Chapter 2

Author: Fantastic Time
James tried to take the application document from me, but I dodged out of his way, saying, "You're usually pretty busy. I can hand it to Commander Bowen."

He shot a suspicious look at me. "Why are you acting so crazy today? Forget it. Do whatever you want."

I simply smiled at James and didn't say a word. I did feel like I was going crazy, but I also realized that I could finally set myself free now that I had been given another chance at life.

The two of us were quiet during the car ride. However, the silence also made James uncomfortable.

In a surprising turn of events, he cleared his throat and spoke first. "I heard that the Art Troupe is putting on a show tonight. If the troop doesn't have any assignments tonight, I'll take you to see it."

I looked at him in surprise. In my past life, I was the one who suggested that we watch the Art Troupe's show. James had pressed his lips together while looking impatient at the time.

"I'm only marrying you because my parents are forcing me to. I'm not actually going to date you. You'd better get this through your head."

That was why I didn't say a word this time around.

Displeasure flickered in James' eyes at my lack of response. "If you don't want to go, then forget I said anything—"

"I want to go!" I answered in a rush, interrupting him. "Of course, I want to go."

When he saw how I couldn't stop myself from smiling, his mouth fell open as if he wanted to say something. However, he remained quiet and just started the car in the end. "Wait for me after dinner—"

Before he could finish his sentence, a member of the Art Troupe dashed in front of the car, shouting, "Captain Wesley! Something bad happened to Emily!"

James slammed his foot on the brakes. "I'm going to take a look. Go back by yourself."

I nodded. "Okay. Hurry up and go."

He was obviously panicked by the sudden news, but his entire body stiffened when he heard my response. He turned his head slowly to look at me before asking, "You… Aren't you jealous?"

A bitter feeling churned in my gut. I wouldn't have wasted ten years of my past life if there was any use in being jealous. Before I could answer, he warned coldly, "I don't care what you're playing at, but you better watch what you do."

James then turned around and hurried away. It seemed that he didn't notice the bitterness and disappointment in my eyes.

In my past life, I had never stopped him from playing favorites with Emily. I was well aware that I couldn't force him to fall in love with me.

I returned home alone. I had just stepped through the gate when Felicia Axford, James' mother, greeted me enthusiastically from next door.

"Has the troop approved your marriage application, Katherine?" she asked. She frowned when she looked behind me and continued, "Where's James? Why didn't that brat come home with you?"

I chuckled and explained that something urgent came up with the troop that he had to attend to. Despite my explanation, Felicia looked upset.

"That brat. Is work more important than loving his wife? I'm going to teach him a lesson when he gets back!"

Jeremiah Wesley, James' father, shook his head helplessly. "He's getting out of line. I hope you don't take his actions to heart, Katherine."

My eyes stung as I fully digested the situation I was in. I was never treated with such warmth even once in the past ten years. Felicia and Jeremiah would have treated me like I was their own daughter if James hadn't turned his back on them because of me.

I wanted to tell them the truth, but realized that I couldn't find the words. In the end, I held Felicia's hand and said softly, "I'd like to thank you and Mr. Wesley for taking care of me during the past few years. I'll definitely repay your kindness."

"You're so silly. There's no need to repay us." Felicia scolded, though not unkindly. "I'm more than happy that you're marrying my son."

I didn't say anything else and simply tightened my hold on Felicia's hand. I wasn't going to be James' wife in this life. He wouldn't have to bend to his parents' wishes and could freely pursue the person he actually loved. He could live his life freely.

As for Felicia and Jeremiah, they wouldn't be resented by their own child for the rest of their lives for playing matchmaker between James and me.

When evening fell, I made my way to the entrance of the Art Troupe Theater, ticket in hand. However, James never showed up even after the performance ended. I knew that he had broken our promise to meet once again.

My voice was calm when I spoke. "We never got married, so we have nothing to do with each other. It's useless for you to kidnap me."One of the men scoffed in response. "You're a stubborn little bitch, aren't you? Our insider told us that you're the person James loves the most. I want to see exactly how far Captain Wesley will go for his woman."I couldn't help but feel like history was repeating itself. I wanted to struggle, but I also knew that it would be a pointless endeavor.I decided to plan ahead instead. If James made an appearance, I would rather kill myself than be in his debt. However, what I didn't expect was for Luke to arrive on the scene first. When the abductors were cursing at each other, he snuck behind them before lunging at them, starting a fierce battle between both sides.Realizing that they were no match for Luke, one of the abductors pulled out a knife and lunged at me. "Even if I have to die, I'm taking you with me!" he screamed.Hopelessness washed over

James lifted his head, his eyes shining with anticipation.I shook my head slowly. "How are you going to repay me for the life that you owe me?"James broke down completely upon hearing my words. "I'm sorry, Katherine. I'm so sorry."I wasn't bothered enough to listen to his apologies anymore. I turned around and exited the ward. I made sure to keep my distance from him for the next few days. Luke, who always dropped by the hospital to look for me, noticed my odd behavior and couldn't suppress his curiosity for long. "Who's that injured man to you?""He's someone from my past. I don't want to talk about him," I said, shaking my head.Luke pressed his lips together before he cleared his throat and changed the subject. "We've known each other for quite some time now, Katherine. The truth is, I've always had feelings for you. Would you consider going out with me?"As I studied his reserved appearance, I realized that I wasn't surprised in the slightest by his confession. There

"This is wonderful. You're still alive, Katherine."I frowned slightly. "Let go, James. Your wounds have split open again!"But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't free my hand from his grip. Impatience simmered within me as I raised my voice. "I said, let go!"James was stunned by my outburst as he let go of my hand in a daze. I rolled my wrist as I changed the subject. "Why are you here?""I… I came here to get rid of the bandits, but I got caught in one of their traps. I didn't want you to face the same danger you did in your past life. That's why I'm here."I immediately understood that James had also been reborn after listening to his explanation. After seeing my response, he carefully asked, "Katherine… Were you also reborn?"I remained emotionless as I changed his bandages. "Don't make any sudden movements, and don't let your wounds get wet. You should also try your best to stick to a clean diet for the time being."The light in James' eyes gradually dimmed. He sudden

When my parents were still alive, they had always wanted me to study medicine to save lives. By joining the medical team, I could work hard to strive toward this goal. Life was simple but meaningful. However, transport was inconvenient here, especially when I had to make a house call. There was once when I spent too much time with a patient, so the sky was already darkened when I finally left his house.I couldn't help but notice how dark and gloomy my surroundings were during my journey back. My heart felt like it had been frozen solid when I suddenly saw greenish lights gleaming in the dark that were getting closer and closer to me. "Shut up!" James roared. His eyes were bloodshot as he tightened his grip around Emily's neck. "Katherine isn't dead! She's just hiding because she's angry! You damned bitch. It's all your fault for seducing me time and time again—"James couldn't finish his sentence, not when he knew how ridiculous his flimsy excuse was.Fear finally began to spread through Emily when she realized how difficult it was getting for her to breathe. She struggled against James' hold and begged for his forgiveness. "I was wrong, James. Please let me go."Just then, a rough and masculine voice resounded from outside. "Emily Hill! Don't think that I don't know that you're hiding here! How dare you seek out another man after spending my money, you bitch."The newcomer was the son of a factory owner in town. He kicked the door open, frowning when he laid eyes upon the scene. "I didn't know you liked to mess around with another man's woman, Captain Wesley. "Aren't you afraid of your reputation being drag

The guard hesitated for a moment before speaking. "We've verified the situation, Captain Wesley. There was a car on the bridge when it collapsed. Ms. Erikson was in that car…"He then handed a death certificate and a marriage application to James.James numbly accepted both documents. His eyes widened like saucers when he saw Emily's name on the marriage application. His voice was filled with disbelief as he muttered, "No. No, it can't be. Katherine loves me so much…"Tears streamed down James' cheeks and dripped on the document, turning the bright red stamp blurry. The papers were thin and weighed nothing, but at that moment, they felt unbearably heavy. Unable to control himself, he spat out a mouthful of fresh blood before collapsing in a heap on the bed.…James had a very long dream. In the dream, I didn't die, and we got married without a hitch. However, we didn't have a happy married life. His dream self refused to see me because I was responsible for Emily's death, the
