Tyler’s POV

Lila doesn’t even notice that I’m not driving her home. That’s how I know how completely checked out she is.

I glance at my side, watching her stare out the passenger window quietly. Her cheek rests against her hand while the late February sunlight flashes across her face in streaks of gold and shadow.

Sighing, I turn back to the road. Then, I make the turn toward my neighborhood instead.

Only then does she finally blink and look over at me. “Where are we goin

I’ve now resorted to going on morning runs in order to successfully avoid my parents.Cold air burns my lungs as my sneakers pound against the pavement. The sky is still painted in soft shades of blue and pink, and the sun has barely begun to rise over the quiet neighborhood. For once, nobody is awake to tell me what I should be doing with my life. No lectures about finals, questions about Harvard, or warnings about Tyler. It’s just me, the sound of my breathing, and the ache in my legs.I turn a corner ahead harder than necessary, trying to outrun the frustration simmering beneath my skin. It’s been three days since the disaster in the garage, and the air in my house still feels tense enough to choke on. Mom barely talks to me unless it’s about studying, and every time Tyler’s name comes up, her mouth tightens like she swallowed something sour.A distraction, that’s all she sees him as now.She doesn’t know, or even want to, the boy who bought me art su

Then, I make the turn toward my neighborhood instead.Only then does she finally blink and look over at me. “Where are we going?”“Trust me,” I say. That gets a tiny reaction out of her at least. She lifts one brow slightly. “That usually ends badly for people.”I snort softly. “For other people maybe.”She shakes her head faintly, but she doesn’t argue again. The closer we get to my house, the tighter my grip becomes on the steering wheel. Because honestly? I have no idea if this is a good idea. All weekend I kept thinking about her face in that garage. The way she looked standing in front of h

By Monday morning, Tyler Brooks has apparently created a trend.Posters, flowers, and balloons line every hallway in Westfield High, and it looks like a rom-com exploded inside. One guy is literally holding a guitar in the middle of the courtyard while his friends record him serenading some poor girl who looks seconds away from fainting from embarrassment.“PROM?” is painted across half the school parking lot in giant chalk letters. Someone has taped candy bars to a locker with the words, “It would be SWEET if you went to prom with me.” And another person somehow got permission to use the morning announcements to ask their girlfriend. It’s chaos, absolute chaos. And it’s all because my boyfriend decided to do a promposal in February when prom isn’t until May.“Your boyfriend started a disease,” Maya mutters as we walk through the hallway.Normally, I’d laugh. But it’s a bit hard to summon the ability to feel any kind of joy when all I see is my destroyed painting every time that I clo

The sharp smell of paint still clings to me no matter how hard I try to erase it.My shoulders curve inwardly as I sit on the edge of the couch, while Mom paces the living room like she’s the one who’s been violated. The police already came and left after taking a report that sounded painfully empty even as it was spoken aloud. As soon as they listed out the obvious – no witnesses, cameras, or signs of who did it – I knew there’d be no going forward with the investigations. They’d probably just chalk it up to some kids playing a prank and close the case. But I’d be the one left with the destruction and loss.I can still see the remains of my painting every time I blink. The shredded canvas. The ruined colors smeared together like someone deliberately wanted to erase every hour I spent working on it. And the one dream I’ve carefully protected most of my life, gone with it.“Are you even listening to me, Lila?” Mom throws her hands into the air when I don’t respond. “I knew this was get

My body sags with relief as soon as last period ends.I trudge out of class, with Maya beside me, already dreading the whispers and pointed stares no doubt waiting for me in the hallways.A tall, gangly boy, that I recognize as a junior suddenly stops in front of Maya and I. “Here,” he says, then shoots out his arm.Confused, I stare at the single white rose in his hand, then back at his face. “What…”I don’t get to finish my question before he grabs my hand and shoves the rose into my palm, then runs off. I turn to Maya, my mouth open. “What the hell?”“Hey, Lila,” a chorus of voices call.Swiveling to the side, I watch as a couple of giddy girls skip over to me. They each hand me single white roses. “You’re amazing, girl,” one of them says, before they all run off, giggling. From then on, for every step Maya and I take towards the exit, students I barely know keep stopping me and handing me roses, some awkward and some overly excited. And by the tw

Tyler’s POVThe second Jamie disappears from the cafeteria, the entire room erupts.People pretend not to stare while obviously staring, phones already appearing in their hands. I can practically feel the attention turning toward Lila like a spotlight, which I know she hates.I look down at her immediately. She’s gone still beside me, and her fingers are tightening around the edge of the table so hard her knuckles pale.“Lila,” Maya says softly.“I’m fine,” Lila answers too quickly.Bullshit.I push back my chair before I even think about it. “Come on.”Her eyes flick toward me, and she looks overwhelmed enough that it almost physically hurts to look at her.As soon as she nods, I grab both our trays before she can touch hers, moving closer instinctively the second she stands. If anyone has something stupid to say or try, they’ll have to go through me first.Alex catches my eye as we start toward the cafeteria doors. His brows lift slight
