the break in

Caroline’s POV

The air was crisp and damp as my shoes hit the gravel path, the sun barely rising over the manicured hedges surrounding the estate. Daphne jogged a few paces ahead of me, earbuds in, her ponytail bouncing with every step.

Today was a Saturday morning, and not having anything to do, I decided to tag along in Daphne morning routine. But apparently the jogging I thought would take my mind away from all the problems and secrets just didn't work.

I wasn’t paying much attention to where I was stepping. My mind kept drifting back to the letter. The seal. The symbol. And Elijah’s cold and mysterious reaction. He had acted so cold and distant that for a moment,I would have thought that he knew more than he was letting on.

And when i thought that he would at least tell me something, he had even dropped a more eerily message, that still sends shivers down my spine.

I nearly tripped over my own feet when I saw him standing by the iron gate.

Elijah.

  • A Drunken Night With My Ex-Husband Boss   Chapter 73: Research

research Daphne pov The moment I stepped out of the room, the chill I had managed to suppress in front of her came crawling up my spine again.Vortigan…, was a taboo name. Mother one time had told me that I should never involve myself with a vortigan. But to my dismay, Caroline was rumored to be the lost heiress. From the letter ,they had managed to find her even in a protected place like here. My body trembled unconsciously. That's to say that even in their downfall, they were still everywhere. The writing on that mirror… it wasn’t just some idle threat. It was a message. A warning laced with intent. And someone went through great lengths to make sure Caroline saw it. They didn't want her to research more on her heritage.I have a pricking feeling that none of this was related to the Vortigan.I remembered a piece of memory I have tried really hard to suppress. But no matter how insignificant it looked, the connections were too glaring to ignore.Last night, I saw Elijah togethe

  • A Drunken Night With My Ex-Husband Boss   Chapter 72: promise

promiseCaroline povA bone chilling fear descended upon me.I continued to stare at the writing that seems to become more twisted and scary as time goes by.I couldn’t breathe well.My knees almost buckled under me.The words blurred in my vision, Elijah’s warning playing over and over in my mind like a broken record.“You don’t understand what they’re capable of”“The Vortigans are not something to be discussed lightly”I could almost imagine Elijah's eyes telling me ‘I told you so.’This wasn’t just a prank tactic or whatsoever. It was personal, Deliberate. The person that did this. Knew who I was, and knew that I was actively seeking information. But I have not told any other person apart from Elijah?…Is it that it's Elijah that had arranged the whole thing? I began to question myself but it was not making sense. He was not in charge of security, it was Xavier.“Caroline,” Daphne said gently. “You are just suddenly quiet. Talk to me. Please. What’s going on?”I snapped back to

Clear messageCaroline povXavier’s brows were furrowed, his dark shirt slightly wrinkled like he was in the middle of something before he rushed over. I closed my eyes not wanting to know what. His eyes swept over the room, then landed on me, filled with worry, mixed with fury and something else I couldn't identify, Longing, loneliness, desperation.I swallowed hard, trying to find my voice. “I’m fine.”His jaw clenched, and he turned sharply to Elijah. “What the hell happened?”“I should be asking you that,” Elijah shot back, arms crossed. He looked calm, but his stand said otherwise. “You’re the one in charge of security.”The air suddenly turned cold. I took a slow step back as the heat between them flared.Xavier's nostrils flared. “Don’t start with me right now, Elijah.”“No, I think this is the perfect time,” Elijah snapped, stepping forward. “How does someone waltz into the east wing of the most protected place on earth without a trace? Your wing. Your men. Your systems.”Xa

Caroline POVLater that afternoon…We had just passed one of the last magnificent buildings located in the vast johnsons estate. But like I had thought we would stop.Elijah didn't stop.He continued leading deeper into the well-groomed little forest located at the back of the estate. But at this point, I didn't really care much.I bit my lips and followed.I didn’t know where he was taking me. My feet moved of their own will, following Elijah through winding paths and narrow stone steps that twisted deeper into the Johnsons vast estate. The greenery and wild life was so beautiful that I had to take a moment and take in a very deep breath in appreciation despite myself. All around was a calm quietness, mixed together with the sound of insects and birds chirping on trees.. It was magical…I gasped, almost bumping into Elijah again for the second time since today. He had stopped at the foot of what looked like an abandoned greenhouse. Vines crawled over the old stone walls like a sec

  • A Drunken Night With My Ex-Husband Boss   chapter 68: Need to breath

Caroline POVOne Week Later…The pricking pains on my skin had finally faded, leaving only a dull echo beneath my skin, a reminder of how i survived death. My body had healed, but my heart... well, that was another story.I sat quietly in front of the mirror, brushing my long hair with slow, deliberate strokes. The golden sunlight spilled lazily through the wide-open windows, but instead of warmth, it brought a strange kind of stillness and unusual tightness.Behind me, Daphne folded clothes into a chest, her movements a little too stiff and deliberate. She had been quiet lately. Too quiet ever since she came back from the family meeting that was held seven days ago.Knowing daphne too well, She wasn’t herself, and from time to time, her eyes would flicker to me, and every time I caught her eyes, she would avert it immediately. But the little moment our eyes had met, I saw something hiding behind her usual cheer, something distant… haunted.“Are you okay?” I asked softly, placing m
