leaning against it. As I opened it, he slid down to the floor and looked up at me.
“Cain?”
He opened his eyes wider and grinned at me. “Oh, there’s my lovely mate!” he slurred, making me roll my eyes.
