Chapter 3

Author: Lemonade
It wasn't because Tyler was worried and messaged me.

It was because, in celebration of Vivian's birthday, he had set off silver-blue fireworks at the Moonlight Festival that could be seen across Centrum City. It had even made it to the front page of the Werewolf World Council Gazette.

I didn't return home until early in the morning. The lights were on in the living room, and Tyler was fast asleep on the couch.

Was he waiting for me?

In the five years we had been together, he had always come home completely drunk. I had always feared he might get into an accident while drunk, so I would call him countless times. I would also worry that too much drinking would affect his health, so I always prepared a hangover cure in advance.

Tyler had told me countless times that he didn't like me doing these things, his reasoning being that it made him feel like he was getting old.

Perhaps he heard the sound of me opening the door, but as I felt my thoughts drift away, he suddenly opened his eyes. The moment he saw me, he leapt up and rushed over, pulling me into a tight hug.

"Where did you go? Why didn't you answer me? Did you know I already called the cops?" he questioned anxiously.

I froze for a moment, then pulled away from his embrace. "My phone froze and broke that snowy day when I was waiting for you, so I didn't get your call."

Upon hearing me mention the snow, Tyler seemed to recall what had happened that day too, and a rare trace of guilt flickered in his usually sharp gaze. He pursed his lips before awkwardly pulling out a wolf fang-shaped jewelry box and handing it to me.

I took it instinctively and opened it, only to see a moonstone engagement ring inside.

I suddenly froze. Once upon a time, I had imagined it countless times—on a moonlit night, Tyler would appear at the entrance of the Office of Werewolf Mate Affairs, take my hand, and slide a ring onto my finger.

But that was in the past. Now, my heart was as calm as a still lake.

I quietly closed the lid and placed it on the table, saying, "Thanks."

Tyler stared at me, frowning, as if he couldn't understand my indifference. "What's going on…"

I glanced at him, somewhat detached. Maybe in his imagination, I should have gasped and cried upon seeing the ring, and then put all my grievances and unhappiness behind me.

At that thought, I smiled mockingly and said in a deliberately perfunctory tone right to his face, "Oh wow, I'm so touched. Are you satisfied now?"

I thought he would give up at that point, but I didn't expect him to grow angry and humiliated.

"Ginny, all I did was take Vivian to see the Werewolf Council Office. Plus, I already agreed to be your mate, so how long are you going to keep making a fuss?"

I wasn't intimidated by his stormy expression and stayed calm, replying, "You misunderstood. I'm just tired."

His expression finally shifted. It was the first time he truly sensed my distance from him.

Tyler bit his lip and reached out to grab my hand, but suddenly, his phone rang shrilly, cutting off his motion.

It was a call from Vivian.

He glanced at me, about to explain, but I spoke first. "You're busy with your work. There's no need to explain. I understand everything."

I sounded so understanding that it caught him completely off guard, unsure how to respond. He gripped my hand tightly, as if trying to figure out what I was really thinking.

However, the ringtone kept getting louder and sharper. In the end, under my gaze, he let go of my hand.

"For the 101st proposal, I'll go to the Office of Werewolf Mate Affairs in person."

With that, he hurriedly left.

I went back to my room to rest as if nothing had happened and slept the most peaceful sleep I had had in five years.

Once I completed the handover of my duties and left Centrum City's Werewolf Council, he would never be able to find me again.

After the wedding, my life with Leo was sweet and beautiful. Soon after we mated, we welcomed our daughter, and the three of us spent several wonderful years together.Five years later, because my parents were getting older, Leo and I decided to return to Centrum City with our daughter and settle down there."Ginny, are you sure about this? Going back to Centrum City might bring about some trouble," Leo said with concern.I nodded. "Yes, I've made up my mind. My parents are getting older and want to return home to where they belong."I held Leo's hand and added, "Besides, our pup is already five. She needs better education opportunities.""Alright, I'll respect your decision," Leo said as he leaned gently on my shoulder. "Whatever you decide, I'll always support you."After returning to Centrum City, we bought a large house and brought my parents to live with us. The five of us living together made the atmosphere inside the house lively and warm. That was until one afternoon, wh

"You were right to leave this time," Quinn said, nodding in agreement. "Being with Tyler would have driven you insane sooner or later with that controlling nature of his.""By the way, how long are you planning to stay this time?" she added."I'm not leaving," I replied softly, gazing at the beautiful scenery outside the window. "I plan to settle down here."Quinn was briefly stunned, and then she smiled. "That's great. Mom and Dad have missed you. Now, our whole family can finally be together again."In the days that followed, I immersed myself in the long-lost company of my family.Though my parents were busy with the Allied pack's Elders' Council, they still made time to eat with me and chat. Quinn would also occasionally take me to wander the pack market.During that time, I nearly forgot everything about the Werewolf Council in Centrum City. That was, until that peace was broken by a letter."Ginny, someone delivered an unsigned letter." Quinn handed me a gray parchment en

Tyler didn't hold back, his words cold and ruthless as he snapped, "Leave! I'll say it one more time—leave!"He shoved Vivian away, his cloak whipping through the air as his silver eyes glinted icily. Then, he turned and walked off.Under the moonlight, he left Vivian standing alone at the entrance of the Mate Affairs office as tears slid down her cheeks, glistening in the dark. She knew then that her relationship with Tyler was completely over.Their emotional scene was caught by werewolf media reporters who had been staking out near the Mate Affairs office. Reporters from The Silvermoon Times immediately transmitted the live footage back to headquarters, and within minutes, social media platforms across the region were flooded.Immediately, public opinion erupted in an uproar."What's going on? Didn't Ginny stand Tyler up? Is Vivian trying to steal the spotlight now?""Is Vivian trying to swoop in while he's vulnerable? That's so inappropriate!""Alpha Tyler shoved Vivian in

My resignation, coupled with Tyler being stood up, instantly triggered a flood of speculation. My colleagues began recalling every little moment between Tyler and me. All those small details they had once overlooked were now blown out of proportion and layered with endless interpretations."Looking back now, Ginny's devotion to Alpha Tyler was truly heartbreaking."'Yeah, she always helped him handle the Council's messes. I remember once, Alpha Tyler worked late into the night. Ginny said she had work too, but she actually stayed just to be with him and didn't leave his side.""Alas, it's such a shame he didn't cherish her and instead got so close to Vivian."Scandals had always been the most eye-catching stories, and I, caught in the middle of all the chatter, had become the tragic figure who had been wronged.I could already picture Tyler's state at that moment. He must have been searching for me everywhere like a wolf out of control. He called me again and again, but luckily,

The moment the plane took off, I let out a long sigh of relief, feeling as if I were finally free. I closed my eyes, switched my phone to airplane mode, and prepared to enjoy a good rest in this long-lost moment of peace. My favorite ballad, an ancient melody of the werewolf packs, played on loop through my headphones. Soft and lilting, it felt as if it was awakening me from a long, terrible dream."You're free now, Ginny," Nini said to me.For years, I had felt trapped in the endless, vicious cycle spun by Tyler. I lost myself for a love I had foolishly believed in, and constantly expressed my affection for him again and again.Even though I had made 100 requests to bond with him and was met with cold rejection and soul-crushing disappointment every single time, I never wavered. I believed that if I was persistent enough, someday he would become my mate. However, I was wrong. To Tyler, my love had been nothing more than a ridiculous one-sided confession, something he toyed wi

When I arrived at the Werewolf Council Office and walked toward my usual workstation as always, a colleague stopped me."Ginny, you're in trouble today."I looked at him, confused. I had already submitted my resignation and was preparing to leave the Werewolf Council, so what kind of trouble would I possibly be in?Just then, my colleague pointed ahead. That was when I noticed that Vivian had already taken over my original workstation. After some explanation from my colleague, I finally understood. Today was Vivian's official first day as an intern at the Werewolf Council. When choosing her spot, she immediately set her sights on my desk.I silently walked over to Vivian. When she saw me approaching, Vivian raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a sneer. With a soft laugh, she said, "I like this spot. Go find another one."I looked at her and nodded calmly. "Okay, I'll just pack up my things."I didn't say anything more, but when my colleagues saw my response, they all assum
