Chapter 1

Author: Clearwater Hill
It didn't take long after the alumni get-together for everyone to notice something was off about Kathleen Whelan.

First, she deleted every post about her husband, Greg Gilliam, from her social media.

When Greg came home at night, she no longer left a light on for him.

Then she stopped her IVF treatments.

Five years ago, Kathleen and Greg had been in a car accident. At the moment of impact, she had thrown herself over him and shielded him with her own body.

Greg had come out of the crash almost completely unscathed. Kathleen had been badly injured and remained unconscious for three straight days.

Afterward, the doctors told her she would likely struggle to conceive for the rest of her life. But Greg's family wanted him to carry on the family line and give them grandchildren to dote on.

So month after month, Kathleen went back to the hospital and endured injections with long needles. Every day, she hoped she would finally get pregnant.

Eventually, she stopped handling the Gilliam family's day-to-day affairs too. She no longer went to Gilliam Manor to check in on them, and she stopped caring what Greg was doing or where he went.

It was almost as if she had forgotten she was Mrs. Gilliam and could have spent her life in comfort and luxury. Instead, she threw herself into work, leaving home early and coming back late.

It wasn't until that day that Greg finally realized how much she had changed. After wrapping up his work, he went to her studio.

He arrived in a tailored suit, carrying himself with the quiet authority of a man who was used to being in charge.

"Kathleen."

Greg called her name from the doorway, his voice warm and gentle.

Kathleen paused over her work but didn't turn around.

"What is it?" she asked quietly.

She used to get up the second he came through the door. She would help him out of his cold suit jacket, then cup his hands in hers and breathe on them until they were warm.

Now, she didn't even look at him.

The difference threw Greg off for a moment. He tried to read her expression, but she turned away, letting her long hair fall across her face.

"You should head home. I'll be working for a while."

Kathleen sounded perfectly polite, but that only made Greg more uneasy.

He hadn't made it to the alumni get-together that day because something had come up. He didn't hear about what Rita had said until later.

But Rita had been drunk. She had just been talking nonsense.

"Kathleen, it's not the way Rita made it sound. She was drunk and didn't know what she was saying. There's nothing between us anymore. I'm only helping her because she's completely broke."

"You didn't do anything wrong. We all went to school together, after all. And now that you're a successful businessman, I guess it looks good to be generous. I'd help her too if I were you."

"I saw on Rita's social media that it's her birthday today. Aren't you going to celebrate with her?"

Greg frowned. "Kathleen, are you mad at me? I came here to see you because I wanted us to go home together!"

Kathleen kept working at her desk, making adjustments to the sketch in front of her.

"She only gets one birthday a year. You'll regret it if you miss her party."

Greg's voice sharpened with irritation. "But we haven't even had dinner together or sat down and talked at home in days, Kathleen!"

He had barely finished speaking when his phone rang.

Rita Elway sounded close to tears on the other end. "Greg, I accidentally dropped my birthday cake. Could you pick up another one on your way over? My birthday just won't feel complete without it."

Greg narrowed his eyes in irritation, but he was already turning toward the door.

At the door, he stopped.

He caught Kathleen's reflection in the glass. She was still working, her movements as steady as ever. She didn't look upset at all. It was almost as if she truly didn't care.

"Kathleen, wait for me when you get home, okay? And have something ready to help me sober up. They're definitely going to keep the drinks coming tonight.

"I also bought you an antique bronze figurine at auction. They say it brings good luck to couples trying for a baby. We'll have a baby someday."

Kathleen didn't get a chance to answer before Greg closed the door behind him and left.

In the corner of the studio, Kathleen's assistant watched him go, her eyes red.

"How can Mr. Gilliam do this to you? He knows you got hurt protecting him, and now you may never be able to have children. How can he go celebrate another woman's birthday and say something like that to you?"

"It's okay," Kathleen said softly.

The pages on her desk told a different story. They were covered in tear stains, the ink bleeding into a blur.

Numbly, Kathleen finished editing the last line of the email on her phone and hit send.

A reply came soon after.

"I'd be thrilled to have you join my design studio overseas. I've been waiting a long time for you to join me."

Kathleen smiled again.

In seven days, she would walk away from this place and leave Greg and Rita to each other.

At last, Kathleen was standing right in front of Greg.He had missed her for more nights than he could count. All those nights of longing hit him at once, and tears streamed down his face.Kathleen had been worried about him. But seeing him now, that worry faded into a quiet sadness. She knew they could never go back to the way they had once been.Maybe worrying about him had simply become a habit. Or maybe it came from whatever connection they had once had.Kathleen remained calm as she read the doctor's report. Greg watched her intently as she sent the results to Brian and asked him to pass them along to the Gilliams.Only then did she look at Greg again."Do you know about your condition?"Greg nodded. While drifting in and out of consciousness, he had heard enough of the doctor talking to Randy to know that his condition was serious. What upset him most was knowing he might not have much more time with Kathleen. There was still so much he wanted to tell her."Kat, I'm sor

Looking back, her parting words felt almost like a curse. From then on, it seemed the Gilliam family would know no peace.Greg spent days waiting outside Kathleen's place, but she never came back. Just when he was beginning to lose all hope, he saw her on the local news and learned that she had won an award. In the past, Kathleen would have shared a moment like that with him. Kathleen was already fast asleep in the back seat, her head resting on Randy's shoulder as the driver took them home.Almost no one knew that Randy had grown up with Kathleen and Greg. He had gone overseas for high school, and after that, he and the other two had gone their separate ways. The bad blood between Randy and Greg went back years. It had started with the business rivalry between their families. Later, when Randy returned home to run the company, Greg looked down on him.Greg saw Randy as nothing more than a playboy. Randy, meanwhile, thought Greg was nothing special and completely wrong for Kathleen. The two spent the next six or seven years going head-to-head, both openly and behind the scenes.Randy had wanted to be with Kathleen after she and Greg divorced the first time. But before he ever got the chance to tell her how he felt, Greg had already won her back.Randy hadn't taken it well. After that, he stopped paying attention to their relationship and tried to mov

Greg had already suspected Kathleen was behind the leak. What he hadn't expected was for her to hand everything over to Randy. She really must have hated him. After years of competing with Randy, this was the first time Greg had ever swallowed his pride and called him. If Kathleen had chosen to work with Randy, there was a chance he knew where she was.Randy sounded almost pleased, as if he'd been waiting for Greg to call."So, you finally got things settled with your other woman? Or did it really take you this long to figure out I was behind the leak?"Greg clenched his fist. "Tell me where Kathleen is. I'm willing to make a deal."Randy hadn't planned on telling him, but Greg had finally swallowed his pride enough to ask. He would just have to apologize to Kathleen later. After all, Randy had only teamed up with Kathleen because he wanted to bring down Gilliam Group, and now Greg was offering him a deal.Randy chuckled. "Well, in that case, I suppose I can tell you. Kathleen

Edward was silent for a long time on the other end of the line.Of course he knew where Kathleen was. But Greg had betrayed her, and she didn't want to see him. Edward couldn't force her, so he sidestepped the question."I don't know where Kathleen is either. But the story about you and that woman from the bar is all over the news, and it's hurting your family's company too. You should deal with that first.""Okay," Greg said, his voice catching.A moment later, Edward hung up.After everything that had happened with Rita, the Whelans clearly didn't want much to do with Greg anymore.Greg couldn't help regretting that he had gotten involved with Rita on impulse. But there was no point dwelling on it now.He left Whelan Manor and started looking for another way to find Kathleen. He reached out to every friend and business associate who had been in touch with her, asking each of them if they knew anything. They all claimed to know nothing about Kathleen, their voices edged with

  • A Life Beyond Us   Chapter 12

Greg went silent, taking a long moment to process what Rita had blurted out.She had a point. Other than Gilliam Group's business rivals, Kathleen was the only person who might have had access to those photos and a reason to leak them. Why had it taken him this long to realize that?A pang of regret hit him.Greg had no attention to spare for Rita. He threw on his jacket and headed out of Gilliam Mansion.Rita called after him. "Where are you going?"Greg didn't answer. He didn't even look back.Rita sank to the floor and sobbed weakly. If she could do it all over again, she would never fall for Greg again.Once Greg left, Vincent and Michelle acted quickly. They had a lawyer draw up an agreement almost immediately, while Andrew watched as Emily packed up all of Rita's belongings."We'll give you a house in the suburbs, plus five million dollars. That's more than generous. But if you ever come back and interfere with Terry, Greg, or Kathleen's lives, I won't let you get away
