It looks like a boutique exploded in Maya’s bedroom.

Dresses of different colors and designs are everywhere, on the bed, draped over her chair, and half hanging out of her closet like they’re trying to escape. Shoes line the floor in chaotic pairs, and somewhere beneath it all, her speaker hums softly with a playlist she insists is “getting us in the mood.”

Seated at the edge of her bed, I stare down at my phone, waiting for a reply that never comes. The last text I sent to Tyler

“Careful with that, honey.” “I’m being careful,” I mutter, adjusting my grip on the box that is definitely heavier than it looks. My dad snorts beside me, effortlessly balancing two larger boxes like they weigh nothing. “That’s what you said right before you dropped my toolbox last time.” “I did not drop it,” I argue. “It slipped.” “Mm-hmm.” I shoot him a look, but I’m smiling. The hardware store smells like wood, metal, and something faintly chemical. And when my Dad had asked me if i wanted to go with him, I’d been so bored out of my mind that i jumped at the chance. “You sure you don’t want me to carry that?” he asks, nodding at the box in my hands. “I’ve got it,” I insist. “I’m strong, you know.” He raises a brow. “You do know I’ve seen you try to open pickle jars, right?” I gasp. “That was one time!” “And you still needed help.” “I can’t believe you

Tyler’s POVInviting Lila over for dinner shouldn’t feel like walking into a high-stakes game, but it does.“Relax,” Alex had said earlier when I told him. “It’s just dinner, not the Super Bowl.”Easy for him to say. He doesn’t have my father.Lila stares up at me, her eyes wide with innocence, when I push the door open. She’s dressed in a simple dress that looks nothing like what she wore to the party. But it still renders me speechless nonetheless.“Hey,” she beams.“Hey,” I reply, trying to sound normal as I tug restlessly at the collar of my shirt.I try not to overthink the fact that this is the first time she’s officially coming over as my girlfriend. But it doesn’t work. I still have half the mind to pick her up and run far away from here with her as possible. But my mom had insisted on having her over when she found out Lila was the babysitter she hired. She’d made my father promise to be on his best behavior too, so hopefully tonight won

I don’t recognize myself. That’s the first thought that hits me somewhere between my third failed attempt at tossing a ping-pong ball into a red cup and the moment it actually lands.“Oh my God!” Maya screams from somewhere behind me.“I told you!” Alex shouts, slapping the table.Across from me, Tyler looks half impressed and half amused. “You’ve been holding out on me, Garcia,” he says, narrowing his eyes playfully.I grin, feeling lighter than I have in… I don’t even know how long. “Beginner’s luck.”“Mm,” he hums, unconvinced. “We’re about to test that.”“Bring it,” I shoot back. The table erupts again as I pick up another ball, and somehow, I make that one too.“NO WAY!” Maya yells, jumping up and down.Tyler runs a hand over his mouth, shaking his head like he’s trying not to smile too much.“This is actually embarrassing,” one of his teammates mutters.“Speak for yourself,” Tyler replies lazily, but there’s pride in his voi

Maya and I slide into the backseat, and the moment the car door shuts behind us, she and Alex fall into easy conversation almost immediately.I, on the other hand, keep my hands folded in my lap as I try very hard not to be hyper-aware of Tyler in the front. It’s ridiculous. He showed up, despite not replying my texts since lunch at the cafeteria today. We literally just saw each other, and yet, he hasn’t said another word to me or even glanced at me in the rearview mirror.Maya nudges me lightly with her elbow. “You look like you’re about to take an exam.”“Shut up,” I mutter under my breath. She grins and goes back to talking to Alex.Meanwhile, I stare out the window, watching the streetlights blur past, my reflection faint in the glass. Every now and then, I catch Tyler’s silhouette in the mirrorMy fingers tighten slightly.“…and then she literally said…” Maya’s voice fades in and out as my thoughts spiral. Is he still mad? Or is this ju

The last text I sent to Tyler stares back at me.“Okay, option one,” Maya announces, holding up a sleek black dress. “The classic and timeless little black dress.”I barely glance up. “Mhm.”“Option two,” she continues, tossing the black one aside and lifting a deep emerald dress with thin straps and a dangerously low back. “This screams main character energy.”I sigh, dropping my phone onto the bed. “He’s still not replying.”Maya groans, and lowers the dress. “Lila Garcia.”“I don’t get it,” I mutt

You’d think I’d have gotten used to the stares and whispers by now, but when I walk into the cafeteria holding Tyler’s hand, it’s like stepping onto a spotlighted stage all over again.Tyler, as usual, just doesn’t care. He squeezes my hand gently, leaning slightly closer. “Relax, Garcia,” he murmurs. “You look like you’re about to bolt.”“I might,” I mutter under my breath.“You won’t,” he says easily.I glance at him. “And why is that?”His lips tilt into a small, confident smile. “Because you’re with me.”I roll my eyes, but my grip tightens around his hand anyway.Maya spots us from our usual table first, and her mouth actually falls open.Alex, sitting across from her, follows her gaze, and then chokes on whatever he’s drinking.“Well,” Maya says slowly as we approach the table, “this is… new.”“You okay, man?” Alex asks Tyler, like he’s genuinely concerned.Tyler shrugs, unfazed. “Never better.”“Blink twice if you’re being

As soon as I push open the door, the smell of onions and garlic wafts through my nose.I smile at the sight of my mother standing at the stove with a wooden spoon in hand as steam curls around her like a halo. Dad is seated at the small dining table, peering down at the stack of papers before him th

By the next morning, everyone knows. The picture has spread faster than wildfire, and so has the narrative people have attached to it. Whispers trail after me in the school hallways, are passed between phones, and are reshaped and sharpened until they barely resemble the truth.“She’s using the bab

The following evening, Tyler doesn’t look at me when he walks in through the door. His duffel bag hangs gingerly on his shoulder, his hoodie is darkened with sweat at the collar, there’s dirt smeared along one of his sleeves, and his hair is flattened unevenly. He looks exhausted.“Hey,” I say care

Lila's POVI bolt out the door the second the bell rings, my cheek burning. The look on Noah’s face when he saw my drawing makes me clutch my sketchbook tighter against my chest. Why did he have to flip that page open? No, why did I draw Tyler and his stupid jawline and messy hair and that sharp, f
