Chapter 3

مؤلف: Yestin
"Nora!"

Chase called out to me, urgent, but I didn't slow down, didn't look back.

I caught a cab to the hospital. My mother, Gina Sutton, looked so much better today—there was actual color back in her face.

She handed me a peeled apple, her eyes bright. "Nora, how did the marriage registration photo turn out? Come on, show me."

My throat closed up, and my nose stung with the effort of holding back tears.

I had no idea how to explain any of this to her. I couldn't bear to let her know the truth.

Just as I was gathering the courage to tell her, the door opened, and Chase walked in.

He sat down at the edge of the bed and started rubbing my mother's shoulders with the same easy devotion he'd shown for ten years straight, his voice warm and low. "Nora thought the registration photo came out badly, so she sent it back to get retouched. We'll get the license in a couple days, and we'll show you then, Mom."

Chase had just switched, without missing a beat, from calling her "ma'am" to calling her "Mom." My mother was so moved her eyes welled up, and for a moment, she didn't notice how wrong everything felt between us.

I pulled Chase out into the hallway, my face set. "I already walked away. What more do you want from me?"

Chase reached out, gently and with practiced familiarity, and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. He looked at me and sighed. "Nora. Twelve years together—can you really just let that go?"

What did it matter whether I could let it go?

He already belonged to someone else.

I glared at him, my eyes burning, and let out a cold laugh. "Whether I can or can't, I have to."

I turned to walk away. Chase stepped in front of me, blocking my path.

He gripped my shoulders, then suddenly, like something in him had snapped, crushed me against his chest. "But I can't let you go."

He held me too tight. I shoved against him with everything I had, and still couldn't break free.

"Back in college, when I was saving up to buy you that ring, I worked part-time at a coffee shop. That's where I met Alice.

"She was shy, blushed the second anyone talked to her, and men kept harassing her. I helped her out a lot, and we got close.

"One time, a customer slipped something into her drink at a hotel bar. I ran in to save her, and out of nowhere, she kissed me. I couldn't stop myself, and...

"I thought about cutting things off with her. But Alice was innocent in all this. My conscience wouldn't let me hurt her—it told me I owed her something instead.

"All these years, she's stayed by my side with no title, no promises. She never cried, never made a scene, never fought for more. I'm the one who wronged her. I had to make it right with a marriage certificate."

So twelve years and eight years hadn't just been two numbers that happened to overlap.

While I'd been grinning like an idiot over a diamond ring, Chase had been wrapped up in another woman's arms.

While I'd been in our tiny rented apartment making his favorite sticky barbecue ribs, waiting for him to come home, he'd been eating food some other girl had cooked for him.

Countless moments where I'd felt nothing but happiness had actually been moments of betrayal.

"Enough! I don't want to hear another word about how you two hooked up. Get away from me!"

Crying, I sank my teeth into Chase's shoulder.

The taste of blood filled my mouth. He shuddered with the pain but didn't fight me off.

Chase bore through it, gently stroking the top of my head. "I gave the marriage certificate to Alice, sure. But everything else—whatever she gets, you'll get more.

"Love, money, my time, taking care of your mother like she's my own—none of that shrinks just because Alice and I are married.

"Actually, there's a new medication overseas that's shown real results treating late-stage stomach cancer. Nora, when should we take your mom to try it?"

I closed my eyes, drained, and stopped biting.

All these years, Chase really had been good to me. If it weren't for Alice Foster's existence, I might have been the happiest woman alive.

Anything I wanted, Chase bought for me without ever checking the price.

Anywhere I wanted to go, he came with me, dropping business deals without a second thought.

When my mother got sick, he'd taken care of everything himself, staying up late into the night discussing treatment plans with the doctors.

The staggering medical bills had always been Chase footing the cost.

I couldn't walk away from Chase.

At least, not until my mother got better.

It was a video of Alice hanging out and chatting with a group of girlfriends. She was curled up on the couch with a Budweiser, rolling her eyes nonstop. "That idiot Olivia actually asked me for a birthday present. Like she's somebody."I only bother hanging around her to pump her for Nora's secrets. Plus, with a face and body like hers, she makes me look even better by comparison. Someone like her, my friend? Please."And Chase's best bro is broke and pathetic—born to be somebody's errand boy his whole life."And don't even get me started on his sister. After that day, Chase never came to see me again.Even the medical fund transfers he sent me got intercepted by Alice.Without money, I got moved from a VIP room to a standard room, then from a standard room to a shared ward. The conditions were poor, the medication was basic at best, and my body struggled to heal.A month later, the last of my savings ran out, and I had no choice but to check myself out.Running my fingers over the long, ugly dark-red scar snaking across my chest, a rage so vast it threatened to drown me welled up inside. The first thing I did after leaving the hospital was go straight to the police station to file a report."I want to report a crime. Someone stole my mother's body."The police moved fast. In under a day, they'd traced the body's whereabouts through hospital security footage. The truth had been sitting there the whole time, one phone call away, and Chase had believed Alice based on nothing but a few whispered lies. It would almost have been fu

After apologizing to the hospital director, Chase hung up the phone, his expression darkening. He pulled the still-sniffling Alice tight against him and looked at me with pure disappointment."Nora, I don't even recognize you anymore."How did you turn this vicious? Putting your own mother up to faking her death just to frame Alice—how could you even think of something so twisted?"Playing games with death like that—aren't you afraid it'll come back on you? That you'll actually curse your own mother into an early grave?"Alice cut a glance at me from the corner of her eye, the ghost of a triumphant smile tugging at her lips.My best friend, Olivia, stood with her arms crossed, looking thoroughly pleased with herself. In that moment, none of it mattered anymore—not proving myself right against Alice, not getting Chase to believe me. All I wanted to know was where my mother's body had gone.My mother's attending physician, Dr. Musk, was a man of real integrity, the kind who genui

A knock sounded at the door. Chase got up to answer it, and Alice's tearful face appeared without warning on the other side. Her eyes were red-rimmed, glistening with tears, like a wounded little rabbit.Chase's heart melted on the spot, his voice softening before he even realized it. "Alice, what are you doing here?"Alice threw herself straight into his arms. "If I hadn't come, who knows what kind of lies Nora would've spread about me by now!"Is she really telling people I killed her mother? I didn't! I swear I didn't!"I heard Nora's mother wasn't doing well, so I asked Ollie to take me to visit her."The second we got to the door, I overheard Nora talking to her mother. They were planning for Nora's mom to fake her own death and pin it on me, so you'd hate me for good and the two of them could keep control of your money..."Chase, you've been so good to them, and this is how they repay you. It made me so angry on your behalf. I stormed into the room to confront her, and the

When I woke, the pain in my chest was so sharp it felt like the wound might tear open again if I so much as moved.I forced myself to sit up. Chase, keeping watch at my bedside, rushed to steady me. "Nora, just tell me what you need, and I'll take care of it. The wound hasn't scarred over yet—moving around will only hurt you."He adjusted the hospital bed to a more comfortable angle, settling me in, then made a call to the office. "Nora's hurt. I don't trust a hired nurse to look after her properly. I need to be here myself. Leo, I'm not coming in for the next few days. Sorry to ask, but I need you and the other managers to hold things down."I had no interest in whatever Chase was saying. All I wanted to know was how my mother was doing. Had they managed to save her?I gritted through the pain in my chest and tried to force myself upright. That was when the door burst open, and Dr. Larry Musk, my mother's attending physician, stormed in, his face dark with anger."How many time
