Progress

The entire room was filled with darkness, I could feel a stronger presence of someone, of someone I love or someone I’d loved so much. A ray of light shone in through the door, I got closer, I could see a shadow, fear ran through me but I kept getting closer, closer and closer. I realized who it was, that’s my husband, oh my ex, oh no he’s dead. I called on him Rolly, Rolly, is that you? I could see him smile at me. Why did you leave me this way I asked? I got no reply. I stood there speechless. I still love you. He said to me,

I jumped off from my bed, fear grabbed me, I looked around to know where I was and if I was alone. I had already packed to my new place and I was still trying to get comfortable with the whole place. Oh, what I dream. I said and relaxed. A little tear ran down my eyes, will I keep living this way, Rolly what are you doing to me? I checked my stand to know what time it was. It was still 5 am, and I couldn’t sleep again. I came off from my bed, searched for my robe and my phone, and went to the kitchen to get coffee because I needed it. My entire house was beautifully decorated, I’d asked the home interior to make it to my taste. My kitchen was decorated with a brown wooden terrace. I made my coffee and got to the living room, I wasn’t much of a fan of tv, so I’d checked back on my mail on my P.C. For over a month now, I decided to do actual work. I’d stopped the flower shop and through this period, I’d been applying for jobs. It was quite tough for me, after I’d gotten my degree, I never had an experience. As soon as I was done with college, I decided to start my own horticulture business. I’d studied business management but I picked up interest in starting my flower shop. It was a big decision for me, my parents were entirely not in support, except for my friend Julie, who’d always begged me to do something better. She was not against it but she felt I was wasting my brains by just selling flowers. So she was happy when I told her I was ending the flower business. I could hear her excitement when she spoke to me. “I’m happy that finally, and for once you agree to my opinion,” she said. “Well, I’m ready to move on and with that, I think ending the flower business is part of it too. I want to do something differently, I’m ready to have my life again. I replied with a smile. I’m happy you’re ready to take control of your life and I’m ready to support you with anything, as for the job I’ll try to link you up” Julie continued. I know I needed support with finding a job but at the same time, I know how my friend could be especially trying to help me move on with my life, I’ve to warn her. I thought to myself  “Hey, don’t do anything I wouldn’t like'' I said to her while pointing to her. “Yeah yeah yeah, I’ve heard you'' she replied with a big grin. I was seated on my new favorite couch, I kept checking my emails, I got some negative replies, I wasn’t so happy. I thought of calling Julie, maybe she’s got news for me. I picked up my phone and called Julie right away. “Hey, babes, what's up?” She said Julie has always been my closest friend for 18 years, although we didn’t start well along the line we blended and since then she's been my ride or dies she’s like my sister. Although our lives differ in a way, she’s loud and wild while I’m the reserved, sweet girl. Many who saw us would ask how we compliment ourselves that much. She’s always had my back and having her in my life is a blessing. “Yes babes, I’m good. Got any reply yet for the job?” I asked. “Well not really, but I spoke to someone and he promised to give me positive feedback” she answered. Okay! I said. I was still surfing my emails, I saw something different and I decided to check on it. Julie can you give me a second, I said to her while still on my P.C., I was reading out the message and I was getting excited for the reply I got. I was sent a date for my interview. I screamed for joy. Wow, I'm proud of you Meghan" Julie said to me on the phone. I just remembered I'm still on a call... I kept pacing the whole room because I couldn't contain my happiness. "This is a cause for celebration, you know? And it is Friday today, let's go out tonight.... and no, you can't say no."  Julie retorted. She just knew I wouldn't want to go but Julie wouldn't want that. “Okay, fine, '' I replied. "Hey, so I've to go now, I'll come to pick you up at night, wear something sexy,(Laugh out loud), and congratulations again dear."  Julie said. I smiled and said thanks. I was pretty much excited about the job, I mean having to wear corporate dresses and going to the office, attending meetings, getting my monthly check pay, and meeting my colleagues. I was so happy and at the same time anxious about the whole thing. But I knew I couldn't wait for next week. Speaking of dresses, I knew I'd have to get new clothes for work, I mean I owned a flower shop and I wasn't looking at what to wear and all. "I think I need to go shopping," I said to myself.

I made my way to the bathroom, showered, and made myself breakfast.  I got dressed up in a silky blue dress and a flat pair of shoes. I kept singing all day till I found myself at the shopping mall. My car was parked in the parking lot. Little thoughts of my husband came in like a flash. I wondered what he thinks of me now, does he feel I’ve forgotten him now. Is he proud of my new decision to get a proper job? Rolly has always been my biggest support when it comes to my flower business. Would he feel I’m doing all these because I never wanted to think about him? I miss you Rolly and nothing is ever going to take you off my mind. I said this and walked my way to the mall. I spent hours getting everything I needed for work and also making sure the house was stocked with items since I won’t have much of the time again. I found a cloth I liked for the party but it was so short, I looked again and again while sizing it to my body. Thank God Julie wasn’t with me because she would have forced me into getting the dress. The color suits you so well, why not get it?  I turned to the voice who spoke so calmly.  I was somehow fluttered and embarrassed at the same time. A young handsome man who was in his late 30s, he had these captivating eyes which swept me off my feet but I was so strong not to let that happen.  Yeah, but it was short. I stuttered and said shyly. Ohm well decency I guess. He said with a little laugh. I wasn’t ready for any small pep talk so I walked out giving him a little head nod, which is a sign that I was leaving. I walked to the counter and made payment for my items. How much I miss shopping, the last time was when I would go shopping with my husband which is now late. My phone started to ring which of course I knew had been Julie. I checked my wrist to know the time. Wow, time runs fast. I said to myself. I had so much on me to bend a bit while adjusting my shopping bag. I searched through my handbag to get my phone. What's up Julie? I spoke for the first time. I hope you’re ready for the party tonight and what did you get for yourself?  Julie said. I could hear her excitement, I remained quiet. Are you home?  Julie asks. I’m just leaving the mall. See you soon. I hung up. I got home, arranged some stuff I got for the kitchen.

Ding Dong

That must be Julie. I thought. I washed my hands in the sink, cleaned my hands in a towel, and reached out for the door. Hey, girl, she said at the top of her voice. What’s so exciting girl? Well you know I’m happy for you, you don’t know how excited I am to see you move on with your life and be happy. Sharap girl and just come in. I bluntly said. I closed the door while she went into the room. So what did you get for yourself? She asked. Work clothes, what else? I replied. Wait hold on…. Don’t tell me you didn’t get any dress for the party tonight. I hope you’re not planning on wearing any of your wifely clothes. Oh, Julie please, there's nothing wrong with my clothes. I said to her. I got something for the party and I met a guy who thought it was cool, the dress was short but I didn’t think I would love it this much, but then I still decided to pick it up but his judging comments were quite annoying. Oh wow, how does he look? Handsome right I can’t deal with you, Julie. Julie goes in to check what id shopped back. We kept chattering and laughing. It was an hour before the party started and Julie had already warned me about making up for the party.

Few minutes, Julie was done making me up and making herself too. We both got dressed and set for the party. I wore a shining gold dress that had a slit just at my knee with my nude heels; my hair was neatly tied in a bun style. While Julie wore a short with a much revealing red tank top this goes along with her red heels. I was the one who drove to the party which wasn’t too far from where I live. Everything felt new and strange, probably because it had been a long time since I went to a party and also because I don’t like parties. As I got in, I felt all eyes in me. I was a bit shy. The new faces, some looked dangerous, some acted weird.  After all, I’m here now so no turning back, and even if I wanted to, Julie would be so mad at me. Julie already made reservations for us and to the fact she was popular around which was because of her job position. We got to the VIP section. I needed a seat, so I moved to a more reserved place. I cited a man who was also to himself; it seems his friend had forced him to. He looked quiet and of course, he was quite handsome too. I became attracted to sort of. What is wrong with you Meghan? Already?

I wiped off the feeling from my mind and glanced away from the handsome dude. Julie came to me with a drink, Hey want to dance? Julie asked. Naaaa I’m fine. I said. Sure? Julie asked again. I nodded. Julie smiled as she recognized someone at the party. For me, the party was loud and seemed boring. I was there staring at everyone and what they were doing. What caught my attention was a man who was dragging a girl to dance with him. It felt disgusting, how could one be with such a man, I thought to myself.

Thoughts of my husband filled my mind. Rolly why are you doing this to me, why?  Why do you keep hunting me? You’re torturing me. You’re the one who left me; I waited for you and now you are hunting me with your thoughts. Why? Tears ran through my cheeks. I didn’t want to feel embarrassed, so I made my way to the toilet. Some girls were in the bathroom mirror, adjusting their makeup and dresses. I went in to pee, came out, and adjusted my makeup too. I was on my way back to the VIP section; I bombed into the same guy I cited from the party. Are you alright? He said. Yeah, I’m fine, I just needed to use the restroom. I noticed you were alone in the VIP section. Can I keep you company? He said this with his head bent to one side like a 6year old child trying to get chocolate from mom. I liked him though because he was quite respectful and that’s what made me say yes to him. We went back to the section; I was the one who followed him to his side. Do you want anything? No thanks. I don’t like to drink. I answered. I became uncomfortable, he kept staring at me. I’m sorry for staring so much, you are beautiful and I can’t keep my eyes off you. Thanks. That’s all I could say. Anyway, I shouldn’t make it boring for you. My name is Tee Jay and I’m new in the city. I once worked with the Olmec motors company but I’m here to start up my own company. That’s good to hear. I said and smiled. I didn’t want to make myself a center of attraction, so I kept my life very private as we kept talking. We-vibe much, he made me laugh. I have never laughed this much. We exchanged numbers and we didn’t realize it was morning already. I enjoyed his company while Julie came around to take me home. Oh, I’ve seen you’ve made a new friend already. She gave me the wicked wink. I shyly put my face down. Okay Mr. Lover man, I’m about to take my friend home if you don’t mind, please. Julie said. We drove back home and Julie didn’t stop asking me about the man from the party.
