Chapter 4

Author: Forced Love Again
The family dinner was held at the ancestral Patterson family estate. Every relative from the Patterson side of the family showed up.

I deliberately wore an all-black suit, dressed solemnly and formally, as though I were attending a funeral.

The moment I opened the heavy doors to the dining hall, the lively room instantly fell silent.

Noticing my outfit, Dad's face darkened. He stormed over to me in a rage.

"Why are you dressed like that? Are you intentionally trying to remind us your brother is dead?"

I look at him calmly, then let my eyes drift past him toward the center of the hall. A memorial table stood there, lined with framed photographs of all the deceased members of the Patterson clan.

Caleb's photograph was prominently displayed in the front row.

"Wasn't today about earning some good karma for Caleb?" I asked, a faint smile tugging at my lips. "I figured he'd be happy to see me dressed respectfully from wherever he is."

Mom scoffed coldly, then pointed at the memorial table.

"Since you know we're doing this for your brother, go kneel in front of his photo and pray for his soul," she ordered. "You're not allowed to get up until dinner starts. Think about what you've done and ask him for forgiveness. Then say a few more prayers for him!"

I stood rooted to the spot, completely unmoving.

"Why should I?"

The hall instantly erupted into an uproar.

Dad froze for a second before yelling, "You're only alive because of Caleb! You owe him your life! Forget kneeling there and saying some prayers—even if I told you to give up your life for him right now, it would still be the least you could do!"

I just stood there with my back straight, not saying a word.

Seeing this, Mom turned to the relatives gathered around us and began beating her chest dramatically.

"Everyone, do you see this? My flesh and blood gave his life for this ungrateful bastard, and now he won't even say a few prayers for him!" she accused.

"For the past ten years, every time his father and I close our eyes, all we can see is Caleb struggling in the river. We raised this adopted son from the time he was a child and put him through school. Now that he's a big-shot businessman, he doesn't give a damn about us anymore!"

Uncle Rafael, Dad's older brother, slammed his hand on the table, shot up to his feet, and glared at me.

"Asher Patterson! A man can't forget his roots! You owe your life to Caleb! We're just asking you to kneel in front of the man who saved your life and say a few prayers for him! That's the least you can do. What right do you have to refuse?"

The other relatives joined in, piling on the guilt.

"Exactly! He's so heartless! How can anyone be this cold-blooded?"

"Caleb was in the prime of his life when he died. Asher's the older brother. What's wrong with kneeling and paying his respects to him?"

"Asher Patterson, have a conscience and get down on your knees!"

With everyone worked into a frenzy, Dad raised his hand and slapped me across the face.

"You ungrateful piece of trash! Get on your knees right now!" he roared as he reached for my shoulder, trying to force me down physically.

But before his hand could land on my shoulder, I grabbed his wrist in a vice-like grip.

He froze, completely stunned. He clearly hadn't expected the person who had always silently endured everything to actually fight back.

"You dare raise a hand against me?" he demanded, his eyes wide.

"Why wouldn't I?"

I shoved him away. He stumbled back a few steps before crashing into a nearby chair. Then, under the shocked gazes of everyone present, I grabbed Caleb's photograph and smashed it onto the floor.

With a sharp crash, the framed photograph shattered into pieces.

"Asher Patterson! Have you lost your mind?" Uncle Rafael shouted in horror.

I swept my cold gaze across every face in the room and sneered. "Memorializing someone who's still alive? Seriously? Aren't you worried you'll jinx him?"

The swift police action, coupled with the detailed financial records and surveillance recordings I provided, quickly turned the case into a massive local headline. In the interrogation room, Simon and Krystal continuously threw each other under the bus.Krystal also completely lost her mind while still in the detention center. She simply couldn't accept the reality that the son she had loved and spoiled for 25 years was actually the bastard son of the woman she loathed, while she had personally destroyed her own flesh and blood. Every day, she'd bang her head against the wall, muttering, "My Asher…" over and over again, before flying into violent fits and cursing out Simon and Caleb. As for Simon, he suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage. Although the doctors managed to save his life, he was left partially paralyzed and completely incontinent. Then there was Caleb, still throwing yacht parties out in Valrya. When the police kicked down his door, they found him drunk out of his mind

Hearing that, Krystal just stood there with her mouth hanging open, looking as though someone had sucked the soul right out of her body.I ripped my collar open, exposing the old, faded scars crisscrossing my collarbone and neck. Those were all marks from my childhood, left by the times she whipped me with a cane whenever she was upset."You said that you felt satisfied every time you beat me, yelled at me, and made me eat leftovers, because you were tormenting that woman's bastard child."But Mom, the person you were torturing was your own flesh and blood! And that precious son you spent 25 years cherishing? He's the bastard child of the woman you hated most!"Krystal let out a piercing, agonized scream. Her entire reality completely shattered in that instant."Simon Patterson! You bastard! Give me back my son! Give my son back to me!"She pounced on Simon like a madwoman, wrapping both hands around his neck and squeezing with all her strength. She even sank her teeth into his s

Hearing this, Simon's eyes widened. "You… What do you know?"Seeing the fear and guilt on his face, Uncle Rafael and the other relatives immediately realized something was wrong."Simon, what the hell is going on? Which of these two boys is your actual biological son?" Uncle Rafael asked grimly.Simon hung his head and said nothing, only clutching his hair in anguish."If he can't say it, then I'll say it for him."I slammed all the information the investigator had uncovered about Caleb and me onto the table."25 years ago, my so-called mother, Krystal, and another woman each gave birth to a baby boy at the same hospital, one day apart. That woman was called Charity Danville, and she was Simon's first love."The moment Krystal heard that name, her expression turned stormy. Back then, Charity had dumped Simon because he didn't have money. Later, he eventually settled for Krystal and married her."Charity got pregnant out of wedlock. Right after giving birth to her baby boy, she

All eyes were locked on me as I pulled the documents from the manila envelope one by one."There are two DNA test results here," I announced, my voice echoing clearly through the massive hall. "One is between me, Mom, and Dad, and the other is between Caleb and them."My parents froze for a second, exchanging a look I couldn't quite read. Then, Dad suddenly let out a cold scoff. "A DNA test? Have you lost your mind, Asher? You're just a bastard child we Pattersons adopted years ago. What? Now you're delusional enough to hope that we're your real parents so you can lay claim to the Patterson family fortune?"Dad crossed his arms, looking utterly smug. He didn't even bother taking a closer look at the report.I looked him straight in the eye and gave a helpless little laugh."Yes, I've always believed that I was just an unwanted bastard, too. I thought I was lucky to have been adopted by you. So I didn't care when you beat me or yelled at me whenever you felt like it. I didn't ca

The hall fell dead silent. Everyone stared at me as if I had completely lost my mind.Dad was the first to snap out of it. He grabbed a wine bottle from the table and charged right at me."You bastard! How dare you smash Caleb's photo! I'll kill you!"I didn't dodge or flinch. Instead, I pulled a remote from my suit pocket and pressed a button."Before you do that, why don't we all watch a little show first?"Hearing that, Dad froze mid-swing and instinctively turned toward the front of the hall, where a projection screen was slowly being lowered.A crystal-clear video began to play.On the screen, a young man wearing sunglasses lounged aboard a private yacht, with an attractive woman in a bikini under each arm. He raised his champagne glass and laughed loudly."Shoutout to my sucker of a big brother for buying me another six-figure luxury car this year! Once the old man and old lady get their hands on his company, I'm going to buy myself a yacht!"The young man removed his su
